Campgrounds near Colona, Illinois
Colona sits at the junction of the Rock River, Green River, and the historic Hennepin Canal in northwestern Illinois, just east of the Quad Cities. The location gives RV travelers direct access to water recreation and a compact cluster of private campgrounds within a short drive.
The closest options hug the Rock River. Lundeen's Landing Campground and Tube Rentals and Lundeen's Rock River Landing operate along Barstow Road in East Moline, offering riverfront sites with 30 and 50-amp service, a general store, and a dump station. Sun Retreats Rock River lies a bit farther west with roughly 275 sites, and Geneseo Campground sits along the Hennepin Canal about 10 miles south with 59 pull-through and 12 back-in sites, plus four cabins and a yurt.
Camp Hauberg, on the Mississippi River two miles north of Port Byron, adds a wooded 40-acre alternative with 30-amp electric and water hookups, a boat ramp, and lodge rentals. Together these properties cover full-service RV camping, primitive tent sites, and family-focused resort layouts.
Things to do near Colona
Water activities dominate the area. The Rock River supports tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, with rentals available at Lundeen's Landing Campground and Tube Rentals and at Geneseo Campground for registered guests. Anglers target bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish across the river, the Green River, and the Hennepin Canal.
The Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park runs directly through Colona, with a long canal towpath used for biking, hiking, and paddling between locks and aqueducts. Boat launches sit along the canal, and Colona Scott Family Park adds playgrounds and river access.
Within about 15 minutes, the Quad Cities add the John Deere Pavilion in Moline, riverfront parks, and Illiniwek Forest Preserve on the Mississippi for bald eagle viewing in winter.

The main camping window runs from spring through mid-fall. Private riverfront parks in the area, including Lundeen's Landing Campground and Tube Rentals, operate roughly late April through October 31, matching the regional season for kayak, canoe, and tube rentals. Geneseo Campground follows a similar April through October pattern, with paddling gear available across that window.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill early at private parks and at Hennepin Canal primitive sites. July also brings local Rock River events and fireworks, which push demand higher.
Spring can be wet. Flood risk on the Rock and Mississippi rivers runs highest during snowmelt and heavy spring rainfall, and low-lying riverfront sites occasionally close on short notice. Fall offers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fishing, with most private facilities winding down by early November and Camp Hauberg remaining open year-round for hardier campers.
How to book near Colona
Private campgrounds around Colona each use their own reservation systems. Geneseo Campground books online through its website and accepts same-day reservations until 6 p.m. Central. Lundeen's Rock River Landing lists availability on Campspot, and Camp Hauberg takes reservations by phone through its official site.
Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park campsites are primitive and first-come, first-served, with vehicular access at each site but no showers, running water, or dump stations. Equestrian camping is limited to Lock 21. For state-park sites elsewhere in Illinois that do require booking, IDNR uses an online reservation system reachable from dnr.illinois.gov.
Book summer weekends several weeks ahead at the private parks. Shoulder-season midweek stays are usually available on shorter notice.
What to expect at Colona campgrounds
Sites near the rivers are generally level and grassy, with a mix of pull-through and back-in configurations. Full-hookup 30 and 50 amp sites are common at Geneseo Campground and the Lundeen's properties, while Camp Hauberg runs 30-amp electric with water on shaded, wooded lots and a dump station on site. Larger rigs are accommodated at most parks, though tight interior loops and mature trees reward careful site selection.
Expect ambient train noise at many riverfront campgrounds, since rail lines parallel both the Mississippi and Rock rivers. Mosquitoes and flies pick up in late summer along the canal, and river flooding can affect low sites during wet springs.
Amenities typically include modern shower houses, camp stores with ice and firewood, dump stations, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi. Most parks are pet-friendly on leash.

Booking an RV rental in Colona is lower-risk than most travelers expect. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a grace period right after you book where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that, refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and RVezy also considers extraordinary events, which matters when spring thunderstorms or winter weather can sweep through the Quad Cities. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the awning alone. Pro tip: use the Delivery filter, then ask the host for a flat delivery fee quote to your specific campground (most hosts price by distance from their home base).

weather.gov/dvn/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to be just fine, and Colona is actually a great launchpad for first time renting an RV. Roads here are flat, lanes are wide, and I-80 and I-74 are forgiving compared to mountain or coastal driving. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, propane, the awning, and waste tanks, and you can text them anytime during your trip with questions. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: start with a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer, plan a short first leg (Illiniwek Forest Preserve is only 15 minutes from Colona), and get comfortable before tackling longer routes.

Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number and your host's contact info to your phone before you pull out of the driveway, and snap a photo of your license plate and VIN just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Colona RV rental to Iowa, Wisconsin, or across state lines?
Yes, crossing state lines is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Colona. You're literally minutes from the Iowa border via the I-74 or I-80 bridges, and most RVezy hosts welcome interstate travel across the Midwest, including popular runs to the Wisconsin Dells, Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, and the Indiana Dunes. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't extend there, and trips into Canada depend on the host and their coverage. Pro tip: confirm your full route with the host when you message them before booking. Popular cross-border loops from Colona include the Great River Road north into Wisconsin and a Quad Cities to Galena to Dubuque, Iowa weekend.
travelwisconsin.com/What kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost around Colona?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Class C motorhomes around Colona typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 15 to 20 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers 9 to 13 MPG. Illinois gas prices usually run a bit higher than Iowa just across the river, so a quick tip: fill up in Bettendorf or Davenport, IA before heading home and you can save 20 to 40 cents per gallon. Pro tip: budget around $0.30 to $0.45 per mile for fuel on a motorhome, build in a buffer for generator use at campgrounds without hookups, and use GasBuddy to spot the cheapest stations along I-80.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Colona?
For the best sites, book your campground as soon as your RVezy reservation is locked in. Illinois State Parks and US Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds (like Fisherman's Corner) open reservations 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, and prime Mississippi River sites for July 4th, Memorial Day, and the Quad Cities Air Show vanish within hours of opening. Colona Scott Family Park and private campgrounds like Camelot Campground Quad Cities take direct reservations and fill 2 to 3 months out for summer weekends. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) are usually wide open even in July, so plan a Monday-Thursday family RV trip Colona for the best pick of riverfront sites.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like in and around Colona?
Driving an RV around Colona is refreshingly easy. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, I-80 and I-74 are wide and well-maintained, and the Quad Cities region rarely sees the gridlock of bigger metros. Watch for the Mississippi River bridge crosswinds on the I-74 and I-280 bridges (slow down a notch in gusty weather), occasional fog along the Rock River early mornings, and winter ice from December through February if you're renting in shoulder season. Construction season runs roughly April through October, so check IDOT's travel map before long drives. Pro tip: avoid downtown Davenport and Moline rush hour (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM) when you're behind the wheel of a tall motorhome, and use the bypass on I-280.

Mileage policies vary by listing, with many hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and the option to prepay extra miles at a discount. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than asking last-minute. Pre-stocked kitchen and linen kits save you a Walmart run on day one of your Colona RV trip.
colona.org/visitorsHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Colona RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform. You pay your rental total (nightly rate, fees, add-ons, protection plan) via credit or debit card at booking, with no cash changing hands at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before your trip, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and it is released after your host confirms the rig came back clean, fueled, and undamaged. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video at pickup AND drop-off, save all your receipts for fuel and propane refills, and follow the host's cleaning checklist so your full deposit returns to your card within a few days of finishing your Colona RV rental.
