Campgrounds and RV parks near Atkinson, IL

Water recreation dominates the area. Geneseo Campground rents single kayaks, double kayaks, and canoes from April 1 to October 31, with a boat launch on the Hennepin Canal just steps from the campground. Anglers at Johnson Lake target largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and bullhead, with additional fishing along the canal. The Hennepin Canal State Trail is the region's signature route. The canal itself runs about 104.5 miles and is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Visitors can canoe, boat, hike, bike, or ride horseback along the canal, and the towpath serves cyclists, hikers, and equestrians. On land, families can visit Ryan's Round Barn at Johnson-Sauk Trail, hike short loops through hardwood forest, or drive west to Quad Cities attractions including Niabi Zoo and Mississippi riverboat cruises.

The prime RV season runs May through October. At Johnson-Sauk Trail, the Chief Keokuk Campground features 70 pads with electrical hook-ups plus 25 non-electrical tent-only sites; the shower building, sanitary dump station, and all water are open May 1 and close November 1, though the campground remains open in winter months for electric or non-electric dry camping. The Blackhawk Group Area on Lakeshore Loop Road is available for organized youth and adult group camping May 1 through November 1. Summer brings the busiest crowds, warmest lake temperatures, and highest humidity. Spring and fall offer milder weather, thinner mosquito pressure, and easier site availability, though nights can drop near freezing in April and late October. Winter camping is possible at select sites. Winter activities at Johnson-Sauk Trail include ice skating, ice fishing, and sledding as conditions allow. The Hennepin Canal offers the longest snowmobile trail in the state at 91 miles on the towpath, allowed when the trails are declared open by site staff. Sun Retreats Rock River operates seasonally and closes for winter.

Facilities vary widely. Johnson-Sauk Trail's Chief Keokuk Campground features 70 pads with electrical hook-ups for campers or tents, plus 25 non-electrical tent-only sites that are not accessible by vehicle. Rigs up to 40 feet are accommodated, and cell service in the area is fair. Lock 22 is primitive. Vehicular RV or pop-up camping is allowed at the same rate as tent camping, and there are no dumping or pump-out stations located at the park. Bring water and plan to dump elsewhere. Private options are more built out. Sun Retreats Rock River provides 30- and 50-amp electrical, water, and sewer hookups with pull-through sites, plus a pool, fishing access, playground, showers, laundry, and a store. Geneseo Campground offers 59 pull-thru sites, 12 back-in sites, 4 cabins, a yurt, and a camp store stocked with essentials.
