RV camping near Alexis, Illinois
Alexis sits in Warren County in western Illinois, within easy reach of the Mississippi River corridor and the Quad Cities metro to the north. The village is a practical base for RV travelers who want a mix of private-resort amenities and public land camping along the river.
Private options close to town include Shady Lakes RV Resort in nearby New Windsor, a gated property with full-hookup RV sites arranged around on-site ponds and fishing lakes. Haven Hills Campground & Resort provides another family-focused private option in the area. About 45 minutes north, Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday offers full hookups, cabins, a heated pool, and planned weekend activities on 150-plus acres that include a 50-acre fishing lake.
For state-managed camping, Delabar State Park sits along the Mississippi River just north of Oquawka, and Big River State Forest covers roughly 2,900 acres of pine plantation and river bottom to the south. Both offer quieter, more rustic experiences than the private resorts.
Things to do near Alexis
Water access defines most trips in this area. Delabar State Park has a boat ramp on the south end providing access to the Mississippi River, where anglers target channel catfish, bass, bluegill, and crappie. Big River State Forest adds hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing across a remnant of prairie woodland, and the 1.5-mile Lincoln Hiking Trail commemorates Abraham Lincoln's 1832 march through the area.
Families with kids often base at Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday for the heated outdoor pool, water spray park, mini golf, paddleboats, and Jump Pad. Day trips into the Quad Cities open up the Rock Island Arsenal, Niabi Zoo, the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, and the Quad City Botanical Center.

July and August are the warmest months, with an average of roughly a dozen days per year above 90°F at the nearby Monmouth station. Book private resorts and the KOA well ahead for holiday weekends.
Spring and fall trade heat for cooler nights and lighter crowds. Shoulder-season temperatures suit hiking at Big River State Forest and Delabar State Park, and fall color along the Mississippi bluffs typically peaks in mid to late October. Spring rains are frequent, so expect muddy trails and check river levels before booking a riverside site.
Winter is quiet. Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday stays open all year, while Delabar State Park and many private resorts including Shady Lakes RV Resort operate on a seasonal schedule roughly April through October.
How to book campgrounds near Alexis
Illinois state sites use different reservation channels than private parks. For Delabar State Park and Big River State Forest, campers must obtain a permit from the park office before setting up, and groups of 25 or more need advance permission from the site manager. Contact the site directly for current reservation procedures and availability.
Private parks book online through their own websites or major reservation platforms. Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday takes reservations through the KOA system, with cancellation windows that vary by site type and length of stay. Shady Lakes RV Resort and Haven Hills Campground & Resort take bookings by phone and through their websites, with seasonal sites in high demand.
What to expect on-site
Expect a clear split between full-service private resorts and more rustic public sites. Shady Lakes RV Resort and Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday provide 30/50-amp full hookups, pull-through sites for big rigs, laundry, showers, Wi-Fi, and family amenities like pools and playgrounds. The KOA can accommodate pull-through rigs up to about 80 feet.
Public sites are simpler. Delabar State Park has around 50 tent and trailer sites with 30-amp electric hookups, a dump station, and a jet pump for filling trailers, and accommodates vehicles up to about 46 feet. Big River State Forest camps at the Shady Pines area, where all campers must obtain a permit from the park office. Cell coverage in the forest can be weak, so download maps before arriving.
