Campgrounds and RV parks near Greensboro, AL

The Safe House Black History Museum in Greensboro preserves the shotgun house where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. sought refuge from the Ku Klux Klan on the night of March 21, 1968, two weeks before his assassination in Memphis. Displayed at the museum are many unpublished photos of the civil rights struggle in the Black Belt, including photos of the Greensboro marches, Bloody Sunday in Selma, and the march from Selma to Montgomery. At Moundville Archaeological Park Univ of Alabama, visitors can walk among Mississippian-period earthen mounds and tour the on-site museum, which hosts Native American cultural events through the year. Amenities at Chickasaw State Park include clean restrooms, a playground, a wading pool, picnic facilities, and easy access to hunting areas. It is part of Alabama's Black Belt Birding Trail. Auburn University's Rural Studio, based nearby in Newbern, is another common stop.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping around Greensboro. Daytime highs are moderate, humidity is lower than in summer, and wildflowers and songbird migration draw birders to the Black Belt. April is the wettest month in Greensboro, when the rain falls for about 12 days and typically aggregates over 4 inches of precipitation, so thunderstorms are common and travelers should check severe-weather alerts. Summer is hot and oppressive, with July highs averaging near 92 F and lows near 72 F. Sites with shade fill first, and hookup power for air conditioning is close to essential. Late summer and early fall carry residual tropical-storm risk from the Gulf; watch National Hurricane Center advisories when planning trips in August and September. Winters are short and mild but wet. Starting December 1, the Moundville bathhouse closes for the winter and reopens March 1, and during that period only RVs with bathrooms and showers are permitted to stay, with no tent camping allowed. Chickasaw and most private parks in the area remain open year-round, though some services may run reduced hours.

Expect small, quiet parks rather than resort amenities. Moundville offers a mix of full-hookup and water-and-electric sites plus a renovated bathhouse and a dump station; the bathhouse is closed from December 1 through March 1 each year. Chickasaw State Park features three RV campsites, each with water and 30-amp electrical connections, primitive camping with water and electricity, and restrooms with no shower facilities, so plan accordingly for larger rigs. Cell coverage is inconsistent across rural Hale and Marengo counties. Download maps and reservation details before arrival. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, songbirds, and snakes, and campers should store food securely and keep pets leashed. Sites are generally shaded by mature pine and hardwood, but bring insect repellent, especially in warm months.
