Overview of campgrounds near Avalon
Avalon is a small community in Santa Rosa County, Florida, sitting just south of Interstate 10 at Exit 22 (Avalon Boulevard) between Milton and the Gulf Breeze peninsula. The area functions as a practical staging point for RV travellers heading to Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, and the Gulf Islands National Seashore, with the emerald-water beaches of the Florida Panhandle roughly a half-hour drive south.
Private RV parks cluster along the I-10 corridor and the bayous that feed Pensacola Bay. Avalon Landing RV Park sits on Indian Bayou, a short distance south of I-10 and a few miles east of Pensacola, with waterfront big-rig sites and a private kayak and canoe launch. Pelican Palms RV Resort, Vacay Village of Pensacola, and Splash RV Resort & Waterpark provide additional full-hookup options in the Milton and Pace area, while Florida Park Pensacola serves travellers who want a base closer to the city itself.
Public lands sit within easy driving range as well, including Blackwater River State Park and the Blackwater River State Forest to the north, and Fort Pickens Campground on Santa Rosa Island to the south.
Things to do near Avalon
The Gulf beaches are the main draw. Fort Pickens and the surrounding Gulf Islands National Seashore offer white-sand beaches, warm swimming and snorkelling water, and a fishing pier that visitors can use without a Florida fishing licence. Historic Fort Pickens, a pentagonal masonry fort built in 1834 to defend Pensacola Bay, sits one mile from the campground and was one of four Southern forts never occupied by Confederates during the Civil War.
Inland, the Blackwater corridor is built for paddlers. The Blackwater River is considered one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the world, with dark tannin water and large white sandbars, and the final two miles run through Blackwater River State Park as a designated Florida canoe trail. Blackwater River State Forest adds swimming, hiking, canoeing, birding, fishing, horseback riding, and mountain biking, and it forms part of the Florida National Scenic Trail and the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.
The National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola is a common day trip for families.

The Panhandle climate splits cleanly into four seasons. Winter runs cooler than Central or South Florida, with average highs around 61°F in January and 64°F in February, while spring is a strong stretch for beaches and sightseeing, climbing from about 70°F in March to 83°F in May. Spring break week in March is a notable local peak, and many private parks lift rates and tighten cancellation windows for that period.
Summer is hot and humid, with average highs around 88 to 90°F from June through August, and autumn stays warm well into October before easing back through November. Summer afternoons bring frequent Gulf Coast thunderstorms, and hurricane season runs June through November with the highest risk from August into October. State forest campgrounds within a county placed under a tropical storm or hurricane warning are closed by the Florida Forest Service, and reservations are automatically refunded for tropical closures.
October and early November tend to offer the best balance of warm water, lower humidity, and lighter crowds for RV trips.

We absolutely loved staying in John's RV. If you are worried about the AC not being cold enough, have no fear, it works wonderfully even in Florida's heat. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your wonderful RV. If we need to rent again, we will absolutely be reaching out.

How to book campgrounds near Avalon
Private parks along Avalon Boulevard and the I-10 corridor take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Avalon Landing RV Park, Pelican Palms RV Resort, Vacay Village of Pensacola, Splash RV Resort & Waterpark, and Florida Park Pensacola all handle bookings this way, and winter and spring-break weeks fill first, so booking several months out is standard for peak dates.
Public campgrounds use separate systems. Fort Pickens Campground reservations run through Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777, up to six months in advance. Entrance fees are required for the Fort Pickens area and are good for seven consecutive days from purchase. Blackwater River State Park and other Florida State Parks use the ReserveAmerica system, with Florida residents booking up to 11 months in advance and non-residents up to 10 months, plus a non-refundable reservation fee per booking. Blackwater River State Forest campgrounds book through the Florida State Forests ReserveAmerica portal, also up to 11 months out.
What to expect at campgrounds near Avalon
Private parks in the Avalon and Milton area lean toward full-hookup RV sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, cable, and Wi-Fi, plus laundry, pools, and dog areas. Avalon Landing RV Park sits close to the water and offers a peaceful setting a short drive from Milton. Sites vary from waterfront big-rig pads to standard back-ins, so confirming rig length and slide-out clearance at booking is worth the extra minute.
Fort Pickens is a different experience. The campground has 137 family sites with 20, 30 and 50 amp electric and water hookups, 40 non-electric tent sites, one group tent site, and eight wheelchair-accessible sites. The stay limit is 14 consecutive days and is strictly enforced. Cell service and shade vary by loop, and there are no boat ramps inside the Fort Pickens area.

weather.gov/mob/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Avalon?
You've got this. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in the Avalon area where roads are flat, lanes are wide, and traffic outside of Pensacola Beach weekends is manageable. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, slide-outs, water, propane, and the dump process, and they're a text away during your trip. If big-rig nerves are real, start with a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C (24 to 28 feet) for easy handling on Highway 90 and I-10. Pro tip: book a host with delivery for your first trip so your only job is showing up and enjoying the beach.

The closest major service hubs are Pensacola and Mobile, both well within an hour. Pro tip: snap photos of the dashboard, propane gauges, and exterior at pickup so any small issue is quick to document and resolve.

visitflorida.com/places-to-go/northwest/What kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an Avalon RV rental?
Budgeting fuel for an RV rental in Florida is straightforward once you know the numbers. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A motorhomes typically run 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but usually drop your truck's mpg by 30 to 40 percent. Florida gas prices in the Pensacola area tend to run a few cents below the state average, with diesel a bit higher. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Costco in Pensacola or Murphy USA on Highway 29 before you head out, often the cheapest in Escambia County.

Private parks like Navarre Beach Camping Resort usually have more flexibility 1 to 2 months out, though holidays (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) book up fast. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) are far easier to snag and can save you 15 to 25 percent versus weekend pricing.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Avalon and the Pensacola area?
Driving an RV around Avalon is genuinely beginner-friendly. The terrain is flat, Highway 90 and I-10 are wide and well-maintained, and most bridges (including the Pensacola Bay Bridge and Garcon Point Bridge) easily accommodate RVs up to 13'6" in height. Watch for summer afternoon thunderstorms (pull over if visibility drops), occasional fog over the bayous at dawn, and heavier beach traffic on summer Saturdays heading toward Pensacola Beach. Tolls on Garcon Point Bridge (about $5 one-way) are cash or SunPass. Avoid driving downtown Pensacola's Palafox Street area in a big rig, it's tight. Pro tip: take Sorrento Road (CR 292) for the scenic, low-stress route from Avalon down to Perdido Key.

Fort Pickens has electric and water at most sites with a central dump station near the entrance. Free dump stations are also available at the Escambia County Solid Waste facility and several truck stops along I-10. To fill fresh water, every state and national park campground has potable spigots. Pro tip: arrive with at least a quarter tank of fresh water in case you snag a no-hookup site, and pick up a 25-foot drinking-water hose at the Pensacola Camping World before you head out.

Expect a real bed (queen or king in most Class A and C units, convertible dinettes for extras), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, furnace, and seatbelted seating for everyone in your party. Many units also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, awning, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is hit or miss along the Gulf Coast, so most hosts skip it, but cell service in the Pensacola area is strong on all major carriers. Pro tip: each listing has a full amenities checklist, scroll down before booking to confirm exactly what's onboard.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Avalon RV rental?

Pickup is typically at the host's home in Avalon, Cantonment, or Pensacola, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Most hosts ask for return with the same fuel and propane level and a tidy interior. Pro tip: bundling the linens and kitchen kit for a family RV trip Avalon weekend means you can show up with just clothes and groceries, no packing stress.
