Campgrounds and RV parks near Dongola, IL

Hiking is the headline activity. Giant City State Park has short loops through sandstone formations along trails like Giant City, Devil's Standtable, Post Oak, and the longer Red Cedar backpacking route. Ferne Clyffe holds a network of trails, including the short Big Rocky Hollow path to a 100-foot waterfall and Hawks' Cave with its 150-foot shelter bluff, plus dramatic rock formations and a canyon stream. Ferne Clyffe Lake holds largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and redear, with bank-only fishing and an Illinois fishing license required. Giant City permits rock climbing and rappelling at Devil's Standtable and Shelter #1 bluff, and Giant City Stables offers guided horseback rides. The Tunnel Hill State Trail, a crushed-limestone rail-trail, gives families a flat option for biking. Garden of the Gods and Little Grand Canyon are within about an hour for day trips.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this corner of Illinois. Spring brings blooming dogwoods, redbuds, and wildflowers across the Shawnee, with comfortable hiking temperatures and active waterfalls after rain. Fall delivers heavy color through the oak and hickory canopy and is the busiest season at Giant City and Ferne Clyffe, with weekends filling quickly. Summers are warm and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and July and August highs averaging near 89 degrees. Shaded campsites and lake access at Ferne Clyffe Lake help with the heat. Winters are mild by Midwest standards but cold enough that the Giant City shower building closes the day after the first shotgun deer season and reopens April 1, with water service off at most state sites. Giant City's main campground stays open year-round but accepts reservations only from April 1 through November 30; from December 1 through March 31 it operates first-come, first-served with self-registration. The Class C vehicle-access camping at Trail Of Tears State Forest is limited when forest gravel roads close in winter and early spring. Hunting seasons affect access at several sites, so check current dates before booking.

Expect rustic conditions at most public sites. Trail Of Tears State Forest offers Class C tent sites with vehicle access and Class D backpack sites; there are no electrical or water connections at the campsites, only privies, a grill, and a picnic table, and large rigs are discouraged due to narrow gravel roads. Giant City's main campground has 85 Class A sites with water, electricity, showers, and sanitary facilities, plus 14 walk-in Class C sites at the south end. Deer Ridge - Ferne Clyffe State Park is a well-shaded Class A loop with gravel pads, electric hookups, drinking water, showers, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station. Equestrian campgrounds at Giant City and Ferne Clyffe are intended for campers bringing their own horses. Cell service is patchy across the Shawnee Hills. Bring cash or checks for self-registration, buy firewood locally to avoid moving pests, and watch for poisonous snakes on sunny sandstone ledges.
