Camping near Farmersville, Illinois
Farmersville sits along Interstate 55 in Montgomery County, roughly halfway between Springfield and the St. Louis metro. The village makes a practical base for RV travelers working Route 66 or breaking a longer Midwest haul, with several private campgrounds within a short drive and a state park campground about 45 minutes east.
Closest to town are small private parks aimed at overnighters and weekly stays, including Kamper Kompanion RV Park, Country Bend Campground, and Double J Campground and RV Park. These properties typically offer full or partial hookups and pull-through access suited to larger rigs coming off I-55. Springfield KOA Journey, located near the capital, adds a family-oriented option with more resort-style amenities.
For a public-land experience, Sangchris Lake State Park covers more than 3,000 acres and centers on a lake built as a power-station cooling reservoir, with about 120 miles of shoreline. Hickory Point is the park's east-side campground and holds the park's shower building near the east boat dock area.
Things to do around Farmersville
Most itineraries pair a night in Farmersville with a day in Springfield. Visitors can tour Lincoln's home, law offices and the Old State Capitol, view the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and visit Lincoln's Tomb. New Salem State Historic Site recreates the 1830s town where the future president lived and worked, with costumed guides on site. Route 66 roadside stops thread through the area for travelers chasing the old alignment.
On the water, Sangchris Lake supports fishing, kayaking, and small-boat use, with boat access from the east and west shores and a Strawkas Point launch off Illinois Route 104. Anglers target largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel and flathead catfish, and the lake is a designated State Fish Preserve. Springfield KOA Journey adds a pool, mini golf, and a pet play area for families with kids in tow.

Book state park sites and the Springfield KOA well in advance for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and fair weekends. Shoulder seasons in April, May, September, and October generally offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations.
Winter changes the picture significantly. At Sangchris Lake State Park, water facilities including the shower building are closed from the Monday prior to Thanksgiving through March 31st. Deer Run Campground closes from the second week of January through March 31st. Private RV parks along I-55 tend to keep at least a few sites open for winter travelers, though pool and playground amenities close for the season.
Spring brings heavy thunderstorms and occasional severe weather, so RV travelers should monitor NOAA alerts and know where campground storm shelters are located.

What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Farmersville is flat farmland with scattered woodlots, so most sites are level and easy to back into. Private parks near the interstate can carry some road noise, while parks tucked off county roads run quieter. Cell coverage is generally strong across the area.
At Sangchris Lake, a sanitary dump station is provided in each campground, and the shower building is located at Hickory Point. Deer Run has no shower facility, so campers there drive or walk over to Hickory Point to use the showers. Pets are permitted on leash throughout the park, and accessible campsites are available in both campgrounds.
Grocery runs and fuel are easy from Farmersville via I-55, and Springfield offers full-service RV supply and repair options within a short drive.
