Campgrounds near Farina, Illinois
Farina is a small village in Fayette County, south-central Illinois, surrounded by farmland and within easy reach of two Illinois Department of Natural Resources state recreation areas. The town sits between Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area to the southeast and Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area to the west, giving RV travelers two lake-based public campgrounds within a short drive.
The closest option is Oak Ridge Campground - Stephen A Forbes State Recreation Area, an IDNR site in Marion County that reopened after a multi-year bridge and infrastructure project. Oak Ridge offers 115 shaded sites with electricity, water, and a shower building, plus a floating walkway that connects the campground to the marina.
Private options round out the choices. Okaw Valley Campground and UcamP Express RV Park serve travelers wanting hookups closer to Farina, while Camp Lakewood Campground near Effingham offers sites off I-70 and I-57. Further west, White Oak - Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area provides a second state-run lake campground with roughly 90 sites at a 1,980-acre park centered on a 46-acre lake.
Things to do near Farina
Water recreation drives most trips. At Stephen A. Forbes, Rocky Point Beach offers sandy swimming, and the lake supports largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie fishing, plus water skiing and boat rental from the marina. A 15-mile horse trail circles the lake, and shorter nature trails include the 2.5-mile Oak Ridge Trail inside the campground and the half-mile Marlow Pond Trail.
Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area centers on a 46-acre reservoir with electric-motor-only boating, fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, and crappie, and hunting managed by IDNR. White Oak Campground sits at the southern end of the lake with access to a hiking trail, a children's playground, and lake recreation.
Off-park, families often drive into Effingham for groceries and restaurants, or into Kinmundy and Vandalia for basic supplies between camp days.

Peak camping season in south-central Illinois runs from late spring through early fall. Summer daytime highs typically sit in the mid-80s Fahrenheit with warm, humid nights, and Rocky Point Beach at Stephen A. Forbes is most useful during this window. Weekends in June, July, and around U.S. federal holidays fill quickly at IDNR sites, so reserving early is important.
Spring brings variable weather, active fishing for bass and crappie, and lower crowds, though rain can be heavy and some park roads may be soft. Fall offers cooler nights, hardwood color across the oak-hickory forest, and quieter campgrounds after Labor Day. The equestrian trail at Stephen A. Forbes is open from May 1 to November 1.
Winter camping is limited. State-run sites reduce services in cold months, and freeze-thaw cycles can affect water hookups. RV travelers heading out from December through February should confirm hookup availability directly with the park office and check the operator's site for any private park they plan to visit.
How to book
Illinois state campgrounds use the ExploreMoreIL reservation system operated by IDNR. At Oak Ridge Campground - Stephen A Forbes State Recreation Area, 52 of the 115 sites can be reserved online, with the remainder held as first-come, first-served. White Oak - Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area uses the same system. Group camps and Rent-A-Camp units at Stephen A. Forbes are booked by contacting the park office directly.
Private parks handle their own reservations. Camp Lakewood Campground, Okaw Valley Campground, and UcamP Express RV Park take bookings through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holiday stretches, aim to reserve state-park sites as soon as the booking window opens, and confirm rig length limits before selecting a site.
What to expect
Sites at Oak Ridge are shaded by mature oaks with electricity, water, and a central shower building; the campground road system, lighting, and access bridge were upgraded during the recent IDNR infrastructure project. Expect a mix of back-in and pull-through sites, and lake access via two stairways and a floating walkway to the marina.
White Oak Campground at Ramsey Lake offers electric sites with a sanitary disposal station and a shower building, plus one cabin unit. Private parks in the area typically provide fuller hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, and Wi-Fi, and can accept larger rigs.
Cell service is generally usable but can be spotty inside wooded state parks. Bring bug spray for evenings near the lakes, and plan grocery stops in Effingham, Kinmundy, or Vandalia before heading into the parks.
