Campgrounds near Fort Jones
Fort Jones sits in Scott Valley in Siskiyou County, northern California, surrounded by the Klamath National Forest and within reach of the Marble Mountain Wilderness. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into the Scott and Klamath river canyons, with Highway 3 connecting south to Etna and north to Yreka and Interstate 5.
Private RV options closest to town include Mountain Village RV Park, Waiiaka RV Park, and Quigleys Station RV Park and General Store, useful for travelers who need hookups, dump stations, and easy highway access. Trailer Lane Campground and Klamath Ranch Resort Blue Heron RV Park round out the nearby options for longer stays or river-oriented trips.
Beyond private parks, the Klamath National Forest manages a network of public campgrounds along the Scott and Klamath rivers, most opening from late spring through mid-October. The Scott River Ranger Station in Fort Jones is the local Forest Service office for trip information, permits, and current conditions.
Things to do near Fort Jones
The Scott River runs Wild and Scenic through a canyon west of town, with swimming, tubing, and summer fishing when flows drop, and bigger whitewater during higher spring runoff. The Klamath River, accessed north and west of Fort Jones, offers rafting, kayaking, and salmon and steelhead fishing through outfitters permitted by the Klamath National Forest.
Hiking trailheads for the Marble Mountain Wilderness, including Lovers Camp, Boulder, and Kelsey, sit at the end of Scott River Road and feed into a network of alpine lakes stocked with trout. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the Marble Mountains crest north and south of the wilderness. Closer to town, the Fort Jones Museum, local ranches, and Scott Valley back roads give families a low-key day off the trail.

Most public campgrounds in the Klamath National Forest run on a roughly May through October season, with shoulder weeks adjusted around snowmelt and fall closures. Higher-elevation sites and many Marble Mountain trails may stay snowed in until June, and lake ice typically clears by mid-June.
Spring brings high water on the Scott and Salmon rivers, which is the window for serious whitewater but limits in-river swimming and wading. Summer is the peak window for RVs: warm dry weather, low river flows good for tubing and family fishing, and full campground operations. Late summer and early fall, through October, bring cooler nights, smaller crowds, and good trout fishing in the wilderness lakes. Fire restrictions are common from midsummer into fall when danger is rated high, and the Klamath has a history of large wildfires; check current restrictions and air quality before traveling. Winter operations at private parks vary, and most Forest Service campgrounds close.
Reservations and how to book
Forest Service campgrounds in the Klamath National Forest are booked through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Most federal campgrounds use a six-month rolling window, with new dates opening daily at 10 a.m. Eastern Time; group sites at many facilities open up to twelve months in advance. Cut-off windows before arrival vary by site, and some sites within reservable campgrounds remain first-come, first-served.
Private parks in and around Fort Jones, including Mountain Village RV Park, Waiiaka RV Park, Quigleys Station RV Park and General Store, Trailer Lane Campground, and Klamath Ranch Resort Blue Heron RV Park, are booked directly with the operator by phone or their websites. For summer weekends and holiday periods, reserve well in advance. A California Campfire Permit is required for fires, stoves, or BBQs outside developed campgrounds in the forest.
What to expect on the ground
Fort Jones is small and rural. Expect limited grocery and fuel options, no large chain stores, and patchy cell service that fades quickly once you leave Highway 3. Carry paper maps for any trip up Scott River Road or into the wilderness.
Forest Service campgrounds in the area typically offer vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, with drinking water at some developed sites but no hookups, and RV length limits are common. Hookups, dump stations, and laundry are found at the private RV parks closer to town. This is bear country, so food must be stored in vehicles or approved containers. Rattlesnakes are present along the rivers in summer, and high fire danger can change rules on short notice.

visitsiskiyou.org/How far can I drive on a typical Fort Jones RV rental?

recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1065When is the best time to rent an RV in Fort Jones?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Fort Jones RV trip, when Scott Valley days warm into the 80s and 90s and nights cool to the 40s and 50s, which is perfect sleeping weather in a motorhome. July highs average around 94Ā°F while January lows can drop to the mid-20s with snow in the surrounding mountains. June and September are the local insider favorites: wildflowers, fewer crowds, salmon and steelhead runs on the Klamath and Scott rivers, and lower nightly rates. Pro tip: book by April for prime Marble Mountain trailhead access during the short alpine summer season.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Fort+Jones&state=CA&site=MFRCan I rent an RV in Fort Jones during winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Fort Jones is absolutely doable and a quiet, beautiful way to experience Scott Valley. Snow falls in town a handful of times per year and accumulates more heavily in the surrounding Marble, Scott, and Russian Mountains. Look for RVs listed as four-season with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces, and plan to stay at parks with shore power so you can run the heater all night. Mt. Shasta Ski Park is about 60 miles southeast and Mt. Ashland is roughly 65 miles north, making this a hidden gem for ski trips. Pro tip: carry tire chains November through April since Caltrans requires them on Highway 3 and I-5 during storms.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationI have never driven an RV. Will I be okay in Fort Jones?
You will be just fine, and Fort Jones is actually a great place for first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, roads are wide, and your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup that covers driving tips, leveling, hookups, the awning, and tank dumping. Highway 3 through Scott Valley is gentle and scenic, perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel before tackling anything bigger. Most rentals here are Class C motorhomes or campervans that handle much like a large van. Pro tip: take a quick spin around town on Main Street before heading to your campground, and message your host any time during the trip if you have questions.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Scott River Road, a dead battery at Lovers Camp trailhead, or a lockout in downtown Fort Jones is one call away from help. Your host is also a direct resource via the RVezy messaging app for quick how-to questions, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell coverage can be spotty up Scott River Road and in the Marble Mountain Wilderness, so save the roadside number offline. Downtown Fort Jones, Etna, and Yreka have reliable service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fort Jones RV rental across state lines or into Oregon?
Yes, an RV road trip from Fort Jones into Oregon is one of the most popular routes, since the state line is only about 50 miles north via I-5. Crater Lake National Park, Ashland, and the Oregon Coast are all easy multi-day extensions, and RVezy coverage applies across the U.S. and Canada with host approval. Confirm your itinerary with the host before booking so they know your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a Fort Jones to Ashland to Crater Lake loop is a stunning 4-to-6 day trip with great campgrounds along the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Fort Jones RV trip?
Plan on this realistic ballpark: Class B campervans get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes typically deliver 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs land around 6 to 9 MPG. California gas prices in rural Siskiyou County are usually a bit lower than the Bay Area or Los Angeles but still higher than Oregon, so fuel up across the state line in Ashland when possible. For a 4-day loop covering Fort Jones, Mt. Shasta, and Lava Beds (about 350 miles), expect $130 to $220 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: the Pilot in Yreka, 17 miles north, has the easiest large-rig access in the area.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Fort Jones?
For peak summer (mid-June through Labor Day), reserve Klamath National Forest sites on Recreation.gov about 4 to 6 months ahead, since rolling 6-month booking windows fill quickly for popular spots like Tree of Heaven and Indian Scotty. Shoulder season trips in May, late September, and October are usually bookable just a couple weeks out. Many smaller Forest Service sites like Bridge Flat and East Fork are first-come, first-served and free, which is great for spontaneous trips. Pro tip: arrive at first-come sites by Thursday afternoon for a holiday weekend, and have a backup plan at Sarah Totten Campground on the Klamath River.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1065What are the driving conditions like around Fort Jones?
Driving around Fort Jones is generally relaxed and scenic, with Highway 3 running flat through Scott Valley and Highway 96 hugging the Wild and Scenic Klamath River. The main thing to know: Scott River Road and the routes into Marble Mountain trailheads are narrow, winding, and sometimes single-lane, so larger rigs over 25 feet should take them slowly. I-5 over the Siskiyou Summit at 4,310 feet can require chains November through April. Wildlife (deer, especially at dawn and dusk) is the most common road hazard. Pro tip: download offline maps before heading up Scott River or Sawyers Bar Road, since cell coverage drops fast outside town.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at Fort Jones area campgrounds?
Klamath National Forest campgrounds near Fort Jones range from rustic to comfortably equipped. Indian Scotty has potable water and vault toilets, Tree of Heaven offers picnic tables, fire rings, and grassy shaded sites, and Sarah Totten has river access for rafting and fishing. Most Forest Service sites do not have hookups or showers, so plan to arrive with full fresh water and empty waste tanks. For full hookups and a dump station, head 17 miles north to Yreka or 40 miles south to the Mt. Shasta area. Pro tip: fill fresh water in town before heading up Scott River Road, and grab a California Campfire Permit free at fire.ca.gov before any open flame outside a developed campground.
fs.usda.gov/r05/klamath/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat equipment is typically included in a Fort Jones RV rental?

Expect comfortable beds with linens (often included), a working kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, propane furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include outdoor chairs, a Bluetooth stereo, leveling blocks, and a generator for off-grid stays in the Marble Mountain Wilderness area. WiFi and TV vary by host. Pro tip: read the listing's amenities section carefully and message the host if you need specifics like a coffee maker, kid's car seat anchor, or extra bedding.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Fort Jones area often offer handy add-ons that make your trip easier: delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile from their location), generator use packages, propane top-ups, camp chairs and tables, bedding bundles, bike racks, and even fishing gear for the Scott and Klamath rivers. Each host sets their own mileage policy, with some offering unlimited mileage on local trips. Pickup is usually right at the host's property in Scott Valley, with a 30-to-60-minute walkthrough included. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator add-on if you are heading to a remote first-come Forest Service site, you will save time and arrive ready to relax.
fs.usda.gov/r05/klamath/recreation/camping-cabinsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly when you book, and the host sets a refundable security deposit that is held (not charged) and released after your trip once the RV is returned in the same condition. To keep things smooth, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup with photos, follow the host's mileage and generator policies, and return with the same fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: snap a quick video of the interior and exterior at both pickup and return so everyone is on the same page for a stress-free Fort Jones RV trip.
