Campgrounds near Gretna, Florida
Gretna sits in Gadsden County in the eastern Florida Panhandle, roughly 25 miles west of Tallahassee and within an easy drive of the Apalachicola River, Lake Talquin, and Lake Seminole. The area works well as an RV base for anglers, paddlers, and families looking for state park hiking without the crowds of coastal Florida.
Private options in the area include Flat Creek Family Campground and RV Park, while Ingram's Marina LLC, Whippoorwill Sportsman's Lodge, Ed & Bernice's Fish Camp, and YaYas Lake Seminole RV Park cluster near the Lake Seminole shoreline about 30 to 40 minutes northwest. Lake Seminole is a reservoir on the Georgia-Florida line where the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers meet before flowing south from the Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam as the Apalachicola River, with 376 miles of shoreline and pine and hardwood forests coming down to the water.
Public camping in the same corridor includes Three Rivers State Park in Sneads, Torreya State Park, where steep bluffs rise more than 150 feet above the Apalachicola River and a yurt plus 30 shaded campsites with electric and water hookups accommodate overnight visitors, and Eastbank Campground on Lake Seminole, a year-round U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park with 65 sites, most with electric and water hookups.
Things to do near Gretna
Fishing drives most trips here. Lake Seminole holds largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream, with more than 79 species of fish identified in its waters, and options to fish from shore, dock, or boat. Ingram's Marina LLC, Ed & Bernice's Fish Camp, and Whippoorwill Sportsman's Lodge cater specifically to anglers with boat access.
For hiking and scenery, Torreya State Park offers rugged trails through steephead ravines and bluffs, terrain unusual for Florida, and its hardwood forests produce the finest fall color display in the state. Ranger-guided tours of the 1849 Gregory House add a history stop suitable for older kids.
Wildlife watching is strong across the region: bald eagles, raccoons, alligators, migratory waterfowl, hawks, and gopher tortoises are commonly seen around the lake and surrounding pine and hardwood forest.

The Gretna area operates on a year-round camping calendar, but conditions shift sharply by season. Spring and late fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, lower humidity, and manageable insect pressure. Wildflowers and migrating songbirds peak in March and April.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms driven by the region's humid subtropical climate. Mosquitoes and biting flies become an issue, especially near the lake. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the greatest activity in August and September; Panhandle parks have taken significant storm damage in recent memory, and campgrounds in the corridor still show effects from past hurricanes.
Fall cools noticeably after October and delivers the region's best hardwood color at Torreya, typically peaking in late November. Winter is mild but variable, with freezing temperatures happening periodically from November to April at Tallahassee, and one or two nights a year on average dropping to 20 F or lower. Snowbird traffic increases December through February, so book earlier for private RV parks during those months.
How to book campgrounds near Gretna
Reservation systems split by ownership. Florida state parks, including Three Rivers and Torreya, use the state's central system: Florida residents may book campsites or cabins up to 11 months in advance and non-residents up to 10 months, either online at the Florida State Parks reservation site or by calling 800-326-3521. Popular weekends in spring and fall fill early, especially waterfront sites.
Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Seminole such as Eastbank are booked through Recreation.gov. Reservations made at the start of the booking window may not be changed for 18 days, and standard Recreation.gov cancellation and change fees apply.
Private parks including Flat Creek Family Campground and RV Park, YaYas Lake Seminole RV Park, Ingram's Marina LLC, Whippoorwill Sportsman's Lodge, and Ed & Bernice's Fish Camp typically take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig length limits, hookup amperage, and check-in windows directly, since smaller family-run camps do not always publish real-time availability.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Gretna range from full-hookup private RV parks to state and Corps park loops with water and electric only. State park campgrounds at Torreya and Three Rivers generally provide water and electric at the site plus a central dump station, with no sewer at the pad. Eastbank on Lake Seminole offers 65 sites, most with electric and water hookups, plus flush toilets, showers, laundry, and a dump station, and can handle rigs up to about 50 feet on many pads.
Roads into some of the smaller lake camps are rural and can be rough on trailers, so scout ahead if towing a large rig. Cell coverage is generally usable but not uniform.
Wildlife is part of the experience. Alligators inhabit Lake Seminole and connected waters, so keep children and pets away from shorelines at dawn and dusk, and expect biting insects from late spring through early fall. Grocery and fuel options exist in Chattahoochee, Sneads, and Quincy, but stock the RV before arrival if staying at a remote lake site.

floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/torreya-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Gretna?

Summers are hot and humid with highs in the low 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while winter nights occasionally dip into the 30s, perfect for campfires. Pro tip: November and February are quietly the best months. Campsites are easier to grab, rental rates dip, and you can explore Tallahassee and the Panhandle beaches without summer crowds.
weather.gov/tae/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I actually be okay driving one?
You'll do great, and Gretna is honestly one of the friendliest places in Florida to learn. Roads around Gadsden County are flat, lightly trafficked, and surrounded by farmland, giving first-time renters plenty of room to get comfortable. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, propane, and the bathroom system, and you'll have their number plus 24/7 roadside assistance the entire trip. Pro tip: take your first hour on US-90 west toward Chattahoochee, a quiet, straight stretch perfect for getting a feel for the rig before merging onto Interstate 10 for the longer haul.
fdot.gov/safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never alone on the road. Every RV rental in Gretna booked through RVezy with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, so help is just a phone call away whether you are at Lake Talquin or rolling down Interstate 10. Your host is also reachable for questions about quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV license plate and VIN to make any call faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Gretna RV rental into Georgia or Alabama?
Yes, cross-state RV road trip from Gretna adventures are completely doable. Gretna sits just 25 miles south of the Georgia state line and roughly 80 miles east of Alabama, and most RVezy hosts happily allow travel throughout the continental US. Popular routes include heading north to Bainbridge, GA and Lake Seminole, west to Gulf Shores, AL (about 4 hours), or east to St. Augustine (about 3.5 hours). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage doesn't extend across that border. Pro tip: confirm your route with the host when booking so they can flag any mileage or destination preferences in advance.
fmcsa.dot.gov/mission/policy/state-lawsHow much should I budget for fuel on a Gretna RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your budget, but it's very manageable around Gretna. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs typically deliver 6 to 10 MPG. Florida gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, and Gadsden County stations along US-90 and Interstate 10 are often cheaper than Tallahassee proper. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, expect roughly $150 to $200 in gas. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app and fill up in Quincy or Midway, where prices tend to beat the interstate exit stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Gretna?
For the best sites, book Florida State Parks 11 months ahead through the official Florida State Parks reservation system, especially for Lake Talquin, Torreya, and Three Rivers, which fill quickly for weekends from October through April. Apalachicola National Forest sites at Wright Lake can be booked via Recreation.gov up to 6 months out. Private RV parks in Quincy and Midway typically have more last-minute availability, often just a week or two ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 11 months before your trip start date at 8:00 AM ET, the moment Florida State Parks releases new inventory, and you'll snag waterfront sites others miss.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Gretna?
Driving an RV around Gretna is refreshingly stress-free. US-90 and Interstate 10 run right through the area with wide lanes, gentle grades, and minimal urban congestion, very different from South Florida traffic. The terrain is rolling hills and pine forest, with no mountain passes or steep descents to worry about. Watch for afternoon summer thunderstorms (typically June to September), which can drop heavy rain quickly, and stay alert for deer at dawn and dusk on rural county roads. Pro tip: if you're heading to Panama City Beach, take US-231 south from I-10 rather than smaller backroads. It's RV-friendly, well-maintained, and the most direct route from Gretna to the coast.

Payment for your Gretna RV rental is handled securely through RVezy, so there is no cash exchange with your host. You pay your trip total at booking by credit card, and a separate refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. As long as you return the rig in the same condition and follow the mileage and generator policies, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take dated photos and a short walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off. It is the best way to protect your full deposit and avoid disputes.
