Campgrounds and RV parks near Smithville, GA

The signature day trip is Andersonville National Historic Site, about 20 minutes north. The site comprises the National Prisoner of War Museum, the former Camp Sumter military prison site, and Andersonville National Cemetery, with park grounds open daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the museum open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no fee to enter, and a self-guided audio driving tour circles the prison grounds. Lake Blackshear anchors outdoor recreation to the east. The 8,600 acre lake is used by boaters, jet skiers, water skiers, fishermen, and swimmers, with watercraft rentals available at the Georgia Veterans State Park Marina. The park also features a military museum with indoor exhibits and outdoor static displays including a B-29 Superfortress, jets, a helicopter, tanks, and artillery. The SAM Shortline excursion train runs from Georgia Veterans State Park to Plains, Jimmy Carter's hometown, with additional stops in Americus and Leslie. Downtown Americus offers the historic Windsor Hotel and Habitat for Humanity's Global Village.

Southwest Georgia has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel in the Smithville area: comfortable daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and manageable insect pressure. Wildflowers and dogwoods bloom from mid-March through April. Summer runs hot and sticky. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and campers at Lake Blackshear sometimes contend with gnats and mosquitoes. Reviewers of Georgia Veterans State Park note gnats during summer months and mention that some sites lack sewer hookups. Book shaded or lakefront sites early for summer weekends. Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August and September and can push tropical moisture inland, occasionally forcing park closures. Winter is the quietest local season but also the busiest for private RV parks catering to snowbirds. Frost is possible on clear December and January nights, though hard freezes are brief. Long-term sites in Americus and Albany fill up from November through February as travelers pause on the run between Florida and points north.

Georgia Veterans State Park is a site-specific campground, so the exact numbered site is assigned at booking. Check-in is between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m., and check-out is before noon. Bring a park map, since signage between the resort side and the campground side can be confusing after dark. Waterfront campgrounds 1 and 2 have smaller sites near a playground, while campground 3 sits back in the trees with more privacy. At Americus KOA Journey, expect a rural setting with long pull-throughs and a park host who typically greets arrivals. After hours, a night registration board directs late arrivals to their site. Cell service is generally reliable on major carriers throughout Lee and Sumter counties. Groceries, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Americus or Albany.
