Campgrounds near Somerton, Arizona
Somerton sits in the Yuma Valley of southwestern Arizona, a few miles south of Yuma and close to the Colorado River, the California border, and the Cocopah Indian Reservation. The surrounding low-desert farmland and mild winters draw a heavy snowbird crowd from November through March, and most nearby campgrounds are full-hookup RV resorts built around that season.
Options in the immediate area lean toward long-stay parks with paved or graveled sites, laundry, pools, and clubhouses. Mesa Verde RV Resort is an age-qualified 55-plus resort, and Desert Holiday RV Resort follows a similar Yuma-area format. Capri RV Resort, OG RV Resort, and Glenaire MH and RV Park offer smaller in-town settings with easy access to Somerton and Yuma services.
Beyond private resorts, public land camping is within reach: the Imperial Dam Long Term Visitor Area, created in 1983 to serve winter visitors, covers roughly 3,500 acres of flat desert on Bureau of Land Management land north of Yuma, and Mittry Lake is a common overflow destination for RV travelers who want lower-cost or longer stays.
Things to do near Somerton
The Colorado River corridor is the main outdoor draw. Mittry Lake and Martinez Lake, north of Yuma, offer fishing, kayaking, and birding, and Imperial National Wildlife Refuge protects a long stretch of river habitat with viewing platforms and short trails. West of Somerton, the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is a major off-highway vehicle destination.
In town and nearby Yuma, Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park and the Colorado River State Historic Park cover the region's frontier and steamboat history. Cocopah Casino and the Cocopah Museum sit on the reservation just south of Somerton.
Day trips reach Los Algodones, Mexico, a short drive across the border, and Castle Dome Mines Museum and ghost town north of Yuma.

Peak season in the Somerton and Yuma area runs from about November through March, when daytime highs are typically in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit and overnight lows rarely drop to freezing. Snowbird resorts fill for the season, and monthly and seasonal reservations are often locked in months, sometimes a year, in advance. Short-stay nightly sites are the hardest to find in January and February.
Spring, roughly March into May, is a strong shoulder season with warm, dry days and easier availability. Wildflowers can appear on desert lands after wet winters, and river recreation ramps up as water temperatures rise.
Summer is extreme. Yuma sees highs of at least 100 degrees on most days from June to September, with brief monsoon thunderstorms possible in July and August. Many resorts stay open with reduced occupancy, but sun protection, working air conditioning, and awareness of heat advisories from the National Weather Service are essential. Fall cools quickly through October and November as snowbird traffic returns.

How to book
Private resorts near Somerton, including Mesa Verde RV Resort, Desert Holiday RV Resort, Capri RV Resort, OG RV Resort, and Glenaire MH and RV Park, typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Many also list nightly and weekly inventory on aggregators such as Campspot, RoverPass, or Good Sam. For winter stays, book as early as summer for the following season.
Public land options use different systems. The Imperial Dam LTVA long-term permit allows use of BLM designated LTVAs continuously from September 15th to April 15th, and permits are sold on site at the Yuma Field Office or through Recreation.gov. Arizona State Parks such as Cattail Cove and Buckskin Mountain, farther north on the Colorado River, use the Arizona State Parks reservation portal.
Check age restrictions before booking: several Yuma-area resorts are 55-plus communities and do not accept families with children for long stays.
What to expect on the ground
Most RV parks in the Somerton and Yuma area are flat, paved or graveled, with pull-through and back-in full-hookup sites, 30 and 50 amp service, and shared amenities such as pools, laundry, and clubhouses. Sites tend to be closer together than at public campgrounds, and the vibe skews toward long-term winter residents rather than short-hop tourists.
Cell coverage is generally strong across Somerton, Yuma, and the main highway corridors. Grocery, fuel, propane, RV service, and medical facilities are readily available in Yuma. Cross-border pharmacies and dental services in Los Algodones are a common reason travelers pick this area.
Expect dust, low humidity, and intense sun. Bring shade, tire covers for long stays, and a plan for water conservation, since the region is arid year round.

Arizona does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every RV on the RVezy platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and we'll verify your ID through the booking process so everything is squared away before pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Delivery is especially popular for spots like Mittry Lake, Imperial Dam Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA), and the foothills RV parks east of Yuma. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your destination address. Pro tip: ask about a stationary delivery package, you skip the driving entirely and just enjoy the trip.

For boondockers, the Imperial Dam LTVA offers affordable long-term Bureau of Land Management (BLM) camping. Pro tip: book at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead from November through March, when snowbirds fill nearly every full-hookup site in the Yuma area.

Winter is peak snowbird season, so book early. Pro tip: February and March are magical, wildflowers bloom across the Sonoran Desert, citrus harvest is in full swing, and the Yuma Lettuce Days festival typically lands in late winter or early spring.

Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan if you're nervous about size. Pro tip: practice a few turns in a large empty parking lot before heading to camp so you get comfortable with the turning radius.

Pro tip: cell service can get spotty in remote desert areas north of Yuma, so download offline maps and screenshot the roadside assistance number before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Somerton?
An RV road trip from Somerton drops you in the heart of the Southwest, with epic options in every direction. Popular routes include San Diego and the Pacific beaches (about 180 miles west via Interstate 8), Joshua Tree National Park (170 miles north), Phoenix and Sedona (190 to 300 miles northeast), Salton Sea and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (90 to 140 miles northwest), and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (about 180 miles east). Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, so plan loops that stay stateside. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Somerton RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable costs on your Somerton RV adventure. Gas prices in the Yuma area typically track close to the Arizona state average and run noticeably below California prices. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs hover around 6 to 9 MPG. For a 500-mile round trip in a Class C, budget roughly $175 to $275 in fuel depending on current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Somerton or Yuma before crossing into California on Interstate 8, California gas is often $1 or more per gallon higher, an easy way to save on every fill-up.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Somerton?
For peak snowbird season (December through March), book full-hookup campgrounds in the Yuma area 2 to 4 months in advance, many longtime visitors reserve the same site a year out. Outside peak season, 2 to 3 weeks is usually plenty. State parks like Picacho Peak (about 160 miles east) use the Arizona State Parks reservation system, federal sites like Imperial Dam LTVA use Recreation.gov, and most private RV resorts in Yuma have their own booking pages. Pro tip: if you can't get a full-hookup site, look at Mittry Lake Wildlife Area or BLM dispersed camping near the Colorado River, they're often available last-minute and cost a fraction of resort pricing.
recreation.gov/What should I know about driving conditions around Somerton?
Driving conditions around Somerton are about as RV-friendly as it gets, flat terrain, straight highways, and clear desert visibility most of the year. Interstate 8 and US Highway 95 are the main RV arteries, both wide and well-graded. Watch for blowing dust during spring wind events (April and May) and sudden monsoon thunderstorms in July and August, which can flood washes within minutes, never drive into a flooded dip. Summer afternoon heat can also stress tires, so check pressure each morning before driving. Pro tip: avoid the agricultural roads south of town during early morning harvest hours (October through March), tractors and produce trucks make for slow going and tight squeezes.
azdot.gov/travel-informationWhere can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Somerton?
Good news, dump stations and potable water are easy to find around Somerton. Most full-hookup campgrounds (Shangri-La RV Resort, Sundance RV, Del Pueblo) include sewer and fresh water at every site. For dry campers, free or low-cost dump stations are available at the Yuma Pilot Travel Center on East 32nd Street, Love's Travel Stop in Yuma, and the Imperial Dam LTVA dump station for BLM permit holders. Most Yuma-area campgrounds have on-site potable water spigots near the entrance. Pro tip: if you're boondocking at Mittry Lake or in the desert, plan to dump and refill every 4 to 5 days, and bring a 5-gallon jug for top-ups so you're not packing up camp just for water.

Most motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy include a queen or king bed, fold-out dinette or bunks, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, an interior bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential here), forced-air furnace, and a generator or solar for off-grid power. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and some hosts offer mobile Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Seatbelts in motorhomes typically match the sleeps count for safe family travel. Pro tip: when filtering for a campervan rental in Somerton or larger motorhome rental in Somerton, prioritize listings that mention dual-pane windows and 13,500+ BTU air conditioning, you'll thank yourself in the heat.
energy.gov/energysaver/central-air-conditioningWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my Somerton RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Somerton offer plenty of ways to customize a family RV trip in Somerton. Common add-ons include camp chairs and tables, bedding and kitchen kits, generators or extra propane, bike racks, kayak or SUP carriers, portable Wi-Fi, and pet packages. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup, or convenient pickup at their Yuma-area location. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overages around $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Pro tip: bundle add-ons with the same host rather than buying gear separately, you'll usually get a better total price and avoid hauling supplies through Yuma International Airport (about 12 miles north of Somerton).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106534-Understanding-mileage-on-your-bookingHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Somerton RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy when you book (not the host directly), which protects both sides of the transaction. Your card is charged for the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons up front, with the security deposit pre-authorized closer to your trip start date. Deposit amounts typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class and chosen protection level. The hold is released after the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, generator hours, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off, this is the easiest way to avoid any deposit dispute and keep your Somerton RV trip ending on a high note.
