Campgrounds and RV parks near Caseyville, IL

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is the region's signature destination, preserving the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can walk miles of trails and climb the stairway to the top of the 100-foot Monks Mound for views of downtown St. Louis. The Interpretive Center has been closed for extensive renovations, so plan for a self-guided outdoor visit. Horseshoe Lake State Park offers fishing, boating limited to 50 horsepower, hiking, and wildlife viewing on a 1,200-acre natural oxbow lake, with three boat ramps and an accessible fishing pier. Across the river, Gateway Arch National Park, the St. Louis Zoo, Forest Park, and Busch Stadium are all reachable within a short drive.

Late spring through early fall is the primary RV window in the area. Horseshoe Lake State Park operates on a seasonal calendar with its campground open from May 1 through September 30. Private RV parks in the Metro East generally stay open year-round, so shoulder-season and winter travel are possible when hookups are the priority. Before planning a state park trip, check current alerts: the Horseshoe Lake campground and its access road have been closed for a causeway installation project, with access to Chouteau Island restricted during ongoing bridge repair. Summer brings hot, humid conditions with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and the region sits in an active severe-weather corridor, so tornado watches and warnings are not unusual from spring into early summer. May is the wettest month, while late summer and early fall typically deliver the most stable weather. Holiday weekends fill quickly at both public and private sites near St. Louis. Memorial Day, Independence Day when July 4th falls on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, and Labor Day carry a two-night minimum stay across Illinois state parks, with a fee increase during those windows.

Private RV parks in the Metro East typically provide 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and laundry, with paved or gravel pull-through sites suited to larger rigs. Locations near the interstate can carry some highway noise, a common trade-off for the easy access to St. Louis attractions. Horseshoe Lake State Park is primitive: expect a picnic table, fire ring, and grill at each site, plus a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants, but no showers and no hookups. Watercraft on the lake are limited to 50 horsepower and swimming is not permitted. Ticks and poison ivy are present on longer trails at Cahokia Mounds and Horseshoe Lake, so long pants and repellent are worth packing during warmer months.
