Camping near Fairmont City, Illinois
Fairmont City sits in St. Clair County on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, roughly ten minutes east of downtown St. Louis. Its location puts RV travelers within a short drive of Gateway Arch National Park, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, and the wider Metro East region, while I-55, I-64, I-70, and I-255 all converge nearby for easy access.
Campground options fall into two categories. Full-hookup private parks such as Safari RV Park, DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, and Cahokia RV Parque cater to travelers who want paved pull-throughs, 50-amp service, and quick access to the city. For a more rustic stay, Horseshoe Lake State Park offers primitive sites on a 1,200-acre oxbow lake within a 2,960-acre park just north of town.
The St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey rounds out the mix with a family-oriented base camp a short drive from Fairmont City, useful for travelers who want KOA amenities within striking distance of the arch.
Things to do near Fairmont City
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage site a short drive from Fairmont City, preserves the earthworks of the Mississippian culture and includes an interpretive center. Gateway Arch National Park sits roughly six miles west across the river, with tram rides to the top, a riverfront, and the Old Courthouse.
Horseshoe Lake State Park adds fishing, boating, cycling, and birding on 2,960 acres. Boat motors are limited to 50 horsepower, and the park is a well-known stop for waterfowl viewing. The MCT bike trail network connects nearby Metro East communities for easy family rides.
Sports and entertainment are close at hand. Busch Stadium, Ballpark Village, and the gaming floor at DraftKings at Casino Queen are all within a short drive or shuttle ride from most Metro East campgrounds.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Metro East. Days are mild, humidity is manageable, and shoulder-season demand at private parks is lower than midsummer. Spring is the wettest stretch of the year in the St. Louis area, with thunderstorms most frequent from April through June, so travelers should build weather buffers into itineraries.
Summer brings hot, muggy conditions with highs regularly in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit and occasional heat waves reaching triple digits. This is peak season for Cardinals baseball, arch visits, and lake activity, and bookings at DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park and Safari RV Park fill quickly around home stands and holiday weekends.
Winter is cold, damp, and sometimes snowy. Horseshoe Lake State Park's campground runs from May 1 through September 30 only, so cold-weather visitors are limited to year-round private parks such as Safari RV Park, DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, and Cahokia RV Parque.
How to book campgrounds near Fairmont City
Private RV parks in the area take direct reservations. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park uses an online booking system for its pull-through, full-hookup sites and requires cancellations at least three days before arrival. Safari RV Park in Fairmont City books directly through the park and lists 35 full-hookup sites for rigs up to about 45 feet. Cahokia RV Parque and the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey both take direct or KOA-platform reservations.
Horseshoe Lake State Park operates differently. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources does not accept individual campsite reservations there; sites are first-come, first-served with a self-service permit, and group camping is handled through the ExploreMoreIL system. Stays are capped at seven days in any 30-day period. Illinois state parks apply a two-night minimum on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends.
What to expect at campgrounds near Fairmont City
Private parks in and around Fairmont City are urban in feel. Expect paved or gravel pull-through sites, tight spacing, full hookups with 30/50-amp service, Wi-Fi, laundry, and bathhouses rather than heavy tree cover or landscaping. Train noise is common near the river; the DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park sits near active rail lines and freeway approaches.
Horseshoe Lake State Park is the opposite: primitive class C sites with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, drinking water, and a dump station, but no showers and no hookups. Sites sit on flat terrain near the lake.
Metro East neighborhoods vary. Safari RV Park and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park are gated, with security patrols and access keys or codes issued at check-in. Travelers should plan groceries and fuel stops on the Illinois side or in Collinsville, a short, straightforward drive from most sites.
