Campgrounds near Como, Illinois
Como is a small unincorporated community in Whiteside County, northwestern Illinois, sitting along the Rock River between Sterling and Rock Falls. The area is flat farmland cut by the Rock River corridor and the historic Hennepin Canal, which together shape most of the local outdoor recreation. RV travelers use Como as a quiet base within short driving distance of state parks, private resorts, and canal-side campsites.
The closest options span both public and private operators. Prophetstown State Park sits on the north bank of the Rock River in Whiteside County, a short drive southwest. Crow Valley Campground and Crystal Lake RV Park serve travelers looking for full-service private grounds, while Timber Lake Resort and Campground offers a resort-style layout with lake activities.
For cyclists and paddlers, the Hennepin Canal State Park is not enrolled in the camping reservation system and does not take camping reservations, and camping at the canal is on a first-come, first-serve basis, with Lock 22 among the designated sites along the towpath.
Things to do near Como
The Rock River drives much of the local recreation. Anglers use a concrete boat ramp at Prophetstown State Park to fish the Rock River for smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, bullhead, carp, sauger and walleye, and can also cast into nearby Coon Creek. Kayaking and canoeing are common on quieter stretches of the river and canal.
The Hennepin Canal is the other major draw. The towpath provides over 100 miles of hiking and biking between the Illinois River and the Rock River, with a feeder canal path extending to Rock Falls. The locks are no longer operational and must be portaged, so paddlers should plan accordingly. Segments are also open to horseback riding and, in winter, to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Timber Lake Resort and Crystal Lake RV Park add family amenities such as swimming and beach access on-site.

The camping calendar in this part of Illinois is tightly seasonal. The campground at Prophetstown State Park operates from May 1 through October 31, and facilities may close earlier or open later due to flooding or budget constraints. Spring high water on the Rock River is the most common reason for late openings.
Summer is peak season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly at reservable state and private parks, and holiday weekends around the Fourth of July and Labor Day should be booked well in advance. Weekdays remain much easier to secure.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and river-corridor color into mid-October, but overnight lows can drop below freezing by early November. Winter camping options are limited. State campgrounds in the area close for the season, while the canal towpath transitions to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing use on open segments. Private RV parks vary, so verify hookup availability before arriving in shoulder months.
How to book RV sites near Como
State-park sites in Illinois are handled through the state's central system. At Prophetstown State Park, electrical hookups and a dump station are available, and reservable sites are booked through ExploreMoreIL. Reservations open on a rolling window, so booking six to twelve weeks ahead is recommended for summer weekends.
The Hennepin Canal works differently. The Hennepin Canal State Park is not enrolled in the camping reservation system and does not take camping reservations; camping is first-come, first-serve with no set check-in or check-out times, and the site's security officer collects fees in person by cash or check. Bring exact payment.
Private parks such as Crow Valley Campground, Crystal Lake RV Park, and Timber Lake Resort and Campground take direct reservations by phone or online. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup amperage, and pet rules at booking.
What to expect on-site
State-park sites in the area lean rustic. Prophetstown offers RV sites with electrical service and access to a dump station, but bathhouse quality varies and some loops rely on vault toilets. Sites are set within a treed state park with river views from picnic areas.
Hennepin Canal campsites are primitive. Camping is not permitted in the main complex area around the visitor center, and the only drinking water on the entire canal is located at the main parking lot in front of the visitor center at the large shelter, with an additional faucet on the side of the visitor center. Haul water in for other sites.
Private resorts including Timber Lake Resort and Crystal Lake RV Park generally provide full hookups, showers, laundry, and family amenities. Cell coverage across the Rock River corridor is generally reliable for major carriers.
