Campgrounds and RV parks near Cambridge, IL

The Hennepin Canal State Trail is the main draw for RV travelers. The trail covers about 72 miles and offers bicycling, canoeing, and hiking. Anglers can fish the canal for bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Geneseo Campground sits directly on the canal and rents kayaks, canoes, pedal carts, and bikes for guests who want to use the trail from their site. Families looking for on-site amenities gravitate to Sun Retreats Rock River, which features a family pool, camp store, mini golf, tennis, rolle bolle, gem mining, paddle boats and canoes, a snack bar, and a large playground. The Quad Cities lie about 20 to 30 minutes northwest and add riverboat cruises on the Mississippi, the John Deere Pavilion, and larger-city dining. Bishop Hill, a preserved Swedish colonial village, is a short drive south of Cambridge for a lower-key day trip.

Northwestern Illinois has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold winters. Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October. Sun Retreats Rock River operates on a seasonal calendar, opening in mid-April and closing in late October, which is typical for private resorts along the Rock River. Geneseo Campground operates as a private park with a longer shoulder season. Late spring and early summer bring the greenest canal trail along with rising mosquito and fly pressure. Reviewers commonly note that flies and mosquitoes can be an issue later in the summer, so screens and repellent are worth packing. July and August are the warmest months, with humidity that makes shaded, tree-covered sites more comfortable, and summer is also the wettest season on average. Fall is the sweet spot for many RVers: cooler nights, thinning bugs, and easier weekend availability at private parks. Winter camping is possible at some private parks, though snow, freezing temperatures, and reduced amenities are the norm from December through February.

Most campgrounds in this corridor are level, grassy, and easy to navigate with a rental RV. Geneseo Campground offers full-hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer in 30 and 50 amp service, plus pull-through sites with water and electric only in 30 amp. Sun Retreats Rock River has RV sites with concrete pads and full hookups on 30 and 50 amp service, and the park is big-rig friendly. Watch clearances when routing off the interstate. There is a 10-foot overpass in the town of Geneseo, and Geneseo Campground publishes an alternate truck route via Exit 7 at Colona to avoid it. Cell coverage is generally solid across Henry and Rock Island counties, and Geneseo Campground has fiber-powered WiFi across the property for travelers who need to stay online.
