Campgrounds and RV parks near Altamont, IL

Water recreation is a major draw. Camp Lakewood Campground sits on a lake in Effingham where guests can fish and paddle. Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area centers on a 585-acre lake stocked with largemouth bass, with two boat ramps and a marina, plus a 200-foot sand beach at Rocky Point for swimmers and picnickers. Four established nature trails give hikers options within the park. Hidden Springs State Forest has five stocked fishing ponds, and tent campsites are equipped with pedestal stoves. Trails include the Big Tree Trail, which features a sycamore 78 inches in diameter, and the three-mile Rocky Spring Trail. Off the campground, families use Effingham as a base for the Cross at the Crossroads and local shopping and dining.

The main Illinois state park camping season runs from spring through late fall, with the busiest stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Weekends around holidays fill first at Oak Ridge Campground and other reservable state sites, and popular loops can book to capacity months out. Weekday stays are noticeably easier to secure. Spring brings mild days, wildflowers, and heavier rain. During spring, some areas of Hidden Springs State Forest may experience flooding, so check conditions before heading in. Summers are warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; lake use, swimming, and beach days peak in this window. Fall delivers cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and strong color in the oak-hickory woods, and is often the best time for hiking and quieter campgrounds. Winter camping is limited: some private parks, including Camp Lakewood Campground, stay open year-round, while state forest and state recreation area services may be reduced or shut down between late fall and early spring.

Sites and amenities vary widely. Oak Ridge Campground at Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area offers a campground with 115 sites for RVs and campers, with a separate tent area, plus shower buildings, a marina, and lake access. Camp Lakewood Campground is a family-owned park in Effingham, located within a mile of I-70 and I-57, open year-round and golf-cart friendly, with hookup RV sites, tent sites, and cabin options. Possum Creek at Hidden Springs is more rustic, with drinking water, privies, a sanitary disposal station, pedestal stoves, fire blocks, and a fire ring, but no electric hookups. Cell coverage and rig maneuverability can be tight on rural gravel roads, so larger RVs should confirm site length and access before booking.
