Camping near Divernon, Illinois
Divernon is a small village in Sangamon County, central Illinois, positioned along Interstate 55 roughly fifteen miles south of Springfield. Its location on the I-55 corridor makes it a practical base for RV travelers moving between Chicago and St. Louis, and it sits within easy reach of the state capital's Abraham Lincoln historic sites and Route 66 landmarks.
The surrounding landscape is classic Illinois prairie and farmland, flat and open, with reservoirs and small lakes providing most of the outdoor recreation. The nearest full-service state park camping is at Sangchris Lake State Park, where Hickory Point sits on the eastern shore near the boat dock with electric-hookup sites and cabins.
RV options in the area range from private full-hookup parks to state-run lakeside grounds. Double J Campground and RV Park, Springfield KOA Journey, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, and Country Bend Campground cover the private side, while Hickory Point at Sangchris Lake State Park offers electric-only sites close to the water.
Things to do near Divernon
Springfield is the main draw for day trips. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Old State Capitol, and Lincoln's Tomb are all within a short drive, and the Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site west of the city recreates the 1830s village where Lincoln lived. Route 66 attractions run through the corridor, with museums and vintage roadside stops in and around Springfield.
Lake Springfield offers boating, fishing, and paddling on the west side of the city. Sangchris Lake holds bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish, with boat access from the East Ramp, West Ramp, and Strawkus Ramp, and the state park has hiking, wildlife viewing, and seasonal hunting areas.

Central Illinois has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. May through October brings comfortable daytime temperatures, open state park campgrounds, and full amenities. Summer weekends around the Illinois State Fair in August draw heavy demand at Springfield-area parks, and sites near the fairgrounds book out well in advance.
Spring can be wet, with May typically the wettest month of the year and occasional severe thunderstorms and tornadoes passing across the prairie. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and generally drier conditions through October, making it a strong shoulder-season choice for RV travel.
Winter camping is limited. Deer Run at Sangchris Lake closes from mid-January to the end of March, and water access and showers at Hickory Point are closed from November through March each year. Private parks along I-55 stay open longer, but many reduce services in the colder months.
How to book near Divernon
Sangchris Lake State Park is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Reservations for Illinois state park campgrounds are handled through ExploreMoreIL, the state's online reservation platform, which took over from the previous Reserve America system. Hickory Point Campground has historically operated as first come, first served with some reservable sites and cabins, while Deer Run Campground accepts reservations, so travelers should verify current policy before arrival. IDNR requires reservations to be made at least three to seven days in advance depending on the site.
Private parks near Divernon take reservations directly. Springfield KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app. Double J Campground and RV Park, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, and Country Bend Campground handle bookings by phone or through their own websites. For State Fair week in August and holiday weekends, reserve well ahead.
What to expect near Divernon
State park sites at Hickory Point are electric-only, with a shared shower house, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station in the campground. Sites are spacious and many along the eastern shore back up to the water, and cell coverage on major carriers is generally usable. Water access and showers at Hickory Point close from November through March, so cold-weather stays require full onboard tanks.
Private parks along I-55 offer the amenities most RV travelers expect, including full hookups, pull-through sites, Wi-Fi, and dump stations at the KOA and other operators. Expect flat terrain, mosquitoes near water in summer, and occasional severe weather warnings across central Illinois. A NOAA weather radio is worth packing.
