Campgrounds near Tyhee, Idaho
Tyhee is an unincorporated community in Bannock County, just northwest of Pocatello on the Snake River plain. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring the Portneuf Canyon area, the American Falls Reservoir shoreline, and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest to the east. Pocatello sits at roughly 4,500 feet elevation, with mountains rising abruptly above 9,000 feet within 15 miles to the east.
Campground options in the area range from full-service commercial parks to reservoir-side recreation sites. Pocatello KOA Journey and Batiste Springs RV Park are the closest developed RV parks and offer standard hookups and pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs. Willow Bay Recreation Area sits on the American Falls Reservoir shoreline about 25 minutes from Pocatello, with full-hookup sites and lake access.
For a resort-style stay, Indian Springs Resort and RV in American Falls features a large hot-spring-fed pool and grassy sites. Lost Trail - Motel, RV Park, and Campground offers a more rustic option with dry and full-hookup sites plus a cafe and camp store.
Things to do near Tyhee
The American Falls Reservoir is the region's dominant recreation feature, drawing boaters, water-skiers, anglers, and birders along its long Snake River shoreline. Willow Bay Recreation Area provides a boat ramp, public beach, and a paved bike path that runs from The Bay Cafe through adjoining wetlands.
Families staying at Indian Springs Resort and RV can use the natural-spring-fed pool, which is maintained around 90 degrees Fahrenheit and open seasonally alongside horseshoes, volleyball, and picnic pavilions. Nearby, Massacre Rocks State Park preserves Oregon Trail history and Register Rock.
Pocatello itself, roughly 15 minutes south, offers full grocery and outdoor-gear resupply, plus mountain biking, hiking, and disc golf in city parks. The Caribou-Targhee National Forest and the Portneuf Range provide day-trip access to hiking, ATV trails, and rock climbing.

Pocatello has a semi-arid, high-desert climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers. The prime RV season runs from late May through mid-September, when overnight lows generally stay above freezing and daytime highs sit in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit. May is the wettest month of the year, with spring rain feeding wildflowers on the surrounding foothills, while July is typically the driest.
Many commercial parks operate on a seasonal schedule. Indian Springs Resort and RV, for example, opens from roughly mid-May through late September, with the hot-spring pool running through the summer. Willow Bay Recreation Area is generally accessible spring through fall, and short-term sites there are often bookable close to arrival.
Winter camping is limited. Snow typically begins in October and continues into April, with January averaging around eight inches of snowfall. Year-round RV options are usually restricted to commercial parks with heated utility service, and Willow Bay Recreation Area offers long-term monthly hookups through the winter.
How to book campgrounds near Tyhee
Most of the closest options to Tyhee are privately operated and booked directly. Pocatello KOA Journey uses the KOA reservation system, available through the KOA website, app, or phone. Batiste Springs RV Park, Indian Springs Resort and RV, and Lost Trail - Motel, RV Park, and Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their websites, with third-party aggregators such as RoverPass listing availability for some properties.
Short-term RV stays at Willow Bay are handled through Willow Bay Resort, which manages the marina and campground on the American Falls Reservoir shoreline. For summer weekends and holidays, book six to eight weeks ahead. For nearby National Forest and BLM sites in the Caribou-Targhee, reservations go through Recreation.gov, typically on a six-month rolling window.
What to expect
Sites near Tyhee are generally spacious by RV-park standards, with grassy pads, mature trees, and long pull-throughs common at both Willow Bay and Indian Springs. Full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service are standard at the developed parks, and dump stations, showers, and coin laundry are widely available.
Cell coverage is reliable across most of the Pocatello area, and both Verizon and AT&T have been reported to work at Willow Bay by recent guests. Interstate 15 and Interstate 86 pass close by, so brief road noise is possible at some parks. Rail lines along the reservoir also produce occasional train noise.
Wildlife is part of the experience. Moose, coyotes, waterfowl, and raptors are regularly seen in the wetlands around American Falls Reservoir, so secure food and give animals space.

fs.usda.gov/recarea/ctnf/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=71993When is the best time to visit Tyhee in an RV?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Tyhee, with daytime highs from the mid-70s to upper 80s°F and cool, comfortable nights in the 40s and 50s°F. June and September are local favorites: wildflowers in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, fewer crowds, and easier campsite bookings. July and August bring peak warmth (occasional 90s) and ideal weather for Lava Hot Springs tubing or hiking at Scout Mountain. Winter visits are absolutely doable for adventure-minded travelers, just pick a four-season RV with heated holding tanks. Pro tip: shoulder-season weekday trips can shave 20 to 30 percent off your Tyhee RV rental compared to peak July rates.
weather.gov/pih/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting in Tyhee?
You'll be in great hands. First time renting an RV in Tyhee is genuinely easy because every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and the dump station. The roads around Tyhee are wide, flat, and gentle, so you can build confidence on local routes like Hiline Road and Tyhee Road before merging onto I-15. Start small with a Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Tyhee if you want easier handling, and consider delivery so you skip driving on day one entirely. Pro tip: do a parking-lot practice loop near the old Tyhee schoolhouse area before tackling your first campground.
itd.idaho.gov/safety/What happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire near Tyhee?
You're never stranded. Every RV rental in Tyhee booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on I-15 outside Chubbuck or deep in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Roadside covers things like tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their rig. Idaho 511 (dial 511 or visit the ITD site) gives you real-time alerts on closures along I-15 and US-91, which is handy if you're traveling through winter storms or summer wildfire smoke.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Tyhee RV rental into Yellowstone, Utah, or across borders?
Yes, interstate road trips from Tyhee are one of the best parts of renting here. Most hosts happily allow travel throughout the lower 48, so you can plan an RV road trip from Tyhee to Yellowstone (3.5 hours), Grand Teton (3 hours), Craters of the Moon National Monument (2 hours), or Salt Lake City (2.5 hours). Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper insurance, just message them before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: confirm your route in the booking message so your host can flag any mileage or one-way considerations upfront.
nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/rvcamping.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Tyhee RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable costs. Idaho gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and most motorhomes in this size class get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, while travel trailers towed by a truck average 10 to 14 MPG. For a weekend RV road trip from Tyhee to Yellowstone and back (about 400 miles), budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Top off in Pocatello or Chubbuck where prices are usually cheapest, gas stations get noticeably pricier as you head toward West Yellowstone. Pro tip: GasBuddy and the AAA Fuel Cost Calculator both work great for tightening your trip budget before you book.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Tyhee?
For peak summer dates, aim to lock in campsites 3 to 6 months ahead, especially if you're heading toward Yellowstone or Grand Teton from your Tyhee RV rental. Reservations for federal sites like Scout Mountain and Mink Creek open on Recreation.gov on a rolling 6-month window, while Idaho State Parks like Massacre Rocks (45 minutes west) book through ReserveAmerica's Idaho portal up to 9 months out. For private parks like Pocatello KOA and Cowboy RV Park, you can usually book directly on their websites with 1 to 2 weeks of lead time outside peak holidays. Pro tip: Sunday-to-Thursday stays often have last-minute openings even in July.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Tyhee?
Driving an RV around Tyhee is refreshingly relaxed. The area sits in the flat Portneuf Valley at about 4,500 feet, with wide rural roads like Tyhee Road and Hiline Road that are easy to maneuver. I-15 and I-86 run nearby with generous lanes, perfect for first-time motorhome drivers. Watch for crosswinds in open stretches between Pocatello and American Falls, and plan winter trips (November to March) with snow tires and chains since storms can close passes on US-30 toward Lava Hot Springs. Wildlife (deer, moose) is most active at dawn and dusk near the foothills. Check Idaho 511 before you roll for real-time road conditions.
511.idaho.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Tyhee?
You'll find a great mix. Private parks like Pocatello KOA Journey and Cowboy RV Park offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), WiFi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations right on-site, so you can roll in and plug in. National Forest campgrounds in the Caribou-Targhee like Scout Mountain and Big Springs typically have potable water spigots, vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables, but no hookups, perfect if your rig has a generator and full tanks. Need to dump or refill water mid-trip? The Pocatello KOA and the Flying J at Exit 71 both offer dump access. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading into Mink Creek, the closest fill is back in Pocatello.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/ctnf/recarea/?recid=71991What's included inside a typical Tyhee RV rental?
You'll find everything you need to camp comfortably. Most RV rentals in Tyhee come fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, climate control (furnace and AC), and house batteries for boondocking. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically include a generator, awning, and outdoor speakers, while campervan rentals in Tyhee favor a more minimalist layout. WiFi and TVs vary by listing, so just check the amenities list. Pro tip: many local hosts toss in bedding, kitchen kits, and camp chairs for free, look for those notes on the listing to skip a Walmart run.
nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/rvcamping.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a Tyhee RV rental?
You can customize easily. Popular add-ons for RV rentals in Tyhee include generator use ($3 to $5/hour), kitchen kits ($25 to $50/trip), bedding packages ($15 to $30/person), bike racks, camp chairs, portable grills, and pet cleaning fees if applicable. Hosts also set their own pickup and drop-off windows, usually a 1 to 2 hour window each way at their home base in Tyhee, Chubbuck, or Pocatello. Need flexibility? Filter for Delivery on RVezy so the rig comes to your campground or vacation rental. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a kitchen kit often costs less than driving to pickup and shopping, especially if you're flying into Pocatello Regional Airport.
visitpocatello.com/How does the security deposit and payment work for my Tyhee RV rental?
Payment is simple and transparent. When you book an RV rental in Tyhee on RVezy, you pay securely through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card a few days before pickup and released after a clean return with no damage or policy issues. To avoid surprises, do a quick walkaround video at pickup with your host, follow the mileage and generator-use policies on the listing, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane level.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Tyhee during winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Tyhee is absolutely possible and increasingly popular for snow lovers heading to Pebble Creek Ski Area (just 20 minutes south) or hot-springs trips to Lava Hot Springs. Look for four-season rigs on RVezy that include heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and dual-pane windows, and use shore power at parks like Cowboy RV Park or Pocatello KOA, which stay open year-round. Daytime highs in January typically run 25 to 35°F with nights in the teens, so plan to use the furnace generously and keep the fresh water tank topped. Pro tip: message hosts about winterization status, some will swap to ski-trip-ready setups on request.
