Campgrounds near Alorton, Illinois
Alorton sits in the Illinois portion of the St. Louis metro area, a few miles east of the Mississippi River in St. Clair County. RV travelers use it as a base for visiting downtown St. Louis, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, and Gateway Arch National Park, with most nearby campgrounds clustered along Illinois Route 3, Interstate 255, and Interstate 270.
The closest full-hookup options are urban RV parks. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park sits on the Mississippi riverfront in East St. Louis with all pull-through sites, full hookups, and walking access to the St. Louis Metro into downtown. Cahokia RV Parque, a short drive south, offers full hookups, a swimming pool, laundry, and a shuttle to St. Louis attractions. Safari RV Park is another private option in the area.
For a state-park experience, Horseshoe Lake State Park in Madison County offers primitive lakeside sites within roughly 15 miles. Farther north, the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey provides a standard KOA setup off the interstate.
Things to do near Alorton
The Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Zoo in Forest Park, and the City Museum are all reachable within a short drive or a Metro ride from the Illinois-side campgrounds. Cahokia RV Parque runs a shuttle to downtown attractions, which is useful for families who would rather not move the RV.
On the Illinois side, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the remains of the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico and includes an interpretive center and walking trails. Horseshoe Lake State Park adds fishing, boating, birding, and easy cycling on flat terrain, with connections to the MCT Schoolhouse Trail. Gateway International Raceway, just south of Alorton, hosts NASCAR and IndyCar events during the warm months.

The private RV parks around Alorton generally operate year-round or on a long season. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park and Cahokia RV Parque take rigs across most of the year, with Cahokia RV Parque staying open for full-hookup travelers through the colder months as well.
Horseshoe Lake State Park is the key seasonal constraint for state-park campers. The campground is open May 1 through September 30, and camping is first-come, first-served rather than reservable. Campers can stay a maximum of 7 days in a 30-day period. Two-night minimums apply on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends at Illinois state parks.
Summer brings the highest demand, driven by Cardinals home stands and race weekends at Gateway. Spring and fall offer milder temperatures and easier bookings, though spring is the wettest season with frequent thunderstorms. Winter camping is possible at the year-round private parks, but expect cold nights and occasional snow.
How to book
Private RV parks in the Alorton area take reservations directly. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park uses an online reservation system with a three-day cancellation window, and Cahokia RV Parque books through its own site or through Campspot. Safari RV Park handles its own reservations, and the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey is reservable on koa.com.
Horseshoe Lake State Park works differently. Illinois State Parks do not take reservations for individual campsites at Horseshoe Lake; sites are self-service with a pay envelope at the site office. Group camping areas are reservable through the ExploreMoreIL system. For holiday weekends and major St. Louis event dates, book private parks several weeks in advance.
What to expect
Expect urban RV parks with paved or gravel pads, close spacing, and background noise from freight trains, interstates, and river traffic. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park is a gated, all-pull-through lot with full hookups, a renovated bathhouse, coin laundry, and access to the adjacent hotel gym and indoor pool. Cahokia RV Parque offers concrete patios at many sites, a swimming pool, a playground, and an on-site BBQ restaurant.
Horseshoe Lake State Park is primitive: picnic tables, fire rings, a dump station, pit toilets, and drinking water, but no showers and no electric hookups. Cell coverage across the metro area is generally strong. Families with kids will do best at Cahokia RV Parque or the KOA Journey for pools and playgrounds; travelers focused on downtown access will get the most out of the Casino Queen location.
