Kings Bay Base camping overview
Kings Bay Base sits in Camden County on the southeast Georgia coast, minutes from St. Marys and the Florida state line. The area is a practical staging point for RV travelers heading to Cumberland Island, the Golden Isles, Amelia Island, and the Okefenokee region. Interstate 95 runs directly through the county, so most campgrounds are within a short drive of Exit 1 or Exit 3.
RV options range from full-service commercial parks to a coastal state park. Crooked River State Park offers hookup sites and cottages along a tidal river, while Jacksonville N/St. Marys KOA Holiday, A Big Wheel RV Park, Huck's RV Park, and Country Oaks Campground and RV Park cover the private-park side with pull-throughs, laundry, and Wi-Fi.
Most travelers use these campgrounds as a base for day trips: ferry rides to Cumberland Island, waterfront meals in historic St. Marys, and drives north to Jekyll Island or south into Jacksonville.
Things to do near Kings Bay Base
The main draw is Cumberland Island National Seashore, reached by passenger ferry from the St. Marys waterfront. Day visitors and backcountry campers walk undeveloped beaches, spot wild horses, and tour the Dungeness ruins. Ferry tickets are booked through the National Park Service concessioner at cumberlandislandferry.com, while any island camping permit is handled separately on Recreation.gov.
On the mainland, Crooked River State Park offers a boat ramp, a nature center, salt-marsh trails, and access to the Intracoastal Waterway. Anglers fish for redfish and trout from the ramp or from kayaks. Families often add a stop at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to the west, or head south into Amelia Island for beaches and Fort Clinch State Park.

Coastal Camden County has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, wet summers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with lower humidity, fewer bugs, and steady access to the Cumberland Island ferry. Wildflowers, migratory birds along the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, and calm marsh conditions make March through May a strong window.
Summer brings long days, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak heat and humidity. Family bookings surge around school breaks and holiday weekends, and popular sites at Crooked River State Park can fill many months in advance. Biting insects, including sand gnats and mosquitoes, are heaviest from June through September, especially near marshes.
Late summer through October is peak Atlantic hurricane season. Cumberland Island has closed to overnight camping after past storms, and mainland parks may lose services temporarily. Winter is the quietest season, cool but generally mild, and works well for snowbirds routing along I-95.
