Campgrounds near Klawock, Alaska
Klawock sits on the west coast of Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska, roughly seven miles from the town of Craig and about 26 miles from the Hollis ferry terminal. Prince of Wales is the fourth-largest island in the United States, with hundreds of miles of coastline and a road network that reaches remote coves, salmon streams, and old-growth forest. The village itself is known for its totem park, one of the larger accessible collections in Southeast Alaska.
RV options in the immediate area are limited, so most travelers base themselves at Log Cabin RV Park and Resort, a full-hookup park on Big Salt Lake Road with roughly 20 sites, pull-through spots, laundry, hot showers, and a dock and boat launch on the saltwater bay. It operates seasonally from April 1 to September 30 and is set among original-growth spruce and hemlock, a short drive from Craig for groceries and fuel.
Because the island is reached by ferry or floatplane from Ketchikan, trip planning here is different from a mainland Alaska drive. Rigs ride the Alaska Marine Highway to Hollis, then follow paved and gravel roads west to Klawock.
Things to do near Klawock
Fishing is the main draw. Saltwater charters out of Craig target king salmon starting in May, coho peaking in late summer, plus halibut, ling cod, and rockfish through the season. Freshwater anglers work streams and lakes for cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, pink salmon, and steelhead runs in spring and fall.
Klawock Totem Park displays 21 poles carved with Tlingit clan crests and stories, set on a hill above the harbor. The village also has a working salmon hatchery open to visitors.
Beyond town, day trips reach El Capitan Cave, one of the largest known limestone caves in Alaska, plus Haida totem sites in Hydaburg and Kasaan. Kayakers, cyclists, and hikers use the island's logging roads and coastline to access bays, beaches, and wildlife viewing for black bears, bald eagles, and, offshore, whales and sea lions.

The camping season on Prince of Wales Island runs roughly April through September, matching when Log Cabin RV Park and Resort is open. Late spring and early summer bring the longest daylight and the first king salmon runs, and this is when charter boats fill up fastest. July and August are the warmest months but still see steady rainfall as summer moves toward fall.
September still fishes well for coho and produces vivid fall color, though weather turns wetter and windier. October is typically among the wettest months of the year in Klawock, and by late fall most RV facilities have closed for the season.
Winter is long, cool, and overcast rather than deeply cold, tempered by the maritime climate. Snow does fall between November and April, but accumulation is limited compared to interior Alaska. Steelhead run into island streams from late fall through spring for anglers willing to travel off-season.
How to book an RV trip to Klawock
Reserve the RV first, then the ferry, then the campground. The Alaska Marine Highway runs the Ketchikan to Hollis route, and vehicle space is limited, especially for larger rigs. Book sailings well in advance through the state ferry website and confirm length and height restrictions for the vessel serving the route.
Log Cabin RV Park and Resort takes direct reservations through its own website and phone line for its full-hookup sites and cabins during its April 1 to September 30 operating window. Sites are limited to around 20, so lock in dates before finalizing ferry bookings if a specific week is required.
Charter fishing, cave tours at El Capitan, and floatplane transfers should be booked separately with local operators. Popular guides for king and coho seasons can sell out months ahead, so contact them once travel dates are set.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rain. Klawock averages roughly 93 inches of precipitation per year, and even peak summer weeks include wet days. Pack layered rain gear, waterproof footwear, and traction for muddy trails and boat decks.
Services are concentrated in Klawock and Craig, which have grocery stores, fuel, laundry, and small restaurants. Beyond those towns, expect long stretches of gravel logging road with limited or no cell coverage, so carry a paper map, spare fuel, and a full water supply. Cell service does reach the Log Cabin RV Park area.
This is bear country. Black bears are common along salmon streams. Store food securely, keep a clean site, carry bear spray on trails, and make noise when hiking. Wildlife viewing is a highlight, but distance matters for both bears and marine mammals near shore.
