The Kohala Coast is built around ocean access. Hāpuna Beach is the main draw, with swimming during calm seas, bodysurfing during shore breaks, sunbathing, picnicking, and shelter lodging. Snorkeling is a regular activity along the resort coast, and lifeguard services are provided at Hāpuna. Hiking is available along the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, a coastal route that connects several beach parks in the area. Families also use the resort area as a base for day trips to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to the south and the Waipio Valley Lookout to the north. Ocean safety is a real factor. Rip currents and pounding shore breaks occur during periods of high surf, and waves over 3 feet high are for experts, with all others advised to stay out of the water and away from the shoreline.

Waikoloa Beach Resort is one of the driest spots in Hawaii. Rain here is very rare, with less than one inch falling nine months per year and a total annual amount of only about 9 inches, compared to about 27 inches in Kona and 141 inches in Hilo. Temperatures stay warm year-round with little seasonal swing. Winter, roughly December through March, brings the highest surf to Kohala Coast beaches and the greatest chance of the area's few rain events. It is also the busiest visitor season, with resort demand peaking around the winter holidays and again during spring break weeks. Whale-watching offshore is a common winter draw. Summer and early fall are the driest, sunniest months and generally the calmest for ocean activities on the leeward side. Central Pacific hurricane season runs June through November, and while direct hits on the Big Island are rare, passing storms can affect surf, wind, and park access. Every legal campsite on the Big Island requires a permit, there is no free camping in any county or state park, and permits cannot be purchased at the parks themselves, so timing bookings around the season matters.

Expect a resort-adjacent camping experience rather than a wilderness one. The Kohala Coast is developed, and campgrounds sit close to hotels, shops, and paved highways. Cell coverage is generally reliable along Highway 19 and thins out on side roads. Infrastructure is limited compared to mainland RV parks. At Hāpuna, for example, shelters share hot water showers and flush toilets, and comfort stations are assigned to specific shelter groups. Full hookups for larger RVs are uncommon in the region, and many public sites cater to tents or basic shelter units only. Bring sun protection, water, and reef-safe sunscreen. The lava landscape offers little natural shade, temperatures climb quickly after mid-morning, and winds along the coast can be strong in the afternoons. Store food securely, as small wildlife is present at most sites.
