Devil's Den is the main regional draw for outdoor recreation. Among the many hiking options are the Yellow Rock Trail, known for its view of Lee Creek Valley, and the 15-mile Butterfield Hiking Trail, a looped backpacking route. The park's trails also support mountain biking and horseback riding, with connections into the surrounding Ozark National Forest. An impressive rock dam spans Lee Creek forming Lake Devil, an 8-acre lake for fishing. At Lake Fort Smith, water time is the headline activity. The park's 260 acres overlook the scenic 1,400-acre Lake Fort Smith, which visitors can explore by kayak, canoe, fishing boat, or party barge rented at the park marina. For backpackers, it is the western terminus of the 240-mile Ozark Highlands Trail, giving hikers direct access to a major long-distance trail system.

The region has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, while winters are cold. The area is fairly wet, with spring being the wettest season and occasional snowfall occurring in winter. Heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can sometimes occur during the warmer months. The wettest month is usually May, which can affect creek crossings and unpaved access roads in the Ozark National Forest. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days and cooler nights. Summer weekends fill quickly at state park campgrounds, and swim beaches and pools are busiest between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Lake Fort Smith prohibits swimming, and the pool only runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, so summer trips are the window for the on-site pool and splash pad. Winter is quiet but usable. State-park sites in this area are set up for standard RVs and travel trailers. Lake Fort Smith offers 30 sites divided into two loops: Loop A with 20 Class AAA sites featuring full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric) positioned closest to the lakeshore, and Loop B with 10 Class B sites offering water and 30-amp electric. The park offers year-round convenience with hot showers in heated bathrooms. Devil's Den offers 107 campsites (45 Class AAA, 24 Class D with no hookups, 6 bike-in tent-only, and 24 sites with hookups in the horse camp that includes a bathhouse and access to the horse trails). The maximum RV and trailer length is 55 ft. Roads into the park are narrow and winding through the Boston Mountains, so larger rigs should review the route in advance. Arkansas State Park campsites are limited to eight persons per unit.
