Campgrounds near Alton, Illinois
Alton sits on the Mississippi River in southwestern Illinois, roughly twenty minutes north of downtown St. Louis. The location puts RV travelers within reach of the Great River Road, the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway, and the Metro East side of the St. Louis metro area. Most nearby campgrounds cluster along the I-270 and I-55/70 corridors on the Illinois side of the river.
Options range from full-hookup private parks to primitive state park sites. The St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey serves as a big-rig-friendly base close to St. Louis attractions, while Horseshoe Lake State Park offers 26 tent or trailer campsites with a dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants. Safari RV Park and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park provide urban-adjacent hookups, and Sundermeier RV Park sits across the river in St. Charles, Missouri.
Together these parks cover most trip styles: overnight stopovers on Route 66, weekend fishing and paddling trips, family visits to downtown St. Louis, and longer stays for travelers exploring the confluence region.
Things to do near Alton
Alton is known for winter bald eagle viewing along the Mississippi bluffs, riverboat cruises, and cycling the Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail toward Grafton. The Melvin Price Locks and Dam and the National Great Rivers Museum sit just south of downtown, and Pere Marquette State Park lies about twenty miles upriver.
Across the river, St. Louis puts the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Zoo, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the City Museum within a short drive. Cahokia Mounds and the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site are also nearby on the Illinois side.
Water-based activity is a major draw: Horseshoe Lake contains channel catfish, bass, crappie, bluegill, carp, and buffalo, with boat fishing allowed outside waterfowl season and a 50-horsepower limit on watercraft. Kayaking and boating on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers are also within thirty minutes of most campgrounds.

The camping season in the Alton area runs roughly from April through October, with private RV parks generally open year-round and state park campgrounds operating on a shorter window. The Horseshoe Lake State Park campground is open from May 1 to September 30, with a maximum stay of 7 days in a 30-day period. There are no showers or hookups at the campground, and primitive class C camping is available from May 1 through September 30.
Summer brings hot, humid weather and the highest demand, especially around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends. Spring and fall are more comfortable for touring and typically less crowded, though spring can be wet along the river.
Winter is the off-season for camping but the peak season for bald eagle watching along the Mississippi bluffs between Alton and Grafton. Travelers should also check current park alerts before arrival, as the campground, the road leading to the campground, picnic shelter and hiking trail have been closed due to a causeway installation project, with no access to Chouteau Island scheduled to reopen around October 2026.
How to book campgrounds near Alton
Reservation systems vary by campground. Private parks such as the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey, Safari RV Park, DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, and Sundermeier RV Park take direct online or phone reservations, with pull-through and full-hookup sites bookable in advance. KOA reservations can also be managed through a KOA Rewards account.
Illinois state park camping is handled through the ExploreMoreIL system operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Horseshoe Lake State Park does not take reservations for individual campsites, though group camping reservations are accepted through the ExploreMoreIL website.
Book summer weekends and holiday periods several weeks out, and confirm rig-length limits and hookup type at the time of booking, particularly for longer motorhomes and fifth wheels.
What to expect
Expect a mix of urban-edge RV parks and primitive state park sites rather than remote wilderness camping. The St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey offers full hookups, a seasonal pool, laundry, showers, and pull-through sites, and sits close to interstate access.
Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground has around 25 single-family campsites for tents, trailers and RVs, a short walk to the lake and a few miles from the Mississippi River, with each site offering a table, fire ring and grill. The campground has drinking water, vault toilets and a dump station. Train noise, highway hum, and river-valley humidity are common across the region, so bring bug spray, leveling blocks, and a plan for heat in July and August.

The Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail along Highway 100 is another favorite for long walks with river views. Pere Marquette State Park also allows leashed pets on most trails. That means you can skip the stress of driving a 30-foot motorhome over the Clark Bridge and just enjoy your vacation. Popular delivery spots include Pere Marquette State Park, Lewis and Clark Boat Harbor, and private campgrounds in Grafton. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your destination address to confirm the delivery fee and timing.

You've got fantastic options within a short drive. The best campgrounds near Alton, IL include Pere Marquette State Park Campground in Grafton (about 20 minutes north, with electric sites under towering bluffs), Lewis and Clark Boat Harbor and Campground in West Alton (riverside views and full hookups), Camp Piasa in Brighton, and the St. Louis NE/Granite City KOA about 25 minutes south for full-service amenities. For a quieter weekend, Horseshoe Lake State Park offers primitive sites with great fishing. Pro tip: Pere Marquette books out months ahead for fall foliage weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates are set.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.peremarquette.htmlWhen is the best time of year to visit Alton, IL in an RV?
Alton is a true four-season destination, and each window offers something different. Late April through early June brings wildflowers, mild 60 to 80°F days, and fewer crowds along the Great River Road. September and October are arguably the best for RV camping Alton offers — fall foliage on the limestone bluffs is spectacular, and temperatures sit in the comfortable 55 to 75°F range. Summer (July to August) is warm and humid (often 85 to 95°F) but perfect for river activities. Winter is bald eagle season — hundreds gather at the Melvin Price Locks from late December through February, making it a bucket-list trip if your rental has a furnace.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one in Alton?
You'll do great — Alton is one of the friendliest places in the Midwest for first time renting an RV. Highway 100 (the Great River Road) is flat, well-marked, and gentle compared to mountain driving, and most local campgrounds have pull-through sites that skip the tricky backing. Your host will give you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering the generator, leveling, hookups, and dump procedure, and you can text them anytime during your trip. Plus, RVezy customer support and 24/7 roadside assistance are always a call away. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in a quiet parking lot before heading onto I-255.
idot.illinois.gov/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat outside Grafton or your generator quits at Pere Marquette, one phone call gets help dispatched to your exact location. Your RVezy renter protection plan also covers many incident scenarios, and RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Your host is a great first call too, since they know their RV inside out and can often troubleshoot over the phone in minutes. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so the info is handy if you ever need to call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Alton RV rental across state lines or into Missouri?
Yes, Alton is the perfect launchpad for a multi-state RV road trip from Alton. Crossing into Missouri is easy (downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch are just 25 minutes over the Clark Bridge), and routes through Iowa, Indiana, and Kentucky are all common and covered by your RVezy renter protection plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Travel into Canada may be possible with host approval and additional documentation, so message the host before booking. Popular cross-state routes include Alton to Hannibal, Missouri (about 100 miles north along Mark Twain's hometown) and Alton to Nashville (roughly six hours southeast).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Easy math: budget around $0.30 to $0.50 per mile for fuel and you'll be in great shape. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class B campervans get 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailer mileage depends on your tow vehicle. Regular unleaded in the Alton area is often a bit cheaper than across the river in Missouri, with stations along Homer Adams Parkway and Route 67 offering competitive prices. Pro tip: top off in Wood River or Bethalto before crossing the Clark Bridge. Illinois pumps near the river are usually a few cents cheaper than nearby St. Louis County stations.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=ILHow far in advance should I book a campground near Alton?
Sooner is better, especially for the headliners. Pere Marquette State Park accepts reservations through the Illinois DNR's Camp Illinois reservation system, and prime weekends (October fall foliage, January eagle season, and Memorial Day) fill quickly after release. Lewis and Clark Boat Harbor and private parks like the Granite City KOA accept bookings many months out as well. For weekday or shoulder-season stays, two to three weeks is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the day the reservation window opens for your dates so you can grab the best riverside sites at Pere Marquette as soon as they're released.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Alton?
Driving an RV in and around Alton is refreshingly manageable. The Great River Road (IL-100) is flat, scenic, and rarely congested outside of weekend afternoons in fall. The Clark Bridge into Missouri has wide lanes and generous overhead clearance, so any standard rental fits with room to spare. Spring can bring occasional Mississippi River-related closures along River Road if water levels rise, so check IDOT's Getting Around Illinois map before you roll. Pro tip: skip rush-hour traffic on I-255 and I-270 between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. for an easier, lower-stress drive.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Alton?
You'll find a wide range, from full-service resorts to scenic state parks. Pere Marquette State Park offers electric hookups (no sewer), flush toilets, hot showers, and a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance. The Granite City KOA and Lewis and Clark Boat Harbor offer full hookups (water, electric, 30/50 amp, and sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Most public dump stations in the area are free for registered campers or charge $5 to $10 for outside users. For drinking water fills, every campground host can point you to a potable spigot. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving Alton — rural campgrounds west of the river sometimes have lower water pressure.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.peremarquette.htmlWhat features will my RV rental in Alton have inside?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most motorhome rental Alton listings include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, and a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, three-burner stove, microwave, and sink, plus a full bathroom with shower and toilet. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and seatbelted seating for 4 to 8 passengers. Wi-Fi varies by host, and some offer mobile hotspots as add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's sleep count and seatbelt count separately if you're traveling with kids.

Mileage policies vary, so look for listings that include 100 or more free miles per night if you plan to explore Pere Marquette and St. Louis. Pro tip: bundle linens and a camp chair package. It saves last-minute trips to the store before your campervan rental Alton adventure begins.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alton,%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It's straightforward and secure. When you book an RV in Alton, IL, you pay the trip total through RVezy's secure checkout, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Deposit amounts vary by RV type and are clearly shown before you confirm your booking. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a short walkaround video of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff. It's the easiest way to avoid disputes and helps your full deposit return quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's the can't-miss local experience for a first-time Alton RV traveler?
Don't leave without driving the 15-mile stretch of the Great River Road from Alton to Grafton. It's been named one of the most scenic drives in America, with limestone bluffs on one side and the Mississippi River on the other. Stop at the Piasa Bird mural painted directly on the cliffs, climb the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower in Hartford, and grab lunch on the water in Grafton. In January and February, pull over at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam — hundreds of bald eagles fish right in front of you. Insider tip: take the free Brussels Ferry across the Illinois River for a quiet Calhoun County loop that almost no tourists know about.
