Camping in Arkansas
Arkansas markets itself as The Natural State, and the camping inventory backs that up. The state has hundreds of public camping areas scattered across state parks, Corps of Engineers parks, national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, wildlife management areas and municipal parks. Arkansas State Parks include a wide range of campsites, from primitive tent areas to full-service RV pads with water, electric and sewer hookups.
The terrain ranges from the Ozark and Ouachita mountains in the west and north to the Mississippi Delta lowlands in the east, with major reservoirs and rivers in between. RV travelers cluster around a handful of high-demand state parks: Petit Jean State Park on its namesake mountain, Devil's Den State Park in the Lee Creek Valley, DeGray Lake Resort State Park near Hot Springs, Lake Catherine State Park in the Ouachita foothills, and Bull Shoals-White River State Park in the north.
These parks function well as a road-trip backbone. Most have paved or gravel pads, electric and water at a minimum, dump stations on site, and trailheads or boat ramps within walking distance. Private RV resorts fill the gaps near Hot Springs, Bentonville, Eureka Springs, and the interstates.
Things to do in Arkansas
Water dominates the activity list. Arkansas has thousands of lakes plus the Buffalo, White, Ouachita, and Little Missouri rivers, which means fishing, paddling, and swimming are within reach of most campgrounds. Anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish across the major reservoirs, and Bull Shoals-White River State Park is a recognized trout-fishing base on the tailwater below Bull Shoals Dam.
Hiking and overlooks anchor the mountain parks. Petit Jean State Park has Cedar Falls and a network of CCC-era trails, including the path to a 95-foot waterfall, while Devil's Den State Park draws hikers to its sandstone crevices and the Butterfield Trail. Hot Springs National Park lets visitors take the waters in historic bathhouses along Bathhouse Row.
Families often pair a stay at DeGray Lake Resort State Park or Lake Catherine State Park with swim beaches, marina rentals, and ranger-led interpretive programs.

Spring and fall are the prime RV seasons in Arkansas. From late March through May, daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable range, dogwoods and redbuds bloom across the Ozarks, and waterfalls run full at parks like Petit Jean and Devil's Den. The trade-off is rain: spring is the wettest stretch of the year, and thunderstorms can be intense. Little Rock experiences a prolonged spring wet season, with heavy rainfall possible from March through May.
Summer is hot and humid. Little Rock has a humid subtropical climate with hot, often muggy summers, and afternoons can turn extremely hot. Lakeside parks like DeGray Lake Resort State Park and Lake Catherine State Park stay busy because the water provides relief, but inland mountain campgrounds can feel oppressive in mid-afternoon. School-break weekends fill quickly.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong color in the hardwoods, particularly on Mount Magazine, Petit Jean, and along the Buffalo River. Winter is mild compared to the Midwest, many campgrounds stay open, and migrating bald eagles winter on Arkansas lakes and rivers from roughly December through February, drawing birders to Bull Shoals-White River State Park and other lake parks.

We stayed over Memorial Day weekend with our family and had the BEST experience! We rented an RV for 3 adults and 3 kids, and it was the perfect size with plenty of room for everyone. Everything was super clean and fully stocked — pillows, bedding, and honestly anything you could possibly need was included. But our absolute favorite part was the outdoor kitchen. I genuinely don’t think we can ever rent an RV again without one now! The griddle was AMAZING and made cooking so easy and fun. We’ve officially become bougie RV campers now. 😂 Could not have asked for a better stay. Highly recommend!

How to book in Arkansas
State park campsites are reserved through the Arkansas State Parks system, online at arkansasstateparks.com or by phoning the park directly. Individual reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance of the scheduled arrival date, either online or by contacting the park visitor center. The same system handles Petit Jean, Devil's Den, DeGray Lake Resort, Lake Catherine, and Bull Shoals-White River.
Weekend stays carry minimums. Single-night reservations can be made Sunday through Thursday, weekend reservations require a minimum of two nights, and a three-night minimum applies on three-day holiday weekends. High-demand sites require three nights Thursday through Saturday, or four nights Thursday through Sunday on holiday weekends. Camping in an Arkansas state park is limited to one 14-day stay within a 30-day period.
Corps of Engineers lakefront campgrounds and national forest sites are booked through Recreation.gov. Private parks book directly through their own websites or phone lines.
What to expect in Arkansas
Most Arkansas State Park RV loops offer 30- and 50-amp electric service with water; full hookups including sewer exist at the larger parks but are not universal, so plan dump-station stops. Campgrounds include clean bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, picnic tables and fire rings at each site, and water spigots throughout the loop. Most parks are pet-friendly, and many have park stores selling firewood, ice, and basic supplies.
Site character varies by region. Petit Jean State Park and Devil's Den State Park sit at elevation with tighter, wooded loops and some grade on access roads, so big-rig drivers should check site lengths before booking. DeGray Lake Resort State Park has wider lakeside pads suited to larger trailers and fifth wheels. Bull Shoals-White River State Park and Lake Catherine State Park fall in between.
Cell service is patchy in the Ozarks and Ouachitas. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to sunrise, and uniformed rangers patrol the parks.
