Campgrounds near Ailey, Georgia
Ailey sits in Montgomery County in south-central Georgia, roughly three hours from Atlanta and about ninety minutes inland from Savannah. The area is flat, wooded pine and oak country crossed by the Ocmulgee, Oconee, and Ohoopee rivers, which shape most of the region's camping and paddling options. Nearby towns include McRae-Helena, Vidalia, Lyons, and Alamo, so groceries, fuel, and RV parts are close at hand.
RV travelers have a mix of state-park camping and small private parks to choose from. Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge, about fifteen minutes southwest, has 54 single-family campsites with hookups next to a 265-acre lake, plus a fire ring, table, and grate at every site. Closer to town, Runway Retreat RV Resort, Hidden Forest RV Club, and JB's RV Park serve travelers who want simpler full-hookup stays, while Ohoopee River Campground in Lyons offers full RV hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-through sites, showers, laundry, and a general store along the Ohoopee River.
The mix suits families, snowbirds, and paddlers who want river access without leaving big-rig-friendly infrastructure behind.
Things to do near Ailey
Water and golf dominate the local calendar. Little Ocmulgee State Park covers 1,360 acres with boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, tennis, volleyball, and picnicking. Its 200-foot beach along Little Ocmulgee Lake typically opens in late May and closes in early September, and a splash pad and pool cover the hotter months for kids. Golfers head to the Wallace Adams course inside the park.
Paddlers can put in on the Ohoopee, a blackwater river known for white sandbars and cypress swamp. Ohoopee River Campground offers day passes and kayak and canoe rentals for guests and drop-ins.
Wildlife watchers should keep an eye out for two protected species that live in the area: the eastern indigo snake and the gopher tortoise, Georgia's state reptile. Vidalia, roughly twenty minutes east, hosts the annual Vidalia Onion Festival each spring.

Winter camping at Little Ocmulgee State Park is comfortable, with towering trees veiled in Spanish moss framing both tent and RV sites. Winter and early spring are prime for exploring transitions between river bottomland, sand hill, oak, and bay forests. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in March and April, and paddling water levels on the Ohoopee are usually best from late winter through spring.
Summer is hot, humid, and buggy. Heat indices routinely push past 100, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Bug spray or a mosquito net is recommended in the summer months. The state-park beach and splash pad open in late May and close after early September, which drives peak family bookings.
Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and steadier weather. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and can affect southeast Georgia, so travelers arriving in September or October should track tropical forecasts before locking in a route.
