Campgrounds and RV parks near Kahaluu-Keauhou, HI

Kahaluu Beach Park is the anchor attraction, known for calm, shallow water and reliable green sea turtle sightings. Snorkeling, stand-up paddling, and shore fishing are the main daytime activities, and reef gear rentals are available a short walk from the sand. Day trips fan out in both directions. To the south, Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook Monument draw kayakers and snorkelers, and the historic Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park sits within a short drive. North of Kailua-Kona, Kohala Coast beaches and the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park add more shoreline stops. Inland routes climb quickly. Coffee farm tours line the Mamalahoa Highway through Holualoa and Kealakekua, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is roughly a two-hour drive southeast, with active-volcano viewing, lava-tube walks, and long summit and coastal hikes.

The Kona coast is one of the drier, most consistent parts of the Hawaiian Islands, with temperatures holding between roughly 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. There is no true off-season for weather, but demand and rainfall patterns shape trip planning. Kona is unusual in Hawaii because summer tends to be wetter than winter along this leeward coast, with September often the wettest month. Winter is generally the sunniest and driest season at the shoreline, though larger North Pacific swells can close some snorkeling spots and stir low-lying beach sites. Winter is also peak booking season for accommodations, driven by mainland holiday travel and whale watching, with humpbacks typically visible offshore from December through April. Hurricane season officially runs June through November across the Central Pacific, and campers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories, since tropical systems can force park closures. Shoulder months in April, May, and October generally offer the best mix of open sites, lower crowds, and stable weather.

Infrastructure is limited compared with mainland RV parks. Many county and state sites offer only cold-water showers, vault or flush toilets, and picnic pavilions, and several coastal sites have no potable water at all. Bring drinking water, a full propane tank, and shade, since exposed lava-coast sites heat up quickly. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Kona corridor from Kailua-Kona through Kahaluu-Keauhou and Captain Cook, but drops off inside Volcanoes National Park and along the South Point access road. Roads to some campgrounds are narrow and rough; check length and clearance restrictions before committing a large RV. Respect the resource. Nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose, is protected in the national park, and pets are banned at Kulanaokuaiki for that reason. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by state law, and camping outside designated sites is prohibited islandwide.
