Camping near Dixon, Illinois
Dixon sits along the Rock River in Lee County, in the rolling farmland and wooded ravines of northern Illinois. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Rock River Valley, with campgrounds ranging from private family resorts to a state-managed equestrian site. Interstate 88 and US Route 52 make access straightforward from Chicago, the Quad Cities, and Rockford.
Within roughly a half-hour drive, options include Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian, Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground, Lake LaDonna Family Campground, Pine View Campground, and Green River Oaks Resort. The mix covers full-hookup RV sites, primitive tent areas, cabins, and horse-friendly camps, so travelers can match amenities to trip length and rig size.
Dixon itself supplies groceries, fuel, laundromats, RV service, and hospitals, which makes it a reliable resupply stop for longer regional loops through northwestern Illinois.
Things to do around Dixon
The Rock River is the main draw, with kayak and canoe launches, riverside parks, and fishing for smallmouth bass, catfish, and walleye. Lowell Park, just north of town, has wooded hiking trails and river frontage. Franklin Creek State Natural Area preserves a spring-fed creek with hardwood forests, a restored 1847 grist mill open weekend afternoons from April through October, and 12 miles of equestrian trails that connect directly to the Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian campground.
Family-oriented stops include the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home, Dixon Historic Center, and the John Deere Historic Site in nearby Grand Detour. Green River Oaks Resort and Lake LaDonna Family Campground add on-site swimming, fishing lakes, and organized weekend activities, which keeps kids busy without long drives.

The main RV season runs from late April through mid-October. Private parks such as Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground, Lake LaDonna Family Campground, Pine View Campground, and Green River Oaks Resort typically open in spring once frost risk drops and close after fall color fades. Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian operates on the Illinois Department of Natural Resources calendar, with trails and day-use areas closing during firearm deer hunts in late November, December, and early January.
Summer is peak, with warm humid days, thunderstorms, and the highest weekend demand around Independence Day and Labor Day. The Dixon Petunia Festival, held over the Fourth of July weekend, draws heavy local traffic and fills nearby sites early.
Spring brings wildflowers along Franklin Creek and higher river levels for paddling, but also the wettest months and muddy back-in sites. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and strong hardwood color along the Rock River, making late September and early October a comfortable window for shoulder-season trips.
How to book campgrounds near Dixon
Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and operates on a first-come, first-served basis for equestrian campers, with no online reservations. Other IDNR sites in the region take reservations through the ExploreMoreIL system, so travelers touring multiple state parks should set up an account in advance.
Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground, Lake LaDonna Family Campground, Pine View Campground, and Green River Oaks Resort are privately operated and book directly through each campground's own website or phone line. Summer weekends, holiday weeks, and dates overlapping the Petunia Festival should be reserved several months ahead. For big rigs, confirm site length, hookup amperage, and low-branch clearance before booking, since older wooded loops in the region were laid out for smaller trailers.
What to expect
Terrain around Dixon is gently rolling, with campgrounds set in mixed hardwood forest, along creeks, or beside small lakes. Cell coverage is generally solid on major carriers near town and along I-88, but drops in wooded ravines and river bottoms. Most private parks offer 30 and 50 amp service, water, and dump stations; check ahead for full sewer hookups at individual sites. The Franklin Creek equestrian area is primitive, with vault toilets, scattered water hydrants, and a dump station, but no showers or electric hookups.
Expect mosquitoes and ticks from May through September, especially near water and tall grass. Summer thunderstorms can be intense and occasionally include severe weather warnings, so a NOAA weather radio is useful. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with Illinois rules limiting movement of untreated wood, which helps slow the spread of invasive pests such as emerald ash borer.

Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dixon, Illinois. The Illinois Secretary of State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers under 26,001 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older, upload a clear photo of your license during booking, and complete the quick ID verification step in the app. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. That's it, you're cleared to roll down I-88 toward the Rock River.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/home.htmlWhat protection and roadside help is included with my Dixon RV rental?
Every RV rental in Dixon, IL booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are never left stranded on Route 2 or near Lowden State Park. Roadside assistance handles flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, and towing, day or night. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you pull out of the host's driveway. Combined with the host's walkthrough at pickup, first-time renters in Dixon consistently say they feel covered from the moment they hit the road.

After that, your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, with additional protections for circumstances like natural disasters or major travel disruptions. You will see the full policy and your refund eligibility in your booking confirmation and on your RVezy dashboard. Pro tip: if a Rock River flood warning or winter storm pops up, contact RVezy support right away, they are available 24/7 to help you reschedule or rebook with a different host.

Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Dixon options are easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs and other pets. Many Dixon-area parks are equally welcoming. Lowell Park has shaded riverside trails perfect for leashed walks, and nearby state parks like Castle Rock and White Pines allow pets on most trails and at campsites. Bring proof of vaccinations, a tie-out, and extra towels for muddy paws after a Rock River swim. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about their favorite local off-leash spots.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.castlerock.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Dixon?
Yes, RV delivery Dixon is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many hosts will drop the motorhome or travel trailer right at your chosen campground, like Lake Louise RV Resort or Green River Oaks, level it, hook up water, sewer and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through everything before they leave. You just show up with your groceries. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and how far they will travel; most cover the Dixon, Sterling, Rock Falls and Oregon area within about 30 miles. Pro tip: ask for setup-included delivery, you will save an hour of fiddling with hoses and stabilizers on arrival day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dixon,%20IllinoisHow far can I drive? What about mileage limits on a Dixon RV trip?
You have plenty of road to roam. Most Dixon hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on or for longer bookings. That is more than enough for a classic Dixon, IL RV trip: Starved Rock State Park is about 60 miles southeast, Galena is 75 miles northwest, the Quad Cities sit 80 miles west, Chicago is 100 miles east, and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is roughly 90 miles northeast. Pro tip: if you are planning a bigger loop, message the host before booking and ask about a flat-rate mileage package, it is often cheaper than paying per-mile overages later.

You are spoiled for choice for RV camping Dixon and the surrounding Rock River valley. Lake Louise RV Resort sits just south of town with full hookups, a swimming lake, and shaded sites. Green River Oaks Camping Resort in Amboy (about 15 miles south) is a family favorite with a pool and planned weekend activities. For state-park lovers, White Pines Forest State Park (about 20 miles northeast) and Castle Rock State Park (about 15 miles north near Oregon) both have scenic, wooded sites. Pro tip: Lowden State Park, home to the 48-foot Black Hawk statue, has electric sites overlooking the river, book early through the Illinois DNR reservation system for summer weekends.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.whitepines.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Dixon?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV road trip from Dixon, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and crisp, comfortable evenings along the Rock River. June through August is peak season, perfect for swimming at Lowell Park beach and catching the Petunia Festival around Independence Day. September and early October bring spectacular fall color through White Pines and Castle Rock State Parks, plus thinner crowds and lower nightly rates. Winters in northern Illinois are genuinely cold (often below freezing with snow), so most hosts shut down RVs from mid-November through March. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip in late September to combine warm days, cool sleeping weather, and fewer mosquitoes.
weather.gov/lot/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Dixon?
You are in a great place to be a first-timer. Dixon's flat, grid-style streets, light traffic compared to Chicago, and easy on/off access to I-88 and US-52 make it one of the most relaxed places in Illinois to learn the ropes. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering generator, slide-outs, awning, tanks, and propane, and they are a text away during your trip. If parallel parking a 25-foot Class C still sounds intimidating, choose a host who offers delivery and skip the driving entirely. Pro tip: do a practice loop in a large empty parking lot before heading to your campground, ten minutes there builds huge confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance for things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, whether you are parked downtown by the Reagan statue or 50 miles out toward Starved Rock. Step one is always to call RVezy's 24/7 support line; they will dispatch help and loop in your host. For mechanical quirks inside the RV (a stubborn furnace, a finicky fridge), text your host first, they often know their own rig best and can talk you through it in minutes. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, plate, and propane tank before you leave the driveway, it speeds up any roadside call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Dixon?
An RV road trip from Dixon opens up a huge slice of the Midwest. Head 75 miles northwest on US-20 to historic Galena for rolling hills, wineries, and Mississippi River views. Drive 60 miles southeast on I-80 to Starved Rock State Park for jaw-dropping canyons and waterfalls. Roll 80 miles west to the Quad Cities for riverboat culture and the John Deere Pavilion. Or chase 100 miles east on I-88 to Chicago's lakefront (park the RV at a suburban campground and train in). Cross-border trips into Wisconsin (Lake Geneva, Wisconsin Dells) are typically allowed, just confirm with your host first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: the Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway runs right through Dixon, follow it east for a beautiful low-stress backroad day.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2310How much should I budget for fuel on a Dixon RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Dixon average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg). Illinois gas prices tend to run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so budget conservatively. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $120 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up just outside city limits on Route 2 or in nearby Amboy where prices are often lower than in downtown Dixon, and use GasBuddy to spot deals along I-88 before you commit.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dixon?
For Illinois state parks like Lowden, Castle Rock, and White Pines Forest, book through the Illinois DNR reservation system as soon as your dates are firm, ideally 4 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays. Private parks like Lake Louise RV Resort and Green River Oaks fill up fast for Memorial Day, July 4th (which overlaps with Dixon's Petunia Festival), and Labor Day, so aim for 2 to 3 months out. Mid-week summer stays and shoulder-season trips often have availability just a week or two out. Pro tip: Illinois state park reservations carry a non-refundable reservation fee and have minimum advance booking and maximum stay limits, so review the rules before finalizing your itinerary.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are local driving conditions like around Dixon?
Driving an RV around Dixon is refreshingly mellow. The town sits at the intersection of I-88 (a smooth, wide tollway east-west) and US-52, with flat farmland in every direction, so there are no mountain grades, narrow canyons or hairpin turns to worry about. Watch for the historic downtown bridges over the Rock River, which have standard clearances but tighter lanes, taking the bypass on Peoria Avenue is easier in a big rig. In winter (November to March), expect snow, ice, and the occasional whiteout on rural roads. Summer thunderstorms can bring strong crosswinds on I-88, so check the forecast and reduce speed when gusts pick up. Pro tip: avoid school-zone streets near Reagan Middle School at 3 p.m. on weekdays.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Dixon?
Local campgrounds around Dixon are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Most private parks like Lake Louise RV Resort and Green River Oaks offer full hookups (30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer), hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a camp store. Illinois state park campgrounds like Lowden and White Pines provide electric sites, modern restrooms with showers, potable water fill stations, and a centralized dump station; sewer hookups at individual sites are rare on state land. Looking for where to park an RV in Dixon overnight without a campground? The Dixon Walmart on IL-26 has historically been RV-friendly, just call to confirm and stay one night only. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any state park, the next reliable fill is often 20+ miles down the road.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.whitepines.htmlWhat's actually inside a typical Dixon RV rental?
More than you'd think. A typical motorhome rental Dixon or travel trailer on RVezy comes ready to camp: a real queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a full bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette and sofa that convert to extra beds, climate control (roof AC and furnace), and seatbelted seats for safe travel. Most rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and either a built-in generator or shore-power capability. Campervan rental Dixon options (Class B vans) trade square footage for easier driving and better fuel economy, still with bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list carefully and message the host if Wi-Fi hotspot, solar, or a backup camera matters to your family RV trip Dixon plans.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Dixon?
Hosts in Dixon, IL often offer handy add-ons that make life easier: linen and towel packages, stocked kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and even pre-stocked firewood for Rock River sunset bonfires. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or around Dixon, Sterling, or Rock Falls, with a 30-to-60-minute walkthrough included. Many hosts offer delivery to nearby campgrounds within roughly 30 miles for a flat fee. Mileage allowances commonly run 100 to 150 free miles per day with overage charged per mile, and some hosts offer unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: bundle linens, kitchen kit, and delivery into one ask when messaging the host, you will often get a better combined price than adding them à la carte.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dixon,%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected and your booking documented. At booking, you are charged the rental total, taxes and fees, plus your chosen protection package. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is held (pre-authorized) on your card before pickup; it is not charged unless there is damage or a clear policy violation, and the hold is released after a smooth drop-off. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with the host at pickup and drop-off documenting any existing scratches or dings, it is the best way to make sure your full deposit is released fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Dixon for a winter trip?
Yes, but choose your rig and route carefully. Northern Illinois winters around Dixon regularly drop into the teens and single digits Fahrenheit, with snow common from December through March, so look for RVezy listings that specifically advertise four-season use, heated and enclosed tanks, and shore-power hookups. Many hosts winterize their RVs from mid-November to mid-March and pause bookings, but a growing number offer winter-ready Class C and Class B campervan rental Dixon options for snowshoeing at Castle Rock or driving south to warmer states. Pro tip: if you are heading out of state for the winter, message the host first to confirm cold-weather travel is okay and ask them to walk you through the antifreeze, tank heaters, and skirting before you leave the driveway.
