Campgrounds and RV parks near Sitka, AK

Sitka sits on the outer coast of Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage. No roads connect the city to the mainland; Sitka can be reached only by air or sea, which shapes every camping trip here. RV renters typically arrive on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry at the terminal on Halibut Point Road, roughly seven miles north of downtown, and base themselves at one of two small in-town RV parks. Sealing Cove RV Parking is operated by the City and Borough of Sitka, adjacent to Sealing Cove Boat Harbor, a short distance from downtown Sitka on Japonski Island. It has space for 26 RVs with water and electrical hook-ups, and is open May 1 to October 1. Sitka Sportsmans Association RV Park sits adjacent to the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry terminal at 5211 Halibut Point Road, with space for 16 RVs plus tent sites, water and electrical hookups, showers and restrooms, and is open year round. Beyond these two, most camping in the area is inside the surrounding Tongass National Forest, which limits capacity and makes early planning essential.

Booking rules differ by operator. For Sealing Cove RV Parking, no advance reservations are accepted; sites are first-come, first-served through the on-site host, with the Sitka Harbor Master's office as the contact point. Arrive earlier in the day during summer, since capacity is small. Sitka Sportsmans Association RV Park takes reservations through its website. The park recommends making a reservation prior to arrival, and no refunds are issued for cancellations less than 60 days prior to arrival or for no-shows, so lock in dates once ferry travel is confirmed. For U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in the surrounding Tongass National Forest, bookings go through Recreation.gov. Campground reservations typically open several months in advance, and for peak season visits it pays to book as early as possible.
