Shoshone Falls drops 212 feet, making it 45 feet taller than Niagara Falls, and it is the headline stop on the Snake River just north of town. Centennial Waterfront Park sits at river level below the Perrine Bridge and offers paddleboarding, kayak rentals, hiking, and views of BASE jumpers launching from the bridge deck. Families can add the Herrett Center for Arts and Science on the College of Southern Idaho campus and local farm stands with pick-your-own produce in season. Anglers head to the Snake River and to reservoirs east and south of town for trout. For a longer day trip, Craters of the Moon National Monument lies north via US-93 and US-26, and the South Hills unit of Sawtooth National Forest opens up hiking, mountain biking, and, in winter, snowmobiling and skiing at Magic Mountain.

The region has a cold semi-arid climate marked by very low annual precipitation and very large seasonal temperature contrasts, with warm dry summers and cold winters that receive more moisture.
