Campgrounds and RV parks near Jay, FL

Paddling is the signature activity. The Blackwater and Coldwater rivers offer clear, sand-bottom runs popular for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing, with several outfitters operating shuttles out of nearby Milton. Fishing is strong on the Escambia River, and the Blackwater is designated an Outstanding Florida Water with a 31-mile Florida Designated Paddling Trail on its upper reach. On land, Blackwater River State Forest carries part of the Florida National Scenic Trail and the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, along with mountain-biking and equestrian routes at recreation areas like Bear Lake and Coldwater. Wildlife viewing is a draw, with white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, bobcats, and river otters commonly seen. Gulf beaches at Navarre, Pensacola Beach, and Perdido Key are within about an hour's drive for a day trip.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of the Panhandle. Temperatures are mild, humidity is lower than in high summer, and biting insects are less aggressive. Wildflowers bloom across the pine flatwoods through spring, and river levels typically settle into good paddling range. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms a near-daily occurrence and July the wettest month, averaging close to 200 mm of rainfall. It is also Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and peaks in August and September. The Florida Forest Service closes all campgrounds and recreation areas on state forests when the county is placed under a Tropical Storm or Hurricane Warning, so travelers should watch forecasts closely and check the state's burn ban dashboard during dry stretches. Winter is mild but variable. Daytime highs in the low 60s Fahrenheit are common, and freezing nights happen a few times each season. Many private parks stay open year-round, though water-based activities slow down.

Sites near Jay skew rural. Expect gravel or dirt pads, pine shade, and quiet nights, with cell service that can be spotty once off the main highways. Full hookups are common at private RV parks, while state forest campgrounds generally offer water and electric with a shared dump station rather than sewer at each site. Mosquitoes, ticks, and no-see-ums are active from spring through fall, so bring repellent and consider screen rooms. Alligators inhabit the lakes and slow river reaches, and white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and bobcats are common in the state forest. Keep pets leashed and food secured. Roads into rural campgrounds sometimes include short dirt or sand stretches. At state forest sites, vehicles pulling a camper must fit completely within the site, so larger rigs should confirm site length before arrival.
