Campgrounds and RV parks near Eldorado, IL

Garden of the Gods Recreation Area is the region's headline stop. The Observation Trail is a roughly quarter-mile flagstone loop that passes sandstone formations like Camel Rock, Devil's Smokestack, and Anvil Rock, with interpretive signs explaining the 320-million-year geological history. Longer routes such as the Indian Point Trail and the River to River Trail branch off for deeper hikes. Cave-in-rock State Park sits atop limestone bluffs above the Ohio River and centers on a 55-foot-wide cavern carved by water. The park also has moderate hiking trails, an on-site lodge and restaurant, boat ramps, and pond fishing. Dixon Springs State Park adds a swimming pool with a water slide, mineral springs, and short waterfall hikes for families. Cedar Lake Campground offers fishing and paddling on the western side of the forest.

Spring brings the region's heaviest rainfall and the most vivid landscape. April is typically the wettest month, and low-water crossings inside Shawnee National Forest may be impassable after storms. Expect wildflowers, active waterfalls, and moderate crowds on weekends. Summer is warm, humid, and the busiest season for RV travel. July and August routinely see highs near 88°F with elevated humidity. Swimming at Dixon Springs and Ohio River boating peak in this window. Ticks, chiggers, and poison ivy are common along wooded trails, so long pants and repellent matter. Venomous snakes, including timber rattlesnakes, are present in the sandstone areas, and cell coverage inside the forest is often limited or absent. Fall is arguably the best window for RV camping here, with cool nights, low insect pressure, and vivid color that typically peaks in late October. Winters are cold and damp with occasional light snow; some state park campgrounds remain open with reduced services, and Pharaoh Campground at Garden of the Gods stays open year-round for dry camping.

Site infrastructure varies widely. State park loops in this part of Illinois tend to offer electric hookups, dump stations, and vault or flush toilets, but water hookups at each site are rare. Cave-in-rock State Park has 34 Class A sites and 25 Class B/S tent sites, with showers, restrooms, and dumping stations in both camping areas. Expect limited or no cellular service inside the Shawnee National Forest, narrow forest roads with tight turns, and low-hanging tree limbs on some access routes. Larger Class A motorhomes should scout routes before committing to secondary roads. Wildlife is active. Deer, raccoons, and turkeys are common, and snakes and ticks appear from spring through early fall. Store food securely and keep pets leashed. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid moving invasive pests between counties.
