Camping near Coal Valley, Illinois
Coal Valley sits in Rock Island and Henry counties in northwestern Illinois, functioning as a residential suburb of the greater Quad Cities area. The village is best known to visitors as the home of Niabi Zoo, and the Rock and Mississippi rivers give the wider region its shape and its recreation.
RV travelers use Coal Valley as a base for river camping. The closest options cluster along the Rock River east of Moline, with Lundeen's Landing Campground and Tube Rentals and Lundeen's Rock River Landing offering riverfront sites, and Sun Retreats Rock River providing a larger resort-style property. Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday sits on the Illinois side of the metro, and Camp Hauberg is another nearby option.
Beyond the private parks, the Rock Island County Forest Preserve District operates campgrounds at Illiniwek and Loud Thunder forest preserves, adding public-land alternatives within a short drive. The Illinois Great River Road runs through the area, connecting campgrounds to Mississippi River overlooks, small towns, and state historic sites.
Things to do around Coal Valley
Niabi Zoo is 40 acres in size, located inside a 287-acre forest preserve, and contains more than 600 animals representing nearly 200 species. The grounds include a train ride, an endangered-species carousel, and giraffe feeding, making it a solid half-day stop for families.
On the water, Lundeen's Landing Campground and Tube Rentals runs 4 and 8 mile tube trips, along with kayak and canoe rentals from its riverfront base. Loud Thunder Forest Preserve has a boat rental operation on Lake George, plus a two-mile moderate hiking trail and a 12-mile shared-use loop.

Camping in the Coal Valley area is a seasonal affair. Most private and public campgrounds run roughly April through October. Lundeen's Landing keeps its river-front sites open from April to Halloween, and the Rock Island County Forest Preserve camping season is generally the first weekend in April through the last weekend in October each year as weather permits.
Spring brings the wettest weather of the year, with rivers running high through May. Water access is weather-dependent at both Illiniwek and Loud Thunder Forest Preserve, and will not be available until nighttime temperatures stay above freezing, so early April trips can be primitive-only.
Summer is peak season: warm, humid, and busy. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill first at riverfront properties. Fall cools quickly through September and October and delivers the region's most comfortable RV weather, though sites begin closing by late October. Winter camping is not offered at area campgrounds.
How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds in the area are booked directly. Lundeen's Landing Campground and Tube Rentals, Lundeen's Rock River Landing, Sun Retreats Rock River, and Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday each take reservations through their own websites, with KOA also using the KOA reservation platform. Riverfront rows and holiday weekends go first, so book early for summer.
For public land, Loud Thunder accepts online reservations through the Rock Island County Forest Preserve District, with a two-night minimum and no refunds and no reservation date or campsite switching allowed. Illiniwek Forest Preserve provides campsites on a first-come, first-served basis.
Illinois state parks in the wider region use the ExploreMoreIL platform, which requires a permit to reserve a site and charges a non-refundable reservation fee.
What to expect on-site
Rock River properties near Coal Valley are family-owned RV parks with a mix of pull-thru and back-in sites, 30- and 50-amp electric, water, dump stations, restrooms, showers, and small general stores. Sites tend to be grassy and close together, and riverfront rows book earliest.
Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday follows the KOA formula, with full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and family-oriented amenities. Sun Retreats Rock River leans larger and more resort-style, while Camp Hauberg is a more rustic setting.
Forest preserve campgrounds are simpler. Loud Thunder has five campgrounds totaling 140 campsites, including a Horse Corral campground, and the Deer Haven area features 35 pull-through sites with water, sewer, and 50-amp electricity. Pets must be leashed at every property in the area.
