Campgrounds near Coffeen, Illinois
Coffeen is a small village in Montgomery County in south-central Illinois, roughly midway between Springfield and the St. Louis metro area. The surrounding countryside is a mix of farmland, hardwood timber, and reservoir lakes, with Coffeen Lake just south of the village and Ramsey Lake a short drive to the south in Fayette County. RV travelers use the area as a quiet base for lake fishing, wildlife viewing, and short drives to Litchfield, Hillsboro, and Vandalia.
Campground options within a short drive include Timber Trails Campground and Cedarbrook Campground, along with White Oak at Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area, Country Bend Campground, and Kamper Kompanion RV Park. The mix covers private RV parks and a state-run campground on the shore of Ramsey Lake.
Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and is the largest public campground in the immediate area. The park covers 1,980 acres and is built around a 40-acre reservoir on Ramsey Creek, a tributary of the Kaskaskia River.
Things to do around Coffeen
Fishing is the main draw. Coffeen Lake holds 22 fish species, with anglers targeting largemouth bass, white crappie, channel catfish, and striped bass, and the lake has a reputation for producing large fish thanks to warm water from the former power-plant cooling system. Motors of 25 horsepower or less are allowed on Coffeen Lake, and swimming and water skiing are prohibited.
Ramsey Lake offers hiking, biking, picnicking, equestrian trails, and hunting in season. A boat ramp, playground, and hiking trails near White Oak Campground make day trips easy for families staying at the state site or the nearby private campgrounds.
Off-park excursions include Route 66 stops in Litchfield, the Lincoln sites in Springfield, and small-town diners and county fairs across Montgomery and Fayette counties.

The main camping season runs May through October, which lines up with the standard Illinois State Parks reservation window for most sites. Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and the region's wettest stretch, with thunderstorms common from April into June. Sites are usually easy to book on weekdays but fill on holiday weekends.
Summer is warm and humid, with July highs typically in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and afternoon storms possible. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are the busiest at Ramsey Lake and at private parks, and Illinois DNR requires a two-night minimum on those holiday weekends at most sites.
Fall is often the most comfortable window for RV travel: cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through October. Winter camping is limited. A handful of Illinois state parks accept reservations year-round, but most private parks in the area scale back services or close between November and March, so call ahead before planning a cold-weather trip.

Sites at White Oak and elsewhere within Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL platform, the customer service portal of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Regular campsite reservations require a five-dollar non-refundable reservation fee plus payment of the full camping and utility fees at the time of booking, by Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.

A campsite may be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends carry a two-night minimum. Most campgrounds also hold a portion of sites as first-come, first-served.
