Campgrounds and RV parks near Cahokia, IL

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthwork north of Mexico and sits minutes from most local RV parks. Gateway Arch National Park, the Old Courthouse, and Busch Stadium are a short drive or MetroLink ride across the river. Horseshoe Lake State Park includes 3,000 acres and a 1,200-acre lake, with easy access from the Metro East. The park offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing, along with numerous hunting programs from September through February. Families often add the Saint Louis Zoo, City Museum, and Missouri Botanical Garden. Anglers fish the Mississippi backwaters and Horseshoe Lake for bass, crappie, and catfish.

The Cahokia area follows a four-season continental pattern. Its position in the middle latitudes allows the area to be affected by warm moist air that originates in the Gulf, as well as cold air masses that originate in Canada, producing a true four-season climate. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures and lower humidity. Summer brings heat, humidity, and thunderstorms. Records indicate that temperatures of 90 degrees or higher occur on about 35 to 40 days per year, and extremely hot days of 100 degrees or more are expected on no more than five days per year. Thunderstorms normally occur on between 40 and 50 days per year, and a few each year are severe, producing large hail and damaging winds. State-park camping is seasonal. The Horseshoe Lake State Park campground is open from May 1 to September 30, and campers can stay a maximum of 7 days in a 30-day period. Private parks in Cahokia generally operate year-round, though winter travel brings cold snaps and occasional snow.

Cahokia RV Parque runs a traditional urban-adjacent layout, with gravel sites, picnic tables, fire rings, and utilities including 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer. Expect road noise from nearby highways and freight lines, offset by quick access to St. Louis attractions. Horseshoe Lake State Park is primitive by comparison. There are no showers or hookups at the campground, but each campsite has a table, fire ring and grill, and the campground has drinking water, vault toilets and a dump station. Bring leveling blocks, fresh water, and a full propane tank. Check current alerts before arrival. The campground, the road leading to the campground, picnic shelter #3 and hiking trail have been closed due to an installation project on the causeway, so confirm status with the site office before rolling in.
