Campgrounds and RV parks near South Jordan, UT

The Wasatch canyons east of the valley offer hiking, mountain biking, and, in winter, skiing at Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, and Brighton. Closer to South Jordan, families use paved trails along the Jordan River Parkway and the Bingham Creek Regional Park for easy rides and playground stops. Flight Park State Recreation Area is jointly managed by Utah State Parks and the Utah Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, and is recognized as one of the best training sites in the world for both paragliding and hang gliding, so watching launches from Point of the Mountain is a common half-day outing. On the lake side, Antelope Island offers backcountry trails with lake views, sandy beaches at Bridger Bay, the historic Fielding Garr Ranch, and free-ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and pronghorn, reachable via the Syracuse causeway.

Fire restrictions are common in dry months, and Stage 2 restrictions may prohibit open fires, charcoal, and pellet grills, while properly shielded gas or liquid-fueled camp stoves with a shut-off valve typically remain allowed. Winter shifts the focus to skiing. Many state park campgrounds run reduced services, and canyon routes may require chains or four-wheel drive during storms. Low water levels on the Great Salt Lake have periodically affected boat access, so boaters should check current conditions before towing.

Elevation in the Salt Lake Valley runs near 4,200 to 4,500 feet, so expect cool nights even in summer and stronger sun exposure. Rigs coming from lower elevations may notice reduced engine performance on canyon grades and mountain passes east of the city. Hookup levels vary. At Great Salt Lake Park, four RV sites offer water and electrical hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, one site provides full hookups including sewer, and primitive beach tent sites are walk-in only with fire pits. At Antelope Island's Bridger Bay Campground, the lower loop has no hookups while the upper loop offers water and electric, with flush restrooms and showers available in both loops and a dump station on site. Biting gnats near the lake shoreline can be heavy from April to June, so pack repellent. Cell service is reliable throughout the valley but drops in canyon terrain.
