Campgrounds near DeKalb, Illinois
DeKalb sits in north-central Illinois, about 65 miles west of Chicago along Interstate 88 and near I-90 and I-39. The surrounding DeKalb and Boone County countryside is a mix of farm land, oak groves, and small lakes along the Kishwaukee River, and it functions as a practical staging area for RV travelers heading to or from the Chicago metro.
Most camping options within an hour of the city are private, family-run RV parks with full hookups, plus one state recreation area at Shabbona Lake. Closest to town, Sycamore RV Resort in DeKalb County offers fishing in two spring-fed lakes, a swimming beach, and boat rentals. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo and Pine Country RV and Camping Resort in Belvidere both sit off I-90 and cater to longer stays. Holiday Acres Camping Resort lies along the Kishwaukee River in the Garden Prairie area, and Hi-Tide Recreation to the south is oriented around a private lake.
Together these parks give RV travelers a wide range of layouts, from wooded riverfront to open pull-through sites.
Things to do around DeKalb
Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area is the main outdoor draw in the county. Opened in 1978, the park covers roughly 1,500 acres with a 315-acre lake managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and Shabbona Lake was declared the Muskie Capitol of Illinois and one of Illinois' best fishing lakes by the Illinois General Assembly in 2011. The lake is no-wake for all motors, and the on-site concession rents Lund fishing boats, pontoons, motor boats, row boats, paddle boats, kayaks and paddle boards. Pokanoka's Café, named after Chief Shabbona's Wife, overlooks the lake through large glass windows. Just over 8 miles of scenic hiking and cross-country skiing trails weave through the wooded areas of the park.
Sycamore RV Resort has two spring-fed lakes with a swim beach, paddle boats, pickleball, and tennis on-site. Off-site day trips include the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, downtown Sycamore, and Rockford to the west.

Sycamore RV Resort is open April 1 through October 31, and Pine Country RV and Camping Resort operates roughly April 15 through mid-October. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort has over 295 campsites on 65 acres and is open all year with full hookups.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. Catherine was incredibly responsive and always quick to answer any questions we had. It was obvious she put a lot of thought into making sure her guests had a great experience. If you’re looking to rent a camper, we highly recommend Catherine. We wouldn’t hesitate to rent from her again. Thank you for helping make our weekend such a wonderful trip!

How to book
Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area has 150 Class A Premium campsites, with 90 available for advanced reservation through ExploreMoreIL and 60 held on a first-come, first-served basis. All sites have electricity, a picnic table, fire rings, and vehicle access, and a sanitary dump station is available to all campers. Picnic shelters at Shabbona Grove and Three Fires can also be reserved through ExploreMoreIL.
Private parks in the area, including Sycamore RV Resort, Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort, Holiday Acres Camping Resort, and Hi-Tide Recreation, are booked directly through each campground's own website or by phone. Pine Country operates within the Thousand Trails network of campgrounds, so members book through Thousand Trails while non-members can reserve select sites directly.
Summer weekends and holidays sell out early, so book several weeks ahead when possible.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=DeKalb%2C%20IllinoisWhat license do I need to rent an RV in DeKalb, Illinois?
You're in luck: a regular Illinois driver's license (or any valid U.S. or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in DeKalb, IL. Illinois does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for any motorhome or travel trailer you'll find on RVezy. The only firm rule is that the primary driver must be 25 or older. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/home.htmlIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my DeKalb RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in DeKalb, IL booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort during checkout. Roadside help covers flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, and towing, so if anything happens between DeKalb and Starved Rock you have a real phone number to call. That peace of mind is part of why first-time renters love booking through RVezy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my RV rental in DeKalb?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, not individual hosts, and you can review the full policy on the RVezy website before you confirm payment. Refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your pickup date. If your host cancels, RVezy issues a refund or credit so your DeKalb RV trip plans stay protected. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Cornfest or NIU homecoming weekend RVs, and read the cancellation policy carefully at checkout.

dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.shabbonalake.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in DeKalb?
Yes, RV delivery in DeKalb is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers and families. Many hosts will drive the RV to your driveway, a Northern Illinois University tailgate spot, or directly to a campground like Sycamore RV Resort or Shabbona Lake. They will level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave, so you can focus on the fun part. Just filter by Delivery when you search, then message the host with your destination address to confirm the fee (usually based on mileage from their location).

dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.shabbonalake.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from DeKalb?
DeKalb has a true four-season climate, and the sweet spot for RV camping in DeKalb runs from late April through mid-October. Summers (June to August) average highs of 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for Shabbona Lake swimming and Cornfest in late August. Fall (September to October) is the local insider favorite: highs in the 60s and 70s, harvest colors across DeKalb County's prairies, and noticeably lower nightly rates. Spring brings 50s and 60s with occasional rain. Winters are cold (average highs in the 30s, with snow), so most state park campgrounds close from November through March, though winterized rentals are available year-round.
weather.gov/lot/I have never rented an RV before, will I be able to figure it out?
You have got this, and you will not be alone. First time renting an RV in DeKalb? Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup: how to operate the water pump, propane, slide-outs, awning, generator, and waste system. They will answer questions until you feel confident, and many provide a printed cheat-sheet too. If something stumps you mid-trip, you can message the host directly through the RVezy app or call 24/7 roadside support. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C motorhome or a 22 to 25 foot travel trailer for your first DeKalb RV trip. They are easy to handle on flat Illinois roads and forgiving in campground sites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my DeKalb trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on I-88 heading toward Chicago or have engine trouble near Shabbona Lake, one phone call gets help on the way. Roadside assistance handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app for questions about quirks specific to their RV. Northern Illinois has excellent cellular coverage and service centers in DeKalb, Sycamore, Rockford, and Aurora, so help is rarely far away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my DeKalb RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most DeKalb RV rentals, and many guests use DeKalb as a launchpad for road trips to Wisconsin's Door County (about 4.5 hours), Indiana Dunes National Park (about 2 hours), the Mississippi River via Galena, or up to Lake Superior. Canada is allowed on many listings too, but confirm with your host and review insurance details before crossing. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan does not extend there. Message the host directly from the listing page before booking to confirm your route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a DeKalb RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes you'll rent in DeKalb get around 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers towed by your truck stretch fuel a bit further, and Class B campervans can hit 16 to 20 mpg. As of recent months, regular unleaded in DeKalb County runs around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon, typically a bit cheaper than Chicago. For a 3-night trip with 300 miles of driving, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Costco in St. Charles or the Pilot off I-88 before heading out for the lowest local prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near DeKalb?
For Illinois state parks like Shabbona Lake and Starved Rock, reservations open 6 months ahead through ExploreMoreIL (Illinois DNR's official reservation system), and prime summer weekends genuinely fill within days, so book the moment your window opens. Private parks like Sycamore RV Resort and Paul Wolff Campground typically allow bookings several months out, with more flexibility midweek. For shoulder-season trips in May or September, you can often score a great site with just 2 to 3 weeks notice. Pro tip: if you strike out on Shabbona Lake, check for cancellations Sunday evenings, when many weekend bookings get released.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around DeKalb, IL?
Good news for new RVers: DeKalb sits in flat, open farmland with wide highways, making it one of the easiest places in the Midwest to drive a motorhome. I-88 (the Reagan Memorial Tollway) runs right through, connecting smoothly to Chicago and the Quad Cities. Watch for crosswinds on open stretches between Rochelle and DeKalb, and slow down on rural two-lane roads where farm equipment moves seasonally (April to October). Winter brings snow and occasional ice from late November through March, so most renters stick to non-winter months. Pro tip: avoid downtown Chicago in a big rig and instead park at a suburban campground and take Metra into the city.
illinoistollway.com/What hookups and amenities do DeKalb campgrounds offer?
You will find a great range. Sycamore RV Resort offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer at the site) along with WiFi, laundry, and a dump station. Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area provides electric sites with a centralized dump station and potable water fill near the entrance, plus modern restrooms and showers. For dumping and filling water between trips, the Flying J in Rochelle (about 20 miles southwest) and many private parks allow non-guest dumping for a small fee. Pro tip: arrive with full freshwater and empty waste tanks for maximum flexibility on your first night.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.shabbonalake.htmlWhat is typically included inside a DeKalb RV rental?
More than you would expect. Most motorhome rentals in DeKalb come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, a kitchen with a fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, and usually a full bathroom with shower and toilet. Class A and Class C motorhomes seat passengers with seatbelts (count seatbelts before booking if you are traveling with kids), and many include a generator for off-grid power, roof and dash air conditioning, and a TV. WiFi varies by host but cellular hotspots work well across DeKalb County. Travel trailers offer similar interiors minus the cab. Check the listing photos and message the host with any must-haves.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=DeKalb%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons can I get with my campervan rental in DeKalb?
Lots of options to make your trip easier. Popular add-ons on a campervan rental in DeKalb include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $30), generators ($25 to $50/night), grills, bike racks, and even kayaks. Hosts also commonly offer pre-stocked kitchen kits and propane top-offs. For pickup and dropoff, most DeKalb hosts meet you at their address with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough, while delivery to your driveway or campground is widely available for a flat or per-mile fee. Mileage allowances are listed on each listing, so check the details before booking to match your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=DeKalb%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after dropoff, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff to document everything. It is the easiest way to ensure a smooth deposit return on your DeKalb RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from DeKalb, IL?
DeKalb's central location makes it a fantastic launchpad. Starved Rock State Park (about 55 miles south, 1 hour) is famous for sandstone canyons and seasonal waterfalls. Galena (about 160 miles northwest) offers historic Main Street charm and Mississippi River views. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (75 miles north, 1.5 hours) brings lakeside resorts and wine country. Chicago is just 65 miles east, perfect for parking at a suburban campground and training in. For a bigger adventure, Indiana Dunes National Park sits about 110 miles east (around 2 hours). A family RV trip in DeKalb often combines a Shabbona Lake weekend with a Starved Rock day trip, and flat highways make multi-stop loops easy.
