Camping near Brownsdale, Florida
Brownsdale is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Santa Rosa County in the Florida Panhandle, positioned in the northern part of the county near the Alabama state line and within roughly an hour's drive of Pensacola. The surrounding area is dominated by longleaf pine forest, blackwater rivers, and rural county roads, which gives RV travelers quick access to both inland forest camping and the Gulf Coast beaches to the south.
Campground options nearby range from full-service RV parks to quieter rural sites. River Farms and Hidden Lake Resort sit closest to the community, while Sunburst RV Resort and Brewton RV Park LLC serve travelers moving along the US-29 corridor between Pensacola and Brewton, Alabama. Airstream owners often plan around the WBCCI Pensacola Florida Unit, a local chapter of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.
The area works well as a base for exploring Blackwater River State Park and the surrounding Blackwater River State Forest, part of one of the largest remaining longleaf pine and wiregrass ecosystems in the world, along with day trips to Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key.
Things to do near Brownsdale
Paddling is the signature activity. The Blackwater River is known for its tannin-stained water, white sandbars, and gentle current, and Blackwater Canoe Rental provides equipment and shuttle options for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing trips of various lengths.
Blackwater River State Forest offers hiking on segments of the Florida National Scenic Trail, mountain biking loops near Bear Lake, freshwater fishing at Karick Lake and Hurricane Lake, and horseback riding from the Coldwater Recreation Area. Wildlife viewing is common, with white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, gopher tortoises, herons, and occasional river otters and alligators.
For a coastal day trip, families can drive south to Pensacola Beach, the National Naval Aviation Museum, and Fort Pickens at Gulf Islands National Seashore.

The Panhandle has a humid subtropical climate with warm, wet summers and mild winters. Spring, roughly March through May, tends to be the most comfortable stretch for RV camping, with lower humidity, wildflowers in the pine flatwoods, and the river cool enough for paddling but not yet crowded.
Summer brings daily highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit, high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, with July typically the wettest month. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking August into October, and state park or state forest campgrounds may close ahead of tropical storm or hurricane warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
Fall and winter are cooler and drier and appeal to snowbird travelers. Winter freezes are sporadic but do occur, and drought conditions can trigger county burn bans that restrict campfires at state forest campgrounds, so travelers should check current conditions before arriving.
How to book campgrounds in the area
Private RV parks nearby, including River Farms, Hidden Lake Resort, Sunburst RV Resort, and Brewton RV Park LLC, are booked directly through each park by phone or website. The WBCCI Pensacola Florida Unit is a club chapter, and its gatherings and hosted stays are typically coordinated through the Airstream club rather than a public reservation portal.
For nearby public land, Blackwater River State Park sites are reserved through the Florida State Parks reservation system, and Blackwater River State Forest campgrounds such as Krul, Bear Lake, Coldwater, Hurricane Lake, and Karick Lake are reserved through the Florida State Forests reservation site. Both systems allow reservations up to 11 months in advance, which is worth using for holiday weekends and cool-weather months when Gulf-bound travelers push demand well past the small site counts.
What to expect on the ground
Roads in and around Brownsdale are a mix of paved county highways and rural forest roads. Private RV parks in the area generally offer full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and pull-through sites suited to larger rigs, while state forest campgrounds tend to be smaller, with electric and water sites, dump stations, and shared restrooms with showers.
Cell coverage is reliable near US-29 and I-10 but can drop off inside the state forest. Grocery runs and fuel are easiest in Milton, Jay, or Brewton, Alabama. Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall, and expect alligators in most freshwater lakes and rivers, which is why swimming is restricted or prohibited at several state forest waters.
Campgrounds fill quickest during spring break, the paddling season, and cool winter months when snowbirds pass through.

Summer (June to August) brings hot, humid days in the upper 80s to low 90s with afternoon thunderstorms, but it's prime time for Gulf beach trips, just book RVs with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild with highs in the low 60s, making December and January great for snowbird-style trips with fewer crowds. Pro tip: late October is the local insider favorite, the Gulf is still swimmable and campgrounds are blissfully quiet.

With Florida gas prices in Santa Rosa County usually running close to the state average around $3.10 to $3.50 a gallon, a 300-mile loop to Pensacola, Destin, and back generally costs $80 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Milton or Pace before heading east, prices tend to be a bit lower than the tourist corridors near Destin and 30A, where pumps mark up fast in summer.

The Pensacola Bay Bridge has some crosswinds, take it steady in a tall Class A. Pro tip: avoid Highway 98 through Destin on summer Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., it's the area's worst beach-day backup.

santarosa.fl.gov/166/Parks-RecreationHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book, with the total broken out clearly so there are no surprises. No cash, checks, or side payments are needed. A refundable security deposit is held separately by RVezy and released back to you after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid hiccups, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup with your host, take photos of any existing scuffs or scratches, and return the RV with a similar fuel and propane level. Pro tip: keep gas station receipts from your last fill-up, they are the easiest proof if a fuel question ever comes up.
