The main RV season runs from April through October. Spring brings green landscapes and moderate temperatures, though it is also among the wettest stretches, and severe thunderstorms are common across southern Illinois from March into June. Low-lying campgrounds near the Mississippi and Kaskaskia rivers can see high water in spring, so travelers should confirm site status before arrival. Summers are hot and muggy, with daytime highs often in the upper 80s to low 90s and dew points that stay elevated. Air conditioning, shaded sites, and early-morning outdoor activity are practical priorities. July and August are peak booking months, driven by school breaks, festivals, and Cardinals home stands in St. Louis. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and fewer bugs from mid-September through October. Winters are very cold, snowy, and windy; many private parks stay open for long-term stays, while state park camping loops may run on a reduced schedule or close entirely.

Most private parks in the Metro East offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-through sites suitable for larger Class A rigs and travel trailers, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Cell coverage from major carriers is strong throughout the Belleville area. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV service are all easy to find along the I-64 and Illinois Route 15 corridors. Horseshoe Lake State Park offers a more rustic public-park experience with electric sites, potable water, and shower buildings, but limited full hookups. Sites are set among mature trees along the lake. Mosquitoes are active from late spring through early fall near lakes and river bottoms. Ticks are present in wooded areas from spring through fall. Standard summer precautions apply.
