Campgrounds near Monticello, Florida
Monticello sits in Jefferson County in Florida's Red Hills region, about 25 miles east of Tallahassee via US-90. The town is small and rural, and most RV camping is at private parks in and around the city or at Florida State Parks within an easy drive. A Stone's Throw RV Park and Eastern Pines RV Park are the closest private options for RV travelers basing themselves near downtown, with Tallahassee RV Park, Big Oak RV Park, and Madison RV & Golf Resort providing additional full-hookup sites within roughly an hour in either direction along the I-10 corridor.
The surrounding landscape is rolling farmland, longleaf pine forest, and spring-fed rivers, not the flat coastal Florida many travelers picture. The Aucilla and Wacissa Rivers, Aucilla Wildlife Management Area, and Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park are all within a short drive.
Expect a quiet, small-town base with easy highway access to Tallahassee to the west and Madison and the Suwannee River corridor to the east.
Things to do near Monticello
In town, the 1890 Monticello Opera House still hosts performances, and the historic downtown grid is walkable, with the Jefferson Arts Gallery and the Monticello Ecological Park. Families often add Aunt Louise's Farm, which runs seasonal events in spring and fall.
On the water, the Wacissa River is the standout: launch a canoe or kayak at Wacissa Headwaters Park for an easy paddle toward Blue Springs, or book a narrated airboat tour. The Aucilla River adds more paddling and fishing options, though shoals and old rock dams make it a route for experienced paddlers.
Day trips reach Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park, home to Florida's tallest Native American ceremonial mound, plus canopy roads and rural cycling routes through the Red Hills, and Lake Jackson Mounds farther west near Tallahassee.

The most comfortable stretches for RV camping are spring, roughly March through May, and fall, from October into November. Days are mild, humidity is lower, and wildflowers and historic-neighborhood walks are at their best. The Monticello Watermelon Festival in mid to late June is the marquee local event, drawing crowds for its parade, bed races, and barbecue, so book early if a trip lines up with it.
Summer, June through August, is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms most days. Rivers and springs stay cool and become the main draw. This is also Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from August into September, so travelers should track NHC advisories and know that state parks along the coast can close ahead of storms.
Winter is mild by most standards, with cool nights and occasional cold snaps. Snowbird demand pushes private RV parks along I-10 toward capacity from January through March, and monthly sites at some parks fill months in advance.
How to book a site near Monticello
Private parks around Monticello, including A Stone's Throw RV Park, Eastern Pines RV Park, Tallahassee RV Park, Madison RV & Golf Resort, and Big Oak RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Snowbird season and festival weekends fill first, so aim to book winter and spring stays several months out.
Florida State Parks use a single reservation system at floridastateparks.org or by phone at 800-326-3521. Florida residents may make campsite or cabin reservations up to 11 months in advance of their arrival date. Non-Florida residents may make campsite or cabin reservations up to 10 months in advance of their arrival date. New sites become available for reservation daily at 8 a.m. Eastern time. Sites not reserved or occupied are released to walk-in visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.
Reservations at popular parks are often gone within minutes of the window opening, so log in ahead of time and have dates and site preferences ready.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Monticello and along I-10 are easy for larger rigs, but many rural side roads leading to rivers and wildlife management areas are narrow, canopy-covered, and sandy. Check clearance and surface conditions before turning off a state highway with a big fifth-wheel or Class A.
Private RV parks in the area typically offer full hookups, level pull-throughs, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Cell coverage is generally solid near town and along I-10 but drops in the river bottoms and pine forests. Florida State Park campgrounds most often provide water and electric at the site rather than sewer, so plan dump-station stops.
Bring insect repellent year-round, sunscreen, and rain gear in summer. Alligators are present in most local waterways; keep pets leashed and away from the water's edge.
