Campgrounds and RV parks near Dieterich, IL

Fox Ridge State Park is the standout for hiking. The 2,064-acre park lies along the Embarras River, is full of ridges and ravines that provide moderate hiking trails, and is popular with hikers and mushroom hunters. Stairs lead up to the Eagles Nest Overlook. Special fishing restrictions apply at Fox Ridge, and fishing at Ridge Lake is available by reservation only, as the lake doubles as a research facility. Hidden Springs State Forest has shorter interpretive trails. The Possum Hollow Nature Trail runs three-quarters of a mile and provides access to Park Pond and the pine seed orchard, while the one-mile Big Tree Trail features a sycamore 78 inches in diameter, one of the largest in Illinois. Small ponds throughout the forest support casual fishing. Families staying at Camp Lakewood can swim, fish, and paddle on the lake. Casey, about 25 minutes east, is known for its collection of Guinness-record World's Largest roadside attractions, including a giant wind chime and knitting needles. The Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site is also nearby.

Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill first at private parks like Camp Lakewood and Casey KOA, and the Casey KOA pool operates from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Fox Ridge reservable sites book heavily on summer weekends. Fall delivers reliable color on the wooded ridges and cooler nights, and crowds thin after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited: Camp Lakewood is open year round, Casey KOA is open from March 1 through October 31, and state park shower buildings shut for the cold months.
