Camping near Bon Secour, Alabama
Bon Secour sits on Alabama's Baldwin County coast, between the fishing village of Bon Secour on the mainland and the Fort Morgan Peninsula that runs west from Gulf Shores. The area serves as a quieter base for exploring the Alabama Gulf Coast, with Gulf Shores beaches, Orange Beach, and the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge all within a short drive.
RV travelers typically stay in privately run parks scattered between Gulf Shores, Foley, and the Fort Morgan Peninsula. Options near the area include Gulf Coast RV Park, Gulf Shores RV Resort, Lazy Lake RV Park, Gulf Breeze RV Resort, and Blue Heron Escape RV Resort. Most offer full hookups, paved or concrete pads, laundry, and pools.
The closest large public campground is at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, which anchors the region with a traditional campground of 496 improved sites plus a newer RV Resort with 104 full-hookup sites. The Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge itself does not permit camping, so overnight stays happen at nearby private parks or the state park.
Things to do near Bon Secour
The Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is the anchor attraction. Four refuge trails span roughly six miles total and cross dunes, swales, wetlands, maritime forest, and scrub habitats. A canoe and kayak launch at the Jeff Friend Trail provides access to Little Lagoon. Bicycles are not allowed on refuge trails, which are open sunrise to sunset.
Beaches on the Fort Morgan Peninsula and in Gulf Shores are the other main draw, along with pier and charter fishing on Bon Secour Bay and the Gulf. Families can add Waterville USA, The Wharf in Orange Beach, and the Fort Morgan historic site at the western tip of the peninsula.
More than 370 bird species have been documented on the refuge, and it serves as a key stopover for neotropical migratory songbirds, making spring and fall especially strong for birding.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Both offer more comfortable temperatures and lower rainfall than summer, with April to May and September to October generally the best weather windows. Spring and fall also bring the peak of neotropical songbird migration through the refuge.
Summer is the busiest tourist season, with hot, humid days and the highest rainfall of the year. August is the wettest month, with roughly 198 mm of precipitation spread across about 18 rainy days. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in late summer. Campers should watch NHC advisories when booking in August and September.
Winter is mild and quieter. January is the coolest month, with average highs near 15°C and lows near 10°C, and many Fort Morgan and Gulf Shores parks stay open year-round, drawing snowbirds on monthly stays. Some private parks offer discounted long-term winter rates and fill months ahead.

Jeff was really easy to work with. As a first time renter on this app he walked me through all the steps and accessories needed to house my family that traveled from Utah.

How to book a campsite
Private parks near Bon Secour, including Gulf Coast RV Park, Gulf Shores RV Resort, Lazy Lake RV Park, Gulf Breeze RV Resort, and Blue Heron Escape RV Resort, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is reasonable for spring and fall; peak summer weekends and spring break often require several months of lead time.
For Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, reservations go through the Alabama State Parks system at reserve.alapark.com. Out-of-state guests can book up to 12 months in advance, and Alabama residents up to 13 months, with a 3-night minimum on special event and holiday weekends and a 2-night minimum on standard weekends. Monthly reservations at Gulf State Park cover November through March and are handled through a separate booking request process, not the standard online calendar.
What to expect on-site
Private parks in the Bon Secour and Fort Morgan area generally provide full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, water, paved or concrete pads, Wi-Fi, laundry, and a pool or clubhouse. Sites near Bon Secour Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway tend to be smaller and quieter, while resort-style parks closer to Gulf Shores offer more amenities and family activities.
Expect humid, buggy conditions from late spring through early fall; bring insect repellent and screen rooms. Coastal salt air is hard on rigs, so rinse exteriors after windy days. Cell coverage is generally strong across the peninsula.
Refuge trails are open sunrise to sunset only. Sea turtle nesting season runs roughly May through October, and beach lighting restrictions apply during that window.

The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels, regardless of size. You'll need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy, and you'll confirm your ID through the platform during checkout, which usually takes only a few minutes. Visiting from abroad? help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my Bon Secour trip plans change? Can I cancel?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have time to firm up your plans without pressure. Whether life throws a curveball or a Gulf Coast tropical system pops up close to your trip dates, refunds are determined by how far out you cancel and the policy tier on your booking. Cancellation terms are set by RVezy, not the host, which keeps things fair and consistent. Pro tip: lock in your favorite Bon Secour RV early to score the best Gulf-front campsite, then relax knowing you've got flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Bon Secour RV trip?
Absolutely, and the Gulf Coast is a dream for dog owners. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Bon Secour, and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you arrive, your pup can join you on the leashed sections of Gulf State Park's paved Backcountry Trail, romp at the off-leash Orange Beach Dog Park about 20 minutes east, or stroll the dog-friendly beach areas of Fort Morgan (note: Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge beaches do not allow pets to protect nesting sea turtles and the Alabama beach mouse). Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and bring a beach towel, the sugar-white sand sticks to wet fur.
alapark.com/parks/gulf-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Bon Secour?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to enjoy Bon Secour, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts on the Fort Morgan Peninsula offer RV delivery in Bon Secour straight to popular spots like Gulf State Park Campground, Bay Breeze RV Park, or even a private rental driveway in Gulf Shores. The host tows or drives the RV in, levels it, hooks up water, power, and sewer, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. You skip towing stress, traffic on Highway 180, and setup headaches. Just turn on the Delivery filter when you search, and message the host to confirm the delivery fee and any mileage included.
alapark.com/parks/gulf-state-park-campgroundHow far can I travel on a Bon Secour RV trip, and how does mileage work?

Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and many Bon Secour and Gulf Shores hosts offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for road-tripping the coast. From Bon Secour you can reach Pensacola Beach in about 45 minutes, Mobile in roughly 1 hour, Destin in about 1.5 hours, New Orleans in around 3.5 hours, and Panama City Beach in about 3 hours. Each listing clearly displays the included miles per night and any overage rate, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Gulf Coast RV road trip from Bon Secour, message the host before booking to negotiate a custom mileage package.

alapark.com/parks/gulf-state-park-campgroundWhen is the best time to visit Bon Secour in an RV?
Bon Secour is genuinely a year-round destination thanks to its mild Gulf Coast climate. The sweet spot is April through early June, when daytime highs sit around 75 to 85 F, humidity is manageable, and sea turtle nesting season kicks off on the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge beaches. October and November are equally fantastic, with highs in the 70s, fewer crowds, and excellent fall bird migration through the refuge. July and August are hot and humid (highs near 90 F with afternoon thunderstorms), while winter stays mild with highs in the low 60s, perfect for snowbirds escaping the north. Pro tip: book your Bon Secour RV trip for late October to catch the National Shrimp Festival in nearby Gulf Shores.
weather.gov/mob/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Bon Secour?
You'll do great, Bon Secour is one of the friendliest places for a first time renting an RV. The roads on the Fort Morgan Peninsula are flat, straight, and lightly trafficked, especially Highway 180, so there's no mountain driving or tight switchbacks to worry about. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to use the propane, slide-outs, awning, water systems, and dump valves. You can also message your host anytime with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking. Pro tip: choose a Class B campervan or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they handle just like an SUV and park easily at Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge trailheads.
fhwa.dot.gov/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my Bon Secour trip?
Help is one call away: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so you're never stuck. If you get a flat on Fort Morgan Road, run out of fuel on the way to Dauphin Island, lock yourself out at Gulf State Park Campground, or have a battery issue at a beachside pull-off, a quick call connects you to dispatch and a local service provider. For mechanical or appliance hiccups, you can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, since they know their RV best. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Bon Secour RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes to interstate travel, no to Mexico. Most Bon Secour, Alabama RV hosts welcome trips into neighboring Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and beyond, which makes a Gulf Coast RV road trip from Bon Secour easy to plan. Popular cross-state routes include Bon Secour to Pensacola Beach (45 minutes), to New Orleans's French Quarter (3.5 hours), and up to the Great Smoky Mountains (about 9 hours). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection coverage don't extend there. Canada-bound trips may be possible with host approval, just message before booking. Pro tip: the drive east along US-98 to 30A in Florida is one of the prettiest beach routes in the country.
cbp.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Budget smart and you'll be pleasantly surprised. A Class B campervan rental in Bon Secour averages 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome gets 8 to 12 MPG, a Class A coach lands around 6 to 10 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 14 MPG. Alabama gas prices generally sit below the national average, hovering around $2.85 to $3.20 per gallon, and you'll find plenty of stations along Highway 59 in Foley and Gulf Shores before you head out to the peninsula. Pro tip: top off at the Tom Thumb or Circle K in Gulf Shores before driving west on Highway 180, fuel options thin out fast past the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bon Secour?
Earlier is better, but you've got options. Gulf State Park Campground, the most popular RV park near Bon Secour, opens reservations up to 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime spring and summer weekends sell out within hours. For Fort Morgan RV Park and Bay Breeze RV Park, aim for 3 to 6 months out for peak season (March to August) and 2 to 4 weeks for shoulder season. Private parks like Anchors Aweigh in Foley often have last-minute openings even in summer. Pro tip: if Gulf State Park is fully booked, check daily around 7 a.m. Central, cancellations release sites back into inventory and you can grab one within minutes.
alapark.com/parks/gulf-state-park-campgroundWhat are driving conditions like around Bon Secour?
They're as easy as RV driving gets. The Fort Morgan Peninsula is dead flat, and Highway 180 (Fort Morgan Road) is a wide, two-lane road with low traffic and clear sightlines, even in a 30-foot motorhome. Watch for occasional sandy shoulders, the 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. school traffic in Gulf Shores along Highway 59, and summer afternoon thunderstorms that can drop heavy rain in 20 minutes. During hurricane season (June 1 to November 30), keep an eye on the National Weather Service Mobile office for any tropical activity. Pro tip: if you're nervous about backing into a beachfront site, request RV delivery, your host will park and level it for you so you can focus on sunsets, not steering wheels.
weather.gov/mob/What amenities and hookups can I expect at Bon Secour area campgrounds?
You'll find excellent infrastructure for RV camping in Bon Secour. Gulf State Park Campground offers full hookups (50/30-amp electric, water, sewer) at most sites, plus a dump station, laundry, Wi-Fi, two swimming pools, and a camp store. Fort Morgan RV Park and Bay Breeze RV Park both offer full hookups and free Wi-Fi. For water fills and dump stations on the road, Gulf State Park has a public dump station near the entrance, and Anchors Aweigh in Foley offers day-use dumping for a small fee. Most campgrounds also have potable water spigots near the entrance. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, a few older Fort Morgan sites have variable pressure.
alapark.com/parks/gulf-state-park-campgroundWhat's included inside a typical Bon Secour RV rental?
More than you'd think. A typical motorhome rental in Bon Secour comes fully equipped: a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 depending on the unit), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and oven, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, roof and dash air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted travel seats. Most units include a flat-screen TV, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, generators, and even bikes or beach chairs at no charge. Linens, kitchenware, and basic cleaning supplies are commonly included, just check the listing's amenity list. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6+' if you're bringing the whole family, and message the host to confirm beach gear is on board.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options do Bon Secour hosts offer?
Hosts here go above and beyond. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Bon Secour include beach chairs and umbrellas, kayaks and paddleboards, bikes, generators, propane refills, linen and towel packages, outdoor grills, and pet-cleaning fees, typically $10 to $50 each. For pickup, you can collect the RV at the host's location, often in Gulf Shores, Foley, or Orange Beach, or pay for delivery directly to Gulf State Park, Fort Morgan RV Park, or your vacation rental. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others offer unlimited miles for stationary or delivery-only bookings. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator add-on if you're heading to a non-hookup beach site, you'll be fully self-sufficient.
alabama.travel/places-to-go/gulf-shoresHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Bon Secour, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, no cash handoffs with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts (amount varies by RV) and is released after the trip once the host confirms no damage and all rules were followed. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough with the host at pickup, take time-stamped photos of any existing scuffs, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement. Pro tip: empty the black and gray tanks at Gulf State Park's dump station before drop-off to avoid extra fees.
