Campgrounds and RV parks near Cairo, IL

History drives most day-trip planning here. Fort Massac State Park has a reconstructed early-1800s American fort, a museum, and living-history weekends, and every October the park hosts the Fort Massac Encampment, a multi-day period reenactment event. Columbus Belmont State Park preserves Confederate earthworks and rifle pits on bluffs above the Mississippi and includes hiking trails, a museum, a mini-golf course, and the massive anchor and chain used to block the river during the Civil War. On the water, the Ohio and Mississippi rivers support fishing and boating, and Columbus Belmont has boat ramps for Mississippi access. Families staying at Fern Lake Campground or Main Brothers Campground can fish on-site without towing to a public launch.

Southern Illinois has a humid subtropical climate with no true dry season, so timing is about heat, river levels, and campground services rather than avoiding rain. Spring brings the wettest stretch and the highest river stages; April is typically the wettest month, and flooding along the Ohio and Mississippi can affect low-lying access roads. Summer is hot and humid, with July averaging highs near 89°F and afternoon thunderstorms common. Sites at Fort Massac State Park fill fastest around the October Fort Massac Encampment weekend and on summer holidays, so book several weeks out for weekends. Fall brings the most comfortable window for RV travel, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and drier weather through September and October. Winter camping is possible, but Kentucky State Parks warns that water and other resources at Columbus Belmont cannot be guaranteed during freezing months, and Fort Massac shifts to first-come, first-served during the off-season.

Fort Massac State Park has 50 Class A vehicular sites with 30- and 50-amp electric hookups (no water or sewer at the site), a shower building, a dump station, water spigots throughout the loops, and can accommodate rigs up to about 65 feet. Sites sit close to Metropolis, so expect some town noise, not a remote-forest feel. Columbus Belmont State Park has 38 sites on bluffs over the Mississippi, with 11 full-hookup sites and the remainder water-and-electric. The campground has a bathhouse, dump station, laundry, playground, and boat ramp access. Private parks near Cairo lean toward full hookups and pull-throughs suitable for larger fifth-wheels. Cell coverage in the immediate area can be uneven, so download maps and reservations before arrival.
