Campgrounds and RV parks near Midway, AR

Fishing drives most trips. The White River below Bull Shoals Dam is renowned as one of mid-America's premier trout streams, with rainbow and brown trout that draw anglers year-round. Bull Shoals Lake itself holds bass, catfish, crappie, and bream, and hosts fishing tournaments across the seasons. Marinas around the lake rent boats, kayaks, and canoes, and guide services operate out of resorts along the tailwater below the dam. On land, Bull Shoals-White River State Park offers several hiking trails and multi-use paths, plus a 1.5-mile nature trail that starts in the Lakeview Park campground on the lake side. The James A. Gaston Visitor Center sits high above the dam and features interpretive exhibits, a theater, and an observation deck covering the dam, river, and area wildlife. Winter wildlife viewing is a draw of its own. Roughly 100 bald eagles visit the Bull Shoals area each winter, and the state park hosts eagle-watching programs and boat tours.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping. Daytime highs are mild, humidity is manageable, and the trout river runs cold year-round, so fishing does not depend on warm weather. Spring brings the heaviest rain of the year, with May the wettest month, and occasional severe thunderstorms can push river levels up quickly when the dam is generating. Travelers should watch forecasts and pick sites on higher ground during high-water periods. Summer is the peak booking window for families, with lake swimming, boating, and long daylight hours. Heat and humidity are significant, with July highs near 91°F, and holiday weekends fill lakeside sites weeks in advance. At Bull Shoals-White River State Park, bathhouses generally operate March through November, and the marina keeps daily summer hours before scaling back in the shoulder months. Winter is quiet but not closed. The campground stays open year-round, though bathhouses and some services scale back from December through February. Eagle viewing peaks December through February, and cold nights near or below freezing are common.

Terrain is rolling Ozark hardwood forest with rocky bluffs above the lake and river. Sites at private resorts along the White River tend to be closer together and oriented toward boat launches and fish-cleaning stations. Public sites at Bull Shoals-White River State Park sit on concrete pads along the river in a diagonal layout, while Lakeview Park's Corps of Engineers sites are spread out on a bluff above the lake under mature trees. Hookups vary. Full-hookup sites exist but are limited and book first; many public sites offer electric and water only, with a central dump station. Firewood should be purchased locally to prevent the spread of invasive pests. River conditions change quickly when the dam generates, so watch posted schedules before wading or launching small boats. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Midway and Mountain Home but drops in coves and along river roads.
