RV camping near Folkston, Georgia
Folkston sits at the east entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, a roughly 402,000-acre refuge spanning Charlton, Ware, and Clinch counties in Georgia plus Baker County in Florida. The town is the closest full-service base for RV travelers heading into the refuge, and it sits about an hour north of Jacksonville, Florida by way of US 1.
Private RV parks in and around town cover most trip styles. Okefenokee RV Park and Kelly's Countryside RV Park serve as straightforward drive-up bases with hookups. Okefenokee Pastimes Camping sits on 13 wooded acres with cabins, RV sites, and tent sites directly across from the refuge's main entrance. Callie's On The River and St Marys River Fish Camp and Campground put rigs on the water for paddling and fishing along the St. Marys River.
The refuge itself does not offer RV or drive-in camping on the Georgia entrance side. Overnight stays inside the wilderness are paddle-in only, so most families park the rig at a private campground in town and day-trip into the swamp.
Things to do near Folkston
The main draw is the Okefenokee refuge. From the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area entrance, visitors can walk the Chesser Island Boardwalk to an observation tower for a view over the swamp prairies, tour the restored Chesser Island Homestead, or drive the Swamp Island wildlife drive. The on-site concession Okefenokee Adventures runs guided boat tours and rents canoes and kayaks, which is the easiest way for first-time visitors to see alligators without booking an overnight permit.
Beyond the refuge, the St. Marys River corridor offers paddling and bank fishing, with Callie's On The River and St Marys River Fish Camp and Campground both putting in directly on the river. Train watchers head to the Folkston Funnel viewing platform in town to watch heavy CSX rail traffic pass through.

Spring is the headline season. From March into early May, migratory birds are active, alligators bask on canal banks, and wildflowers bloom across the prairies. This is also when the refuge tightens its backcountry rules: wilderness permits are available year-round, but during peak season in March and April, trips are limited to one and two nights, so paddle-camping demand is highest and private RV parks book up early.
Fall runs a close second. From late September through November, temperatures cool and humidity drops, and by mid-fall sandhill cranes begin arriving in the open wet prairies. Winter draws snowbird RVers for mild days, though alligator activity slows in cooler water.
Summer is hot, humid, and buggy, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The refuge sits in one of the most lightning-prone corridors in the country, so plan paddling for early morning and watch the forecast closely.

How to book campgrounds near Folkston
Private RV parks in the area, including Okefenokee RV Park, Kelly's Countryside RV Park, Okefenokee Pastimes Camping, Callie's On The River, and St Marys River Fish Camp and Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Spring weekends fill first, so book several weeks out for March and April stays.
Wilderness camping inside the Okefenokee refuge is handled separately. Online reservations are not offered. Trips must be booked by calling the Permit Reservation Line at 912-496-3331, Tuesday through Thursday, from 7:00 am to 10:00 am Eastern. Reservations can be made no more than two months in advance. Only canoes and kayaks are permitted on the platforms, so this is a supplement to, not a replacement for, an RV site in town.
What to expect
Expect a small-town base with quick access to a very large wilderness. Private parks around Folkston are practical rather than resort-style: level sites, full or partial hookups, laundry, and a camp store are typical. Okefenokee Pastimes Camping, for example, sits on 13 wooded acres and offers full-hookup RV sites, a bathhouse, laundry, camp store, stocked fishing pond, dog park, and shaded hiking trails, with dark night skies noted by many guests.
Inside the refuge, distances add up. The main entrance is several miles southwest of town, and cell service weakens near the swamp. Bring bug spray in every season except deep winter, carry drinking water on paddles, and keep a respectful distance from alligators sunning on canal banks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Folkston, GA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Folkston, GA?
An RV rental in Folkston is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Okefenokee Swamp. On RVezy, travel trailers near Folkston typically start around $90 to $130 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally run $150 to $250 per night, with campervans falling in between. Because Folkston sits outside the main tourist circuit, you'll often find better daily rates than in Savannah or Jacksonville. To score a cheap RV rental in Folkston, book midweek, target shoulder months like March or October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: pairing a towable trailer with delivery to Okefenokee Pastimes Campground saves you fuel and stress on your first night.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Folkston%2C%20GeorgiaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Folkston, Georgia?
Great news: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Folkston, Georgia. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) clearly exempts recreational vehicles from commercial driver's license (CDL) requirements when used for personal travel, so even larger motorhomes are covered by your standard license. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and we'll confirm your ID through the platform during checkout, no extra paperwork required. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home country's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is for an Okefenokee RV trip.
dds.georgia.gov/license-classesWhat protection is included with my RV rental in Folkston?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental on RVezy, including motorhome rentals in Folkston, comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right in. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you peace of mind whether you're parked beside the Suwannee Canal or driving GA-121 toward the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. At checkout, you choose your protection level (you decide, not the host), so you can match coverage to your comfort level. Lock in your tier, then go enjoy the gators worry-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Folkston RV rental?
Plans change, and booking an RV rental in Folkston is low risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out you cancel and any extraordinary circumstances like hurricanes or named tropical storms, which can affect southeast Georgia in late summer. You'll see the full policy details at checkout and in your trip dashboard. Pro tip: book early to secure your preferred RV for the Okefenokee Swamp's prime spring or fall season, knowing the cancellation policy has your back if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Okefenokee RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Folkston is easy to find. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs in their motorhomes and travel trailers. Folkston is a fantastic dog destination: Okefenokee Pastimes Campground has a dedicated on-site dog park (proof of rabies vaccination required), and pets are allowed on leash at the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area's land-based trails and boardwalks. One important heads-up specific to the Okefenokee: pets are not allowed in boats or canoes within the refuge, even your own, so plan a land-based activity (or a campsite hangout) for paddle days. Bring extra water; south Georgia humidity is no joke for pups.
fws.gov/refuge/okefenokee/visit-us/rules-policiesCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Folkston?
Yes, RV delivery in Folkston is one of the best ways to start your trip stress-free, especially for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV directly to Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins & Campground (right across from the refuge entrance on GA-121), Traders Hill Recreation Area along the St. Marys River, or even Stephen C. Foster State Park, level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, then message them with your destination to confirm the fee, which is usually based on round-trip mileage. It's the easiest way to enjoy an Okefenokee RV trip without ever towing a thing.
gastateparks.org/StephenCFosterHow far can I drive on a Folkston RV trip?
You've got incredible range from Folkston. Popular road trip destinations include Jacksonville, Florida (about 40 miles south), Cumberland Island National Seashore via St. Marys (35 miles east), Jekyll Island and the Golden Isles (about 65 miles north), Savannah (130 miles northeast), and Stephen C. Foster State Park on the west side of the Okefenokee (90 miles by road since you have to drive around the swamp). Mileage policies vary by host, but many on RVezy offer generous daily allowances and some offer unlimited mileage for longer trips. If you're planning a multi-stop RV road trip from Folkston, message the host before booking and ask about a custom mileage package, most are happy to work with you.
nps.gov/cuis/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Folkston for RV camping?
Folkston punches well above its weight for RV camping. Top picks include Okefenokee Pastimes Cabins & Campground, a Good Sam park on wooded acreage directly across from the refuge's main entrance with full-hookup pull-throughs that accommodate large rigs; Stephen C. Foster State Park, the remote west-side gateway near Fargo with electric and water sites under designated dark skies; Traders Hill Recreation Area, a Charlton County campground along the St. Marys River with shaded, woodsy sites; and Laura S. Walker State Park about 35 miles north near Waycross. Pro tip: Stephen C. Foster has limited cell service and the nearest gas station is around 20 miles away, so fuel up and download maps in Folkston before heading out.
gastateparks.org/StephenCFosterWhen is the best time of year to visit Folkston in an RV?
The sweet spot for an RV camping Folkston trip is late October through early April. Winters here are mild (average highs 61 to 67°F in December through February, lows in the mid 40s), mosquitoes are minimal, and alligator viewing is excellent on sunny days when gators bask on the banks. March and early April bring blooming wildflowers and pleasant 70 to 80°F days. Summer (June through September) is hot and humid with highs in the low 90s, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and serious bug pressure, plus it's peak Atlantic hurricane season. Local insider tip: aim for the new moon during winter for unreal stargazing at Okefenokee Pastimes, which sits under some of the darkest skies on the East Coast.
weather.gov/jax/I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I be okay driving around Folkston?
You're going to do great, Folkston is one of the easiest places in Georgia to learn. Roads around town are wide, flat, lightly trafficked, and the main routes to the Okefenokee (GA-121/23 south to the refuge and GA-40 east to St. Marys) are straight rural highways with generous shoulders. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering the propane, water, electrical, slide-outs, and dump procedures, so you won't be guessing. If city driving worries you, just request delivery and skip it entirely. Pro tip for first time renting an RV: practice a few right turns in a Folkston grocery store parking lot before heading to your campground, you'll feel confident within 15 minutes.
dot.ga.gov/DS/TravelWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on GA-121, a dead battery at Stephen C. Foster State Park, or a tow off US-1 is just a phone call away. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for help troubleshooting small issues like a tripped breaker or finicky water pump, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell service is spotty deep inside the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, so save the roadside assistance number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave Folkston.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Folkston RV rental across state lines into Florida?
Yes, and it's one of the best things about renting here. Folkston sits just 4 miles from the Florida border, so an RV road trip from Folkston naturally flows into Amelia Island, Jacksonville, or even further south to St. Augustine (90 miles). Cross-state travel within the U.S. is covered by your RVezy protection package, no special steps required. The one hard rule: travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. If you're planning to cross into multiple states, just let your host know in your booking message so they can flag any host-specific mileage considerations. Easy add-on idea: a Cumberland Island ferry day trip from St. Marys, only 35 minutes from Folkston.
nps.gov/cuis/planyourvisit/fees.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Folkston RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to plan for here. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers towed by a pickup get 10 to 14 MPG combined, and campervans can hit 15 to 20 MPG. With Georgia gas prices typically running below the national average, a long weekend doing Folkston, Cumberland Island, and Jekyll Island (under 200 miles total) usually costs $60 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Folkston or Kingsland before heading west to Stephen C. Foster State Park, the nearest gas station to that park is roughly 20 miles away in Fargo, and prices in tiny rural towns can spike. Diesel pumps are available at the Pilot/Flying J off I-95 exit 3.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Folkston?
For an Okefenokee RV trip, the earlier the better, especially for Stephen C. Foster State Park, which fills up months ahead for weekends from October through April. Georgia State Park campsites are reservable up to 13 months in advance through ReserveAmerica or by calling 1-800-864-7275, and the popular sites near the bathhouse go fastest. Okefenokee Pastimes books directly through its website with more weekday availability, while Traders Hill takes reservations through Charlton County. Pro tip: if Stephen C. Foster is full, set a cancellation alert, openings happen often within two weeks of arrival. Book your RVezy rental first, then your campsite, so you know the RV length you're securing.
gastateparks.org/StephenCFosterWhat driving conditions should I expect around Folkston?
Driving conditions around Folkston are about as RV-friendly as Georgia gets: flat coastal plain terrain, no mountains, no tunnels, and almost no traffic. The roads to watch are narrow rural two-lanes like GA-94 and GA-177 (the dead-end road into Stephen C. Foster State Park) where overhanging cypress branches can scrape tall Class A roofs, so confirm your RV's height with your host. Watch for active CSX rail crossings in downtown Folkston (the famous Folkston Funnel), deer at dawn and dusk, and pop-up summer thunderstorms with heavy rain. Pro tip: avoid driving the swamp roads after dark, alligators do occasionally cross GA-121 near the refuge, and your headlights won't give you much reaction time.
511ga.org/What amenities will I find at Folkston-area campgrounds?
Folkston campgrounds cover the full spectrum. Okefenokee Pastimes offers full hookups (30-amp electric, water, sewer), a bathhouse, on-site laundry ($3/load), a camp store, restaurant, dog park, and reliable WiFi. Stephen C. Foster State Park has water and electric sites (no sewer at site, but there's an on-site dump station) plus showers and a Trading Post, though no cell service or campsite WiFi by design, it's a designated International Dark Sky Park. Traders Hill is more primitive with basic hookups and river access. Public dump stations and potable water fills are available at Stephen C. Foster and Laura S. Walker State Parks. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Folkston before heading anywhere remote, and use the dump on your way out, not your way in.
gastateparks.org/StephenCFosterWhat's included inside the RV I rent in Folkston?
Most motorhome and travel trailer rentals near Folkston come fully equipped for plug-and-play camping: a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (a must in south Georgia), furnace, and a 12V/110V electrical system. Larger Class C and Class A models typically add a TV, generator for boondocking, awning, and outdoor speakers. Seatbelts are provided for the rated sleep/seat count, which you'll see clearly on every RVezy listing. WiFi varies, and some hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: filter by amenities on RVezy to match the exact features you need for your Okefenokee trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Folkston%2C%20GeorgiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Folkston commonly offer a range of add-ons that make life easier: linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), generator use ($15 to $30/day), bike racks, kayaks (perfect for the Okefenokee's 120+ miles of water trails), camp chairs, fire pits, and pet cleaning fees ($25 to $50). Mileage policies vary, some include 100 free miles per day, others offer unlimited mileage packages, all clearly listed on the listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Folkston, with delivery available for an extra fee. Pro tip: ask about a propane top-off and a generator add-on if you're heading to Stephen C. Foster State Park, where some loops have water but limited electric service.
fws.gov/refuge/okefenokee/visit-us/activitiesHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Georgia is handled entirely through RVezy, no cash, no Venmo, no awkward driveway exchanges. You pay securely through the platform when you book, with a portion typically charged at booking and the balance before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup; the exact amount is shown on the listing and is released back to you after the trip, assuming no damage or policy violations. To avoid any deposit issues, do the pre-trip walkthrough with your host, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, empty the tanks at a dump station, and stay within the agreed mileage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I beat the heat and bugs on a summer Folkston RV trip?
Summer in the Okefenokee is wild and beautiful, you just need a plan. Daytime highs hit 90 to 95°F with high humidity, so book an RV with strong roof air conditioning (most RVezy listings note BTU output), choose a shaded campsite (Okefenokee Pastimes is famous for its tree canopy), and run the AC on shore power rather than draining the generator. Schedule paddling and wildlife drives for the first two hours after sunrise, when gators are active and temperatures are 15 degrees cooler. Pack EPA-registered insect repellent, long sleeves at dusk, and a ThermaCELL for hanging out at the picnic table. Local insider tip: the swamp's biting yellow flies peak in May and June, late summer mosquitoes are actually milder.
