Campgrounds near Salem, Arkansas
Salem sits in Fulton County in the Arkansas Ozarks, roughly a dozen miles north of the Spring River and within easy reach of the South Fork of the Spring River. The town works well as a base for RV travelers who want river access, quiet rural roads, and stocked-trout fishing without the crowds of larger Ozark destinations.
RV parks in the area cluster along the two rivers and around Crown Lake. Salem averages about 149 rainfall days per year and roughly 34 inches of precipitation annually, so most private campgrounds run a full spring-through-fall season and scale back or close during the coldest months. Nearby options include Southfork Canoe Resort, Southfork Resort, Crown Lake RV Resort, Box Hound Marina Resort and RV Park, and Spring River Oak Campground.
Expect a mix of full-hookup sites, riverside pull-throughs, and marina-adjacent parking. Cell coverage is spotty in the river valleys, and grocery runs generally mean driving back into Salem or Hardy.
Things to do near Salem
The Spring River is the main draw. Fed by Mammoth Spring on the Missouri line, it runs cold year-round and supports trout, smallmouth bass, and long float trips by canoe, kayak, or raft. Southfork Canoe Resort and Southfork Resort both sit on the South Fork tributary, which is quieter and better suited to families with younger paddlers.
Crown Lake, just east of Salem, offers flat-water boating, bass fishing, and swim beaches, and Crown Lake RV Resort provides direct lake access. Box Hound Marina Resort and RV Park adds boat rentals and a marina store for lake-based trips.
Off the water, day trips reach Mammoth Spring State Park, the Ozark Folk Center, and Blanchard Springs Caverns within about an hour and a half.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the Spring River sees heavy canoe and kayak traffic and riverside sites at places like Spring River Oak Campground book well ahead. Summer highs sit in the upper 80s Fahrenheit, and the spring-fed river stays cool enough to make float trips comfortable even on hot afternoons.
Spring brings the heaviest rainfall of the year and the highest river flows. April sees rain on about 14 days and roughly 4.2 inches of precipitation, which can push the Spring River to unsafe float levels and close low-water crossings. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak from late March into May.
Fall is the quietest stretch worth planning around. September is typically the driest month, temperatures ease into the 70s, and hardwood color builds through October. Winter closes many private campgrounds or drops them to limited services.
How to book
Private campgrounds around Salem, including Southfork Canoe Resort, Southfork Resort, Crown Lake RV Resort, Box Hound Marina Resort and RV Park, and Spring River Oak Campground, are booked directly with each property by phone or through their websites. There is no central reservation portal for these parks, and holiday weekends often require a two- or three-night minimum.
For federal and state sites in the wider region, Corps of Engineers and U.S. Forest Service campgrounds use Recreation.gov, and Arkansas State Parks use the ArkansasStateParks.com reservation system.
Book summer weekends and any float-trip package six to eight weeks out. Shoulder-season midweek stays are usually available on shorter notice.
What to expect on site
Sites near the rivers are typically gravel or grass with 30- and 50-amp hookups, water, and sewer or dump-station access. Larger Class A rigs should call ahead to confirm pull-through length, low branches, and turning radius, since several access roads are narrow and shaded by mature hardwoods.
Cell service is inconsistent along the Spring River and South Fork corridors. Wi-Fi is offered at some resorts but is generally best near the office. Bring drinking water in reserve, insect repellent for evenings, and water shoes for gravel-bar landings.
Black bears are uncommon but present in the Ozarks, so food should be stored inside the RV. Firewood is usually sold on site to limit the spread of invasive pests.

RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Save both numbers in your phone before you pull out of the driveway and relax.

Yes, an RV road trip from Salem easily crosses into Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and beyond, and interstate travel within the U.S. is standard on RVezy rentals. You're only about a mile from the Missouri border at Mammoth Spring, which makes cross-state Ozark loops popular. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations, so plan your route within the U.S. Popular runs include Branson, MO (90 miles), Lake of the Ozarks (180 miles), Memphis, TN (170 miles), and the Buffalo National River (135 miles). Confirm long-distance plans with your host through the RVezy message system before booking so they can adjust mileage if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Salem RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any Salem RV trip, so it pays to estimate ahead. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10 to 14 MPG combined). Arkansas gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, with stations in Salem, Hardy, and Mammoth Spring offering competitive rates. For a typical 3-night trip exploring the Spring River area (around 150 to 200 miles total), budget $75 to $150 in fuel for a mid-size Class C. Fill up in Salem before heading to remote campgrounds; pumps get sparse north of town.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Salem?
For the best campgrounds near Salem, AR, book 4 to 8 weeks in advance for summer weekends and Spring River float season (June through August), when sites at Riverside Resort, Mammoth Spring RV Park, and Southfork Resort fill up fast. For Arkansas State Parks like Davidsonville Historic State Park (about 45 minutes south), reservations open through the official Arkansas State Parks website up to 13 months ahead. Weekday and shoulder-season trips are usually bookable just a week or two out. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, target Sunday-through-Thursday stays; you'll find more availability and often better rates at the same campgrounds.
arkansasstateparks.com/What are driving conditions like around Salem?
Driving an RV in Salem is generally relaxed; this is small-town Ozark country, not big-city traffic. The main routes (US Highway 62/412 and Highway 9) are well-maintained two-lane roads with rolling hills, occasional sharp curves, and a few steeper grades as you head into the hills toward Mammoth Spring. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, and slow down through small towns like Salem, Hardy, and Cherokee Village where speed limits drop quickly. Winter ice and summer thunderstorms are the main weather concerns; if a storm rolls in, pull over and wait it out (Ozark storms are fast but intense). There are no urban height-clearance worries here, just country roads built for travel.
idrivearkansas.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Salem?
Campgrounds near Salem range from full-service resorts to rustic riverside sites, so check amenities before you book. Salem RV Park and Mammoth Spring RV Park and Cabins both offer water and electric hookups, with Wi-Fi available at many sites. Riverside Resort in Hardy provides 50-amp electric, a bathhouse, and on-site river access. Cell service is generally good with AT&T and T-Mobile across Fulton County, though coverage can get spotty in deeper Ozark hollows. Bring a backup hotspot if you need to work on the road.
