Camping near Vernon, Florida
Vernon sits in Washington County in the Florida Panhandle, roughly 40 minutes north of Panama City Beach and a short drive from I-10. The town is best known as a paddling hub on Holmes Creek, a spring-fed tributary of the Choctawhatchee River with more than 15 major springs along its length, including Cypress Spring just upstream.
RV travelers use Vernon as a base for spring-country day trips. Holmes Creek Camping & RV Resort and Outback Springs RV Resort provide hookup sites close to the water, while Ponce de Leon RV Park sits near Ponce de Leon Springs State Park about 30 minutes west. Vortex Spring Adventures, north of Ponce de Leon, adds RV and tent sites at a private dive and swim park.
For a state-park option, Falling Waters State Park Campground lies about 20 minutes north near Chipley, offering 24 full-facility sites in an upland pine forest next to Florida's tallest waterfall.
Things to do around Vernon
Water is the main draw. Paddlers launch at Vernon Wayside Park or Culpepper Landing and head upstream on Holmes Creek to reach spring-fed swimming holes such as Cypress Spring and Beckton Spring, both accessible only by water. Rental canoes, kayaks, tubes, and shuttles are available in town.
Vortex Spring Adventures runs a 68-degree spring basin with a rope swing, water slides, and one of Florida's largest dive-training operations. Ponce de Leon Springs State Park has a swimming area, a short spring-run swim, and shaded hiking trails.
Falling Waters State Park adds a boardwalk to a 73-foot waterfall that drops into a cylindrical sinkhole, a small lake with a sand beach, a butterfly garden, and ranger-led programs at the amphitheater.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Vernon. March through May brings warm days, lower humidity, and manageable rainfall, and October is typically the driest month of the year, with clear skies extending into November.
Summer is peak season for the springs. June through August is hot and humid with daily highs near 90, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and August ranking as the wettest month of the year. Water attractions at Vortex Spring and along Holmes Creek are in full swing, and campgrounds near the springs fill quickly on weekends. This span also overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from August through October and can force closures at coastal and inland parks alike.
Winter is mild. Daytime highs run in the low 60s and freezes are occasional but brief. Falling Waters State Park stays open year-round, and off-season paddling on Holmes Creek is a good option for anglers, birders, and anyone wanting the springs without summer crowds.
Booking and reservations
Florida State Parks, including Falling Waters State Park Campground, take reservations through the Florida State Parks central reservation system online or by phone. Florida residents can book campsites up to 11 months in advance and non-residents up to 10 months in advance, with a non-refundable reservation fee applied per transaction. Falling Waters has 24 sites with water and electric hookups, some with full sewer connections, plus a dump station, so summer weekends book out early.
Private parks handle their own reservations. Holmes Creek Camping & RV Resort, Outback Springs RV Resort, Ponce de Leon RV Park, and Vortex Spring Adventures accept bookings directly by phone or through their websites. For summer holiday weekends near the springs, aim to reserve at least a couple of months out.
What to expect in the Vernon area
This is rural Panhandle country. Cell service can be patchy on back roads, and the closest full grocery runs are in Chipley, Bonifay, or Panama City. Fuel and basic supplies are available in Vernon and Ponce de Leon. Campground layouts vary: state park sites at Falling Waters are shaded and level in pine forest, while private RV resorts near the springs mix gravel pull-throughs with waterfront tent areas.
Expect biting insects in the warmer months, especially near the creek, and bring water shoes for limestone spring bottoms. A Florida freshwater fishing license is required for most anglers 16 or older fishing park waters, and pets are generally allowed at area campgrounds on a leash. Alligators and snakes live along Holmes Creek, so give wildlife space.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Vernon, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Vernon, FL?
An RV rental in Vernon, FL is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Florida Panhandle. On RVezy, motorhomes average around $200 per night and towable travel trailers run closer to $120 per night, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts. For a cheap RV rental in Vernon, filter for travel trailers, book mid-week, or aim for shoulder months like late February or October when demand drops. Pro tip: pair your booking with a campsite at nearby Holmes Creek Camping and RV Resort, where basic sites typically run $30 to $50 a night, so your total daily cost can land well under most beach hotels in Panama City Beach, just 40 minutes south.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vernon,FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Vernon, FL?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Vernon, FL. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required for the Class A, Class B, Class C, and towable rigs listed on RVezy. Approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout, so there's nothing to print or hand over in person. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're ready to roll. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to hop into a motorhome rental in Vernon and head straight for Florida Caverns or the Emerald Coast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside help included in Vernon, FL?
Yes, every RV rental in Vernon, FL booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you're covered from the moment you pull off Highway 79. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you can pick the peace of mind that fits your trip. It provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on a backroad near Holmes Creek or on I-10 heading toward Tallahassee. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers before you confirm, since upgrading is a small daily cost that's well worth it on a longer Florida Panhandle road trip.

Booking an RV rental in Vernon is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. There's a money-back grace period after you book, plus additional flexibility depending on how far out your trip is. Because Vernon sits in Florida's hurricane-prone zone from June through November, that built-in flexibility is reassuring. If a host ever cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides credits. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred rig and dates, then review the full cancellation details on RVezy's Help Center before you confirm. Support is available if you need to talk through changes.

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Vernon, FL is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see every host who welcomes four-legged guests. Many Panhandle owners are dog lovers themselves and often leave bowls, beds, and outdoor tie-outs in the rig. Once you arrive, your pup will love Falling Waters State Park's leashed nature trails about 20 minutes north, and leashed dogs are welcome in designated areas at nearby Ponce de Leon Springs State Park. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any size or breed preferences, and ask about Holmes Creek paddle launches where leashed dogs can splash in the cool spring-fed water all summer.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pets-florida-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Vernon, FL?
Yes, RV delivery in Vernon, FL is offered by many RVezy hosts, and it's a game-changer if you're a first-time renter or just don't want to drive a big rig down two-lane Highway 79. The host will tow or drive the motorhome to your campsite at Holmes Creek Camping and RV Resort, Hitchin Post Corral, or a private property, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are set by each host based on distance and rig size. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your exact campground address so they can quote you upfront, many offer reduced rates for week-long stays.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vernon,FloridaHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Vernon, FL?
You can drive as far as you'd like on your Vernon RV trip, and many RVezy hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a road trip from Vernon out to Pensacola Beach (about 110 miles west), down to Panama City Beach (about 40 miles south), or east to Tallahassee (about 100 miles). Each listing clearly shows the host's daily mileage allowance and the per-mile fee if you exceed it, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Gulf Coast loop or a swing up to Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna (about 35 miles), filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host to discuss a flat package for multi-day road-trippers.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vernon,FloridaWhere are the best campgrounds near Vernon, FL?
You're spoiled for choice with campgrounds near Vernon. Holmes Creek Camping and RV Resort sits right on the spring-fed creek with full hookups and kayak launches. Hitchin Post Corral and Campground is a family-run park just minutes from town with 30/50-amp sites. Falling Waters State Park Campground, about 20 minutes north in Chipley, lets you camp beside Florida's tallest waterfall (73 feet). For Gulf views, St. Andrews State Park Campground is about 35 miles south near Panama City Beach. Sunset King Lake RV Resort offers big-rig-friendly pull-throughs. Pro tip: Florida state park sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, so book early for your RV camping in Vernon trip.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/falling-waters-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip in Vernon, FL?
The sweet spot for a Vernon RV trip is October through April, when daytime highs typically sit in a comfortable 65 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit range and humidity drops noticeably from summer levels. Winter nights in Vernon can dip into the 40s, but most RVs handle that easily with the furnace running. Summers (June to September) regularly top 90 degrees with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, plus it's peak Atlantic hurricane season, so plan accordingly. Pro tip: late March is magic, the dogwoods bloom around Falling Waters State Park, Holmes Creek paddling is glassy and cool, and snowbird crowds have started heading home, meaning better RV availability and lower nightly rates on RVezy.
weather.gov/tae/I have never rented an RV before, is renting an RV in Vernon, FL easy?
Renting an RV in Vernon is genuinely first-time-friendly, and you won't be left guessing how anything works. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the slide-outs, water tanks, propane, generator, and AC before you drive a single mile. You can also message the host through the listing before you book to ask about driving on Vernon's quiet two-lane roads or backing into a wooded site at Holmes Creek. If you want zero stress, choose delivery and setup so the rig is already parked, leveled, and hooked up when you arrive. Pro tip: for your first time renting an RV, pick a Class C or smaller travel trailer, both drive much like a large pickup and are forgiving on Panhandle backroads.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vernon,FloridaWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Vernon, FL trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Vernon includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at Hitchin Post Corral or out on a backroad near Wausau. Roadside covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for any vehicle-specific questions. Pro tip: snap a photo of the emergency roadside number and your RV's make, model, and license plate during your walkthrough and keep it on your phone. Cell service can get patchy in the pine forests between Vernon and Falling Waters State Park, so being prepared makes any hiccup a non-event.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Vernon, FL RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
You're free to cross state lines on your RV road trip from Vernon. Popular routes include west into Alabama (the state line is just about 45 minutes north), east toward Georgia, or up the Gulf Coast through Mississippi and Louisiana. Travel into Canada may be permitted with host approval, since some hosts and protection plans allow it, so message before booking. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because the protection plan does not extend coverage south of the border. Pro tip: the Florida-Alabama Gulf Shores loop from Vernon is a fantastic 4-to-5-day trip, with Gulf State Park's beachfront campsites being a popular overnight just two hours west via I-10.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for my RV rental in Vernon, FL?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, so it's smart to plan ahead. Florida gas prices typically run around $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon, and Vernon has stations on Highway 79 plus several in nearby Chipley along I-10. Expect roughly 7 to 10 MPG for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a campervan rental in Vernon, and 12 to 16 MPG for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Pro tip: fill up in Chipley rather than the beach towns, gas often runs higher in Panama City Beach during peak season, so top off before heading south to the coast.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Vernon, FL?
For peak winter and spring (December through April), reserve Vernon-area campgrounds 6 to 11 months ahead, especially Florida state parks like Falling Waters and Florida Caverns, which release sites up to 11 months out through ReserveAmerica. Private parks like Holmes Creek Camping and RV Resort and Hitchin Post Corral typically book directly through their websites or by phone and have more flexibility for shorter notice. Summer weekday availability is usually wide open. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for the 11-month booking window if you want a waterfront site at Falling Waters, popular sites often sell out quickly. Pair your campsite booking with your RV rental in Vernon, FL on the same day to lock in your whole trip.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservation-informationWhat are the local roads like for driving an RV around Vernon, FL?
Driving an RV around Vernon is refreshingly mellow, this is small-town Panhandle Florida, not Miami traffic. Highway 79 (the main north-south route) and Highway 277 are flat, well-maintained two-lane roads with wide shoulders, perfect for first-time RVers easing into bigger rigs. I-10 runs about 15 minutes north through Chipley if you need to make time east or west. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches, and afternoon summer thunderstorms can be intense but brief. Pro tip: most bridges and underpasses in Washington County clear standard RV heights comfortably, but if you're driving a tall Class A, stick to state and U.S. highways rather than narrow county roads where some rural railroad crossings have lower clearances.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhat amenities do campgrounds near Vernon, FL offer for RVs?
Campgrounds near Vernon are well set up for RVs of every size. Holmes Creek Camping and RV Resort, Hitchin Post Corral, and Sunset King Lake RV Resort offer full hookups with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, and many sites include cable TV and Wi-Fi. Dump stations are standard at private parks and at Falling Waters State Park, which also has potable water fills near the entrance. Bathhouses, laundry, and propane refills are easy to find within a short drive of town. Pro tip: if you're boondocking or staying somewhere without sewer, Falling Waters State Park has a public dump station, and most private parks will let you dump for a small fee even if you're not staying overnight.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/falling-waters-state-parkWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Vernon, FL?
Vernon RV rentals come fully equipped for a comfortable Panhandle adventure. Expect real beds (queen or king in most Class A and Class C rigs), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential for Florida humidity), heat, and seatbelts for every traveler. Many listings also include a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot, generator, outdoor speakers, and patio chairs. Each listing's amenities tab on RVezy spells it out clearly. Pro tip: filter for RVs with a generator if you're heading to Falling Waters State Park or any site without 50-amp service, summer afternoons here easily hit 90+ degrees and you'll want the AC humming nonstop while you nap off a swim in Cypress Spring.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vernon,FloridaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect with an RV rental in Vernon, FL?
RVezy hosts in Vernon offer a flexible menu of add-ons to personalize your trip: linen and towel packages, kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayaks, generators, and even pre-stocked propane. Pickup is typically at the host's home or storage lot in or around Vernon, and many offer delivery to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are shown clearly on each listing, commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extras typically around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package and you can arrive at Holmes Creek Camping and RV Resort with just a duffel bag and groceries, your whole campsite ready to go.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Vernon,FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Vernon, FL?
Payment is simple and secure, everything happens through the RVezy platform, so there's no cash, no checks, and no awkward handoff with the host. You pay your rental total at the time of booking using a credit card, and a refundable security deposit (separate from your booking payment) is pre-authorized before pickup and released after the trip if there's no damage or extra fees. Keep your receipts for fuel and propane if your contract requires returning them filled. Pro tip: do a thorough video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, photograph the exterior, interior, and tank levels, and you'll sail through deposit release within a few days of finishing your RV rental in Vernon, FL.
