Campgrounds and RV parks near Ray City, GA

Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area is the signature nature stop in the area. The site covers thousands of acres of cypress and gum wetlands plus upland pine forest, with a boardwalk, observation tower, and a wetland education center on the state-managed tract. Hunting, wildlife watching, and paddling are the main draws, and access can close during managed firearms hunts or military training on the adjacent federal tract. Families typically build a day around Wild Adventures Theme Park south of Valdosta, which combines rides, animal exhibits, and Splash Island Waterpark on one property. Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge offers kayaking and fishing in a cypress-lined lake, and Reed Bingham State Park adds boating and fishing on a 375-acre lake, with canoe and kayak rentals available on site.

South Georgia has a humid subtropical climate. Summers from June through August are hot, humid, and wet, with afternoon thunderstorms common and heat indexes that regularly push past 100. This is the peak season for Wild Adventures and the waterpark, but campground shade and 50-amp service for air conditioning matter more than in cooler months. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel. March through May brings warm days, moderate humidity, and blooming azaleas, with Valdosta's Azalea Festival a spring highlight. November is typically the driest month of the year, and October and November pair well with hiking at Grand Bay or Reed Bingham. Winters are mild but variable. Daytime highs are often in the 60s, though nights can drop near freezing and cold snaps do occur. Snowbirds moving between Florida and northern states heavily use area RV parks from December through February, so booking ahead is wise even in the off-season. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and can trigger park closures; Reed Bingham was impacted by Hurricane Helene and, while the park is open and most trails have reopened, damaged boardwalk sections remain closed as repairs continue.

Sites at nearby private parks are typically pull-through or back-in with full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and 30/50-amp service. Rigs on I-75 layovers should confirm site length and low-branch clearance when booking, since older parks in the region have mature oaks and pines. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-75 corridor and thinner on WMA lands. At Reed Bingham State Park, the campground splits into two loops, with Loop 1 providing water and electric hookups while Loop 2 adds sewer connections with 50-amp service, a dump station is available on-site, and nearly all sites are pull-through, a practical advantage for larger rigs. Plan for humidity, mosquitoes, and biting flies from late spring through early fall. American alligators are often seen sunning along the lake's edge, so keep pets leashed near shorelines and on boardwalks.
