Camping near Ponce de Leon, Florida
Ponce de Leon is a small town in Holmes County in Florida's Panhandle, roughly midway between Tallahassee and Pensacola along Interstate 10. The area is defined by the aquifer-fed springs that pour out of the ground at a steady temperature year round, along with the slow, sand-bottomed creeks that drain toward the Choctawhatchee River basin. RV travelers use it as a quiet inland base within about an hour's drive of Panama City Beach and the Emerald Coast.
The main draw is Ponce de Leon Springs State Park, whose main spring holds a constant 68 degrees Fahrenheit year-round and produces 14 million gallons of water daily. The state park is day-use only, with no on-site campground, so RV travelers stay at nearby private campgrounds and use the springs as a day trip.
Options close to town include Ponce de Leon RV Park, Vortex Spring Adventures, Sapphire Island Camping and RV Resort, Holmes Creek Camping & RV Resort near Vernon, and Twin Lakes Camp Resort near DeFuniak Springs. Together they cover full-hookup pull-throughs, waterfront tent sites, and cabin lodging.
Things to do around Ponce de Leon
Swimming and snorkeling in the 68-degree spring at Ponce de Leon Springs State Park is the signature activity, along with two short self-guided nature trails that wind through hardwood forest. Anglers can fish for catfish, largemouth bass, chain pickerel and panfish in the park.
Vortex Spring Adventures is a private dive and swim resort with water slides, rope swings, a diving platform, and one of the largest cave-diving operations in Florida. Certified divers can access the cavern system with staff supervision.
Holmes Creek is a designated state paddling trail with an on-site launch at Holmes Creek Camping & RV Resort, and Morrison Springs County Park offers a boardwalk, a public swim area, and diver access to a second-magnitude spring a short drive south.

63° / 43°F 120 mmMild days, chilly nights; spring water feels warm.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. From late March through May, daytime highs climb from the mid-seventies into the mid-eighties Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and rainfall is near its annual low, which makes it a good time for paddling Holmes Creek and hiking the trails at the state park.
Summer is the peak season for the springs themselves. The constant 68-degree water is the main reason families visit in June, July, and August, when highs sit near 91 degrees Fahrenheit and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June through November, with peak activity from August into October, and RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories.
Winters are mild but cool. January is the coldest month, with average highs near 59 degrees and lows around 43 degrees Fahrenheit, the spring water feels warmer than the air, and swimming crowds thin considerably. Campgrounds in the area generally stay open all four seasons.
How to book campgrounds near Ponce de Leon
Private campgrounds in the area take reservations directly through their own websites or through third-party platforms such as Campspot and RoverPass. Vortex Spring Adventures allows online booking for RV sites, tent sites, primitive sites, cabins, and lodge rooms. Holmes Creek Camping & RV Resort books online and by phone, and has a limited number of pull-through full-hookup sites, so weekends fill early.
Ponce de Leon Springs State Park is day-use only and does not accept camping reservations. Vehicle entry is $4 per vehicle, paid at an honor box at the gate, and picnic pavilions can be reserved in advance outside the peak summer window.
For summer weekends and holidays, reserving several weeks ahead is advisable, particularly for waterfront sites.
What to expect on the ground
The landscape is flat pine flatwoods and hardwood bottomland along slow tannic creeks, not the sugar-white beaches of the coast. Expect biting insects near water in warm months, especially at dawn and dusk, and pack repellent. Alligators are present, and signs along the Spring Run Trail at Ponce de Leon Springs State Park warn hikers of the possibility, so keep a safe distance and leash pets.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Interstate 10 corridor but can be patchy on back roads and inside campgrounds set deep in the pines. Grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are available in Bonifay, Vernon, and DeFuniak Springs within a short drive.
Sites vary from tightly spaced full-hookup pull-throughs to shaded waterfront pads on gravel. Confirm site length, hookup amps, and whether a fire ring is included when booking, as amenities differ by site number even within the same park.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ponce de Leon, FL?
Your dollar goes a long way here. RV rental in Ponce de Leon typically runs about $90 to $160 per night for travel trailers and campervans, while larger Class C and Class A motorhomes generally range from $175 to $300 nightly on the RVezy marketplace. Pro tip: filter listings by 'Instant Book' and message hosts about weekly discounts. Many owners knock 10 to 20 percent off for stays of five nights or longer, which pairs perfectly with a slow loop through the Panhandle springs.

Great news, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ponce de Leon. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RV use, regardless of size, so even a 35-foot Class A motorhome cruising down Interstate 10 is fair game with the standard license already in your wallet. To book on RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set.

Once you arrive, dogs on leash are welcome at Ponce de Leon Springs State Park's picnic and trail areas (just not in the swimming basin), and nearby Morrison Springs County Park also has leashed-pet access along the boardwalks. Florida rest areas along I-10 even have dedicated dog walk zones with cleanup bags provided. Pack a collapsible bowl, plenty of water, and you and your four-legged copilot will fit right into Holmes County RV camping life.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pets-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Ponce de Leon?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to start your trip. RV delivery in Ponce de Leon is offered by many RVezy hosts who will tow or drive the RV directly to Ponce De Leon RV Resort on Highway 81, Vortex Spring, or even a private property in DeFuniak Springs, then level it, hook up shore power, and walk you through every system. Delivery is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV or you would rather skip the highway drive. Use the 'Delivery' filter when searching listings, and message the host with your campground name plus dates. Many hosts include free delivery within a set radius, so just ask.
fdot.gov/How far can I travel on a Ponce de Leon RV trip?
You can roam wide from this Panhandle base. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, with most Ponce de Leon listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per day, and some featuring RV rental with unlimited mileage for true road-trip freedom. From Ponce de Leon, you are about 45 minutes from Destin's emerald beaches (40 miles), 90 minutes to Panama City Beach (75 miles), 2 hours to Pensacola (110 miles), 2.5 hours to Tallahassee (140 miles), and around 4 hours to New Orleans (240 miles). When messaging hosts, ask about their per-mile overage rate and any unlimited-mileage upgrades. Plan your route, and the Gulf Coast is yours.
fhwa.dot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Ponce de Leon to park my RV?
You have excellent options within minutes of the springs. Ponce De Leon RV Resort on North Highway 81 sits five minutes from the state park with full hookups, 30/50 amp service, and pull-through sites for big rigs. Vortex Spring Adventures off Vortex Spring Lane combines RV sites with world-class cave diving. Sapphire Island RV Park (formerly Sunset King) offers waterfront sites between Lake Holley and Lake King, and a short hop east lands you at Live Oak Landing in Freeport. For where to park an RV in Ponce de Leon with quick I-10 access, the local Ponce De Leon RV Park wins on convenience. Book ahead during March and April, when snowbirds and spring breakers fill sites fast.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ponce-de-leon-springs-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Ponce de Leon?
The Panhandle delivers RV-friendly weather most of the year. The sweet spot for RV camping in Ponce de Leon is mid-October through late May, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 80 degree Fahrenheit range and humidity drops off. March and April bring wildflowers and 75-degree spring swims. Summer (June through early September) is hot and humid with highs in the low 90s plus afternoon thunderstorms, but the spring stays a refreshing 68 degrees year-round, so it is still magical, just plan for early starts. Hurricane season runs June through November, so watch forecasts. Insider tip: visit in early November for warm days, cool nights, and uncrowded trails along the Choctawhatchee.
weather.gov/tae/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay in Ponce de Leon?
You will do great, and you will not be doing it alone. Ponce de Leon sits on quiet rural roads off Interstate 10, so there is plenty of low-pressure pavement to get comfortable before you hit any bigger highways. Every RVezy host provides an in-person walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling jacks to dumping tanks to your propane fridge, and many hosts include a printed cheat sheet. If nerves are still in play, request delivery so the RV arrives parked and ready at your campground. Pro tip: do a slow loop around the campground loop road first to feel out the turning radius. Within a day, you will feel like you have been doing this forever.
nhtsa.gov/road-safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a dead battery at Vortex Spring, a flat on I-10, or a stuck slide-out is handled with one phone call, day or night. The RVezy support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Your host is typically the fastest first call for quirks specific to their RV, like a finicky water pump. Save both numbers in your phone before you pull away, snap a photo of the VIN, and travel with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ponce de Leon RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, multi-state RV road trips from Ponce de Leon are very doable. Most hosts welcome travel throughout the southeastern U.S., and popular runs include west along I-10 to New Orleans (about 240 miles), north to the Smoky Mountains (around 470 miles), or east to St. Augustine (about 290 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by some hosts depending on their insurance, so message them directly before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Ponce de Leon RV road trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but easy to estimate. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs typically deliver 6 to 10 mpg. Florida gas prices around the Panhandle generally run a few cents under the national average, with stations in Ponce de Leon, DeFuniak Springs, and Bonifay being the most convenient fill-ups near I-10. For a 300-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: download GasBuddy and fuel up east of Pensacola where prices are usually lowest in the region. Build a small cushion and you will cruise stress-free.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ponce de Leon?
Book sooner rather than later for the best pick. For spring break (March), Memorial Day, July 4th, and the snowbird stretch from January through March, reserve private parks like Ponce De Leon RV Resort and Vortex Spring 3 to 6 months ahead. Florida State Parks use ReserveAmerica and open reservations 11 months in advance, which matters if you want a spot at nearby Grayton Beach or Topsail Hill Preserve. For off-peak weekdays in late fall or early winter, two to four weeks lead time is usually plenty. Insider tip: set a calendar alert for the 11-month state-park release date at 8 a.m. Eastern, and you will snag the prime sites.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reserve-campsiteWhat are driving conditions like around Ponce de Leon?
Driving here is genuinely relaxing. Ponce de Leon sits at Exit 96 off Interstate 10, with wide lanes, mild grades, and pine-forested two-lane country roads like Highway 81 connecting the town to the springs and surrounding campgrounds. Traffic is light outside of summer holiday weekends, when beachbound visitors clog US-331 south to Destin and 30A. Watch for sudden pop-up thunderstorms June through September (pull over if rain gets blinding) and keep an eye out for deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, with no mountain passes or tight switchbacks, making this Florida Panhandle RV trip one of the easier drives in the Southeast.
fl511.com/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Ponce de Leon?
Local parks come well equipped. Ponce De Leon RV Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30 and 50 amp electric), Wi-Fi, a dump station, laundry, a dog park, and a swimming pool. Vortex Spring has water, electric, restrooms, and a dive shop right on-site. For fresh water fills and dump stations between stays, Sapphire Island and Live Oak Landing both have on-site facilities. Cell coverage is solid for Verizon and AT&T, but Wi-Fi speeds vary, so download Netflix before you arrive. Most parks accept big rigs up to 40 feet, with several handling 45-foot plus. Pro tip: confirm 50-amp availability when booking if you are running a larger Class A in summer heat.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reserve-campsiteWhat features will my Ponce de Leon RV rental have inside?
You are getting a full home on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in Ponce de Leon include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or sofa for extra sleepers, fully equipped kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave), bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seats for everyone on board. Larger Class C and Class A rentals often add a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, and TV with streaming. Many hosts include camp chairs, an outdoor mat, and basic kitchen kits. Wi-Fi and solar panels are common upgrades worth asking about for boondocking at Vortex Spring. Check the listing photos closely and message the host with any must-have, and you will roll out fully outfitted.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose on RVezy?
You can customize your rental to match the trip. Popular add-ons from Ponce de Leon hosts include linens and bedding kits ($25 to $75), kitchen packages, generators, propane fills, portable grills, bikes, kayaks, and outdoor furniture, all visible on the listing page during booking. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Ponce de Leon, Bonifay, or DeFuniak Springs, and many hosts offer RV delivery in Ponce de Leon to your campsite for a flat fee or free within a set radius. Mileage policies vary, with daily caps from 100 miles up to unlimited mileage tiers. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus setup to skip the driving entirely on your first family RV trip in Ponce de Leon.
usa.gov/state-consumerHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at the time of booking, never in cash to the host, which keeps every transaction protected and documented. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the RV) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid deposit hiccups, take timestamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and dump instructions, and report any small issue right away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat is one local insider tip for visiting Ponce de Leon Springs?
Here is the move locals know. Ponce de Leon Springs State Park frequently reaches capacity and temporarily closes the gate on hot weekends, so arrive before 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays to guarantee entry, then enjoy the 68-degree spring all to yourself before the crowd builds. Park admission is just a few dollars per vehicle (use the honor box if the ranger station is unattended), and the two short nature trails (Spring Run and Sandy Creek) are perfect right after a swim. Pair it with a 25-minute drive south on Highway 81 to Morrison Springs County Park for a second crystal-clear dip. That is a true Florida Panhandle day no guidebook quite captures.
